Auburn vs Alabama State prediction: Who has edge in 2025 NCAA Tournament first round? Will Auburn prevail against the red-hot Hornets on Thursday?
After two days of waiting, Auburn basketball finally learned who it would face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Auburn, the top overall seed of the NCAA Tournament, draws Alabama State from nearby Montgomery after the Hornets stunned St. Francis on Tuesday during the NCAA First Four. Despite being outplayed offensively, Alabama State outscored the Red Flash, 36-29 in the second half to secure the 70-68 win. Sophomore Guard Amarr Knox sealed the win with a layup with 0:01 remaining in the second half. He finished the game with a team-leading 16 points and two steals.
How does Auburn stack up with Alabama State? Here is a full breakdown of the matchup ahead of Thursday's tipoff.
How the Alabama State Hornets got here
The Hornets upset Jackson State in the SWAC Championship Game to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In Tuesday's First Four game with St. Francis, the Hornets shot 43% from the field, 31% from three-point land, and an abysmal 25% from the free-throw stripe. Alabama State trailed for more than 30 minutes of game time and was behind by as many as nine points. However, they connected on four of their final five field goals including the last-second layup to earn the win.
How the Auburn Tigers got here
Auburn wrapped up the SEC regular season championship on March 1 with a win over Kentucky in the very building they will play their NCAA first round game, Rupp Arena. The Tigers won 15 of their first 16 SEC games before dropping three of its final four games, including its most recent loss to Tennessee in the SEC Tournament semifinals. Auburn grabbed the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament by boasting a 16-5 record against Quad-1 competition, two wins more than Houston, the No. 2 team in the category.
Players to watch
Auburn's player to watch is forward Johni Broome. Broome has first-team honors from several outlets and is in the running to win a few more after ending the regular season averaging 18.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Broome has reached double-figures in 27 games this season, which includes 17 games with 20 or more points. He has scored at least 20 points in his last three games.
For Alabama State, CJ Hines is the most dangerous. Hines is second in points with 14.3 per game, 0.1 less than the team's leader, Amarr Knox. However, Hines shoots 42.5% from the field with a 38.9% three-point percentage. He is a consistent player on both sides of the ball, which could keep Alabama State within striking distance in Thursday's game.
Auburn prediction vs Alabama State: March Madness first round
Auburn holds a glaring advantage in every category over Alabama State. However, the Hornets have won seven games in a row and find ways to win despite facing adversity throughout the game. Auburn should win this game but do not be surprised if the Hornets play the Tigers close.
Prediction: Auburn 93 Alabama State 73

Former Auburn linebacker Wesley Steiner signs contract with Seahawks

Another former Auburn Tiger has joined the Seattle Seahawks. Linebacker turned fullback Wesley Steiner, who spent three seasons on the Plains, signed a contract with Seattle earlier this week. The former Tiger finished his college career at Washington State following four years of sporadic playing time as a Tiger. A full-time linebacker in college, the 6-foot, 235-pound Steiner will switch from the defensive backfield to the offensive backfield as a professional. A native of Warner Robins, GA, Steiner was collegiate teammates with current Seahawks Derick Hall and Nehemiah Pritchett. Former Tiger teammate D.J James was also signed by Seattle after the 2024 NFL Draft being being waived and landing on New England's Practice Squad. While his chances at making the team as a defensive player may have been dull, Steiner does have a decent path to a roster spot as a fullback if the former Tiger can show his value on special teams. Other than himself, Seattle's only other true fullback on the roster is fellow first-year player Robbie Ouzts. With current backup fullback Brady Russell's football experience coming exclusively from the offensive side, Steiner's defensive background may give him a leg up, at least in the versatility category, in the competition for a spot on the 53-man roster. In four years at Auburn and a season at Washington State, Steiner accumulated 96 total tackles and a forced fumble. His best season came in 2022, when he contributed 46 total tackles for Auburn, including 10 and 11 against Ole Miss and LSU, respectively. Auburn basketball 2026 targets Caleb Holt and Anthony Thompson in ESPN top 25 ranking

There is a time for Auburn basketball that it was a dream to have a top 25 prospect want to come to their school. Now it is the expectation. A decade into his tenure as Auburn head coach, it is still astonishing at what Bruce Pearl has turned the basketball program into. Two players the Tigers are interested in adding to the program in 2026 are five-star Caleb Holt and Anthony Thompson. Recently, Paul Biancardi of ESPN ranked the top 25 high school basketball players. His ranking is not just limited to the 2026 recruiting class but all of high school basketball. Holt is the highest-ranking Auburn target on the list. The small forward is ranked No. 6. According to Biancardi, Holt uses speed and quickness on both sides of the court. He is a more skilled defensive player but is improving on offense. Holt is rated as the top player in Florida and the No. 6 player nationally according to 247Sports. Thompson, another small forward, comes in at No. 17 in the ranking. ESPN projects him at No. 13 in their 2026 ESPN 100 ranking. Thompson is ranked at No. 10 by 247Sports and the No. 1 player in Ohio. His height is 6-8 but his wingspan is much longer. With his shooting ability from the three-point line he could draw comparisons to Jabari Smith. Auburn earns bowl nod in ESPN's preseason projections

After missing out on bowl season last year, the Auburn Tigers are poised to make another run at postseason play. What is a realistic expectation for the Tigers postseason fate? ESPN experts Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach expect Auburn to meet up with an ACC team at season's end, but in two different destinations. Bonagura and Schlabach project the Tigers to face Boston College in postseason play, however, Bonagura has the Tigers and Eagles facing off in the Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, Dec. 19 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, while Schlabach forecasts Auburn facing Boston College closer to home in the Birmingham Bowl on Monday, Dec. 29. If this forecasted matchup were to take place, it would be a game against teams that are projected to barely cross the threshold into bowl eligibility. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, Auburn is projected to win 6.9 games while Boston College sits at 5.9. However, the two teams are on opposite paths in terms of postseason forecasts. Auburn has an 83.6% chance to win six games while Boston College has a 58.7% chance. For playoff consideration, Auburn has a 12% chance while Boston College has a less than 1% chance. Auburn football has lost seven games in each of the last four seasons, but the program is even more starved for a bowl win. The last bowl win the Tigers earned was in the 2018 season when Auburn boat raced Purdue in the Music City Bowl, 63-14. Since then, Auburn has lost four-straight postseason games, including its most recent game against Maryland in the 2023 Music City Bowl. The SEC is projected to be well represented in postseason play. ESPN's FPI gives 13 of 16 SEC teams at least 60% odds to reach the six wins needed to earn bowl eligibility, nine teams have 30% or greater odds to make the College Football Playoff, and three teams have at least an 11% chance to win the College Football National Championship.
