13 detained over illegal gold mining in Kelantan, Pahang forests since 2023

KOTA BARU: A total of 13 people have been detained over six cases of illegal gold mining reported in Kelantan and Pahang from 2023 to date.
Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department director-general Datuk Zahari Ibrahim said four of the cases were recorded in Kelantan and two in Pahang.
He said 12 people were arrested in Kelantan, while one was detained in Pahang.
The cases in Kelantan were detected in the Batu Papan Forest Reserve, Berangkat Forest Reserve, Ulu Temiang Forest Reserve, and Hulu Galas Forest Reserve.
"In Pahang, the offences occurred in the Kechau Forest Reserve and Sungai Yu Forest Reserve," he told the New Straits Times.
Zahari said the illegal mining activities detected within the Permanent Forest Reserves remain under control, thanks to active enforcement and monitoring.
He added that the overall situation in the East Coast states is not alarming but remains under close watch by the relevant authorities.
"In Kelantan, two types of residents are typically involved.
"First, those engaged in gold panning, and second, those acting as guides or middlemen for illegal miners, including foreigners," he said.
He added that these illegal operations often exploit legitimate exploration licences issued for mineral tenements to disguise their activities.
Zahari said certain forest areas had become hotspots due to their proximity to approved exploration sites, making it difficult for enforcement agencies to distinguish between legal and illegal operations.
"Illegal miners tend to operate discreetly, taking advantage of licensed exploration areas to avoid detection.
"These activities are usually carried out during off-peak hours to avoid enforcement patrols," he added.
Zahari said the department continues to work closely with other enforcement agencies to protect the integrity of the Permanent Forest Reserves and to take firm action against those who violate forestry and mineral laws.
Yesterday, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan had said that gold mining activities in the state's forest reserves mostly involve traditional, small-scale panning carried out by locals.

Mother says she panicked when asked to consent to post-mortem on Zara

Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, Noraidah Lamat, has reportedly said that she was in shock and panic when asked to consent to a post-mortem immediately after her daughter's death. According to a report on New Straits Times , the 45-year-old said there had been no clear explanation of the procedure at the time. 'There was no clear explanation, and we are not familiar with this kind of case. We panicked, and no advice was given about the post-mortem process,' she reportedly wrote in a Facebook comment. 'If we had known, we would not have signed the form refusing the post-mortem,' she reportedly added. Her lawyer, Hamid Ismail, reportedly confirmed that the Facebook account under the handle 'Noie AiDa' belongs to her. Yesterday, Bukit Aman said police had failed to comply with procedure by not initiating a post-mortem, though Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar noted that Noraidah had signed a hospital-issued waiver. Zara died on July 17 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here. She was found unconscious on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school hostel in Papar, Sabah. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #JusticeForZara rally to go ahead amid fresh probe into schoolgirl's death

KOTA KINABALU: The Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara rally will proceed as planned on Saturday, despite the ongoing reinvestigation into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Event coordinator Mhd Asisal said the gathering, expected to draw at least 10,000 participants, would take place at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall compound from 2pm. He added that the rally would present six demands, the first being a transparent and open inquest with daily updates accessible to the media. "All inquest documents and evidence must be made available to the family and their legal representatives. Secondly, there should be an independent monitoring panel made up of non-governmental organisations, lawyers, parents and former judges to oversee the investigation process and ensure transparency," he told the New Straits Times. Asisal said that action must be taken against those who failed to perform their duties or demonstrated incompetence, with disciplinary measures for negligence announced within 30 days. Other demands include requiring the Education Ministry to disclose the latest standard operating procedures (SOP) for reforming anti-bullying protocols, introducing comprehensive anti-bullying measures, and ensuring protection for witnesses and students involved in bullying cases. Meanwhile, Suara Mahasiswa UMS activist Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim said the public's decision to rally was driven by a lack of trust in the system, an issue that prompted the involvement of Bukit Aman police, the exhumation of Zara's body, and calls for an inquest to reinvestigate the case. "The people's anger stems from integrity and professionalism issues, particularly the non-compliance with SOP by the Sabah police. The police must take responsibility for their negligence, as public confidence in their handling of criminal cases is waning. "Speculation is damaging, but it arises because the authorities failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The delay in the probe has heightened concerns not only among university students but also in rural communities, where many have school-going children and siblings," he said. Fadhil also criticised politicians for only engaging with Zara's family and speaking out after the case had dragged on for some time. Zara, 13, was found unconscious at her dormitory in SMKA Tunku Mustapha, Papar, on July 16, and was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.

Businesses near flag incident store close early ahead of planned gathering

KEPALA BATAS: Around 10 shops along Jalan Bertam Permata have closed early today as a precautionary measure ahead of a planned gathering linked to a recent national flag incident. The decision follows the circulation of a viral video showing the Jalur Gemilang flown upside down outside a hardware store in the area, which sparked widespread public outrage. An electrical goods shopkeeper, who identified herself only as Yen, said local businesses had agreed to shut by midday due to concerns that a protest might take place later in the day. "Police came to see us yesterday evening and advised that it would be safest to close for the day. They asked about our usual closing hours and suggested we not open at all today. "However, we couldn't notify all our customers in time, as some had arranged to collect items. So, we decided to open for half a day instead," she told reporters. Yen said her shop usually operated until 6pm, while others in the row tend to stay open even later, including a nearby bundle clothing store that often trades late into the night. "But today, we all agreed it was best to close early. Even the clinic nearby is shutting its doors by noon. We don't want any trouble," she added. The hardware store at the centre of the controversy has remained closed since Sunday. Yen said the incident had a visible impact on local trade, with noticeably fewer customers passing through. "It's clear some people are avoiding this row because of what happened," she said. Checks by the New Straits Times at midday found several other businesses, including a car accessories shop, a clinic and an air-conditioning wiring service, pulling down their shutters. Earlier today, police urged organisers to cancel the planned gathering in Kepala Batas over the upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail stressed that the authorities took seriously any matter that could threaten public safety and order. He confirmed that investigations into the incident were ongoing. So far, 38 police reports have been lodged nationwide — 17 in Penang and 21 in other states. Police had previously confirmed that an investigation was launched after a video of a man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on Aug 9. The footage, posted on Facebook, showed the man raising the flag incorrectly while another person recorded the act. The hardware store owner has since apologised, describing it as an unintentional mistake, and has stated his willingness to face any consequences.
