AP PHOTOS: Coachella continues with Weezer, T-Pain and a Bernie Sanders appearance

Independent13-04-2025

Coachella's second day featured high-profile guests from Hollywood and Washington, D.C., an emotional performance from Weezer and a peaceful transfer of power between electropop stars. Then there was Flava Flav joining the Yo Gabba Gabba characters on-stage to rap 'I love bugs!"
The cultural breadth of the influential Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was on full display Saturday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida traveled from a Los Angeles rally to the desert to introduce Clairo, praising the 26-year-old singer-songwriter's political activism.
Less than an hour earlier, Charli XCX commandeered a minimalist stage where she was joined by Troye Sivan and Billie Eilish, with an audience that included Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet in the front row wearing a big smile and a backpack.
As for that power transfer: After last year's 'brat summer," the English pop star concluded her 'Girl, so confusing' performance with New Zealand electropop star Lorde by declaring 'Lorde summer 2025.'
Sanders' appearance wasn't the day's only dose of politics. Billie Joe Armstrong adjusted the lyrics of Green Day's set-opening 'American Idiot' to declare he's 'not a part of the MAGA agenda" and changed lyrics in 'Jesus of Suburbia' to 'running away from pain like the kids from Palestine.'
T-Pain brought mash-ups and covers to the main stage, singing Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'' and Chris Stapleton's 'Tennesee Whiskey."
Earlier, Weezer delivered a dozen songs in a well-received performance featuring 'Undone (The Sweater Song)," 'Buddy Holly' and a cover of Metallica's 'Enter Sandman.'
The band played four days after bassist Scott Shriner's wife Jillian Lauren was shot and injured by Los Angeles police. Lauren, an author of two memoirs, was arrested and later posted bail after police said she pointed a gun at them.
Band members didn't specifically address the incident, but frontman Rivers Cuomo told the crowd, 'It feels so good to get out here with you guys and let out these emotions.'
Coachella kicked off Friday with Lady Gaga headlining with a crowd-pleasing, extravagantly theatrical, five-act performance. K-pop star Lisa drew a massive crowd to the Sahara tent and Benson Boone announced his second album and sang 'Bohemian Rhapsody' with Queen's Brian May on guitar.
The festival runs through Sunday, with another round of performances April 18 to 20. Travis Scott headlined Saturday night on the main stage with Post Malone set to perform in the final slot Sunday night.

Jury resumes deliberations in Harvey Weinstein sex crimes retrial

The panel, which was handed the case on Thursday morning, has requested to hear a readback of some testimony from two of Weinstein's accusers, as well as to see medical records from one of those women. The jury of seven women and five men is considering two counts of criminal sex act and one count of rape against the 73-year-old Oscar-winning movie producer, with the criminal sex act charges the higher-degree felonies. Harvey Weinstein has denied all the charges against him (Jefferson Siegel /The New York Times via AP, Pool/PA) Weinstein has pleaded not guilty. Sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein propelled the #MeToo movement in 2017. He was eventually convicted of sex crimes in New York and California, but the New York conviction was overturned last year, leading to the retrial before a new jury and a different judge. Jurors heard more than five weeks of evidence, including lengthy testimony from three accusers.

Diddy accused of raping Austrian TV reporter when she tried to book an interview

Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been accused of raping TV reporter Kathi Steininger as she tried to secure an interview The 55-year-old music artist is facing charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution, to which Combs has denied all allegations against him. His trial began last month in New York, with his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, and Kid Cudi among those who have taken the stand so far. Austrian present Steininger has claimed in an interview that she was raped by the rapper when she was 19 years old. She organised an on-camera interview with Combs in March 2000 following his show at Vienna's Libro Music Hall, she told PULS 24, claiming that during the chat she was separated from her cameraman and handed a drink by Combs. She alleges the drink was drugged, and that her next memory from the event was being in the back of a tour bus being raped by the musician. 'There was 100 percent something in it,' she told the publication. 'I would never have gone to bed with that man.' Steininger claims she could not move or cry for help, and after the alleged attack, she felt too 'ashamed' to tell anyone about her experience. She also said that the attack left her unable to work and with post-traumatic stress disorder. 'You should hold those who did this to you accountable. Others should be ashamed,' she said. She alleges she was going to take the stand as part of his ongoing trial, but that, as her claims are outside of the statute of limitations and they were not in the US, she could not. The publication reports that a spokeswoman for the Vienna public prosecutor's office said whether there will be investigations against Combs in Austria will be dependent on the outcome of his current trial in the US. It comes after Combs was threatened with being removed from the courtroom yesterday after he 'vigorously nodded' at jurors. Multiple outlets reported that he has been threatened with expulsion from the court for seemingly attempting to 'interact' with jurors. Speaking to Comb's attorney, the judge Subramanian said in court: 'Mr Agnifilo, your client was looking at jurors and nodding vigorously. 'This can't continue, or I will give a limiting instruction you won't like, or other measures, including barring your client from the courtroom. Do you understand?' More Trending Defence attorney Marc Agnifilo told the judge that it would not happen again. The judge then added: 'There should be no efforts whatsoever to have an interaction with this jury.' This comes just days after a screaming woman was removed from the trial after an explicit outburst. Metro has contacted representatives for Sean Combs for comment . Got a story? Naked cruise setting sail from seaside beauty spot and bookings are open now

The three-hour-long nude cruise will set sail on Friday, June 13 A three-hour nudist cruise is set to embark from Plymouth next week. The unique voyage is scheduled to depart on Friday, June 13 for a tour around Plymouth Sound and up the River Lynher towards St Germans. The bare-skinned adventure will commence at The Barbican Landing Stage, where guests will embark upon the grand vessel. ‌ With the stunning views of Plymouth Sound as an initial vista, followed by the quintessentially English countryside along the River Lynher, the cruise promises an unforgettable experience. Participants will have the bonus of viewing the moored Royal Navy ships along the River Tamar during their journey. ‌ Adding to the enjoyment will be live electronic music and a fully licensed bar on the ship, where cruisers can buy drinks with cash or card. Keith Bowman, British Naturism's South West region events coordinator and the planner behind the Naked Cruise, spoke to Plymouth Live regarding the inception of the event: "The idea for a boat trip came from the successful 'Naked Cruises' held in the USA so I thought to myself, if they can do it then so can we.", reports Plymouth Live. When asked about the ease of organising such an unusual outing, Keith revealed: "I contacted the first boat hire business I could find in Plymouth and explained my idea. To my surprise, they jumped at the chance to provide a cruise around Plymouth Sound and along the local rivers. It's surprising how people become more interested when I mention the word 'Naked'." As of now, approximate times to board and depart have been shared, with exact times expected to be advised at a date closer to the nude voyage. Boarding for Plymouth's unique Naked Cruise is set to commence around 4:30pm, with the vessel slated to cast off at about 4:45 pm. Following a tranquil three-hour journey along the river, the boat is scheduled to return at 7:45pm. Keith, who has been at the helm of organising the event, remarked: "Organising the event has been a dream and the boat company couldn't have been more helpful. Tickets are selling steadily and as normal with Naturist events, we expect there to be a last minute rush for tickets. Why not come and join us." Tickets for this extraordinary Naked Cruise experience in Plymouth are available to British Naturism members for £25 each, while non-members can secure their spot for £30. To entice those contemplating the experience, Keith offers an enticing scenario: "Can you imagine it? It's a bright, sunny, warm evening. You have a glass of wine or cuppa in your hand. Snacks are available if you feel peckish. You're sitting back just watching the world go by as you cruise the waters NAKED! Does that sound good, or what?".
