A new series of summer events will be held in Swindon while a main road is closed for gas works.
Wales and West Utilities has started a major £120,000 project to replace the gas pipes under Devizes Road and, following a closure from the Royal Oak roundabout, will shut the entire route in both directions from July 21 until the end of September to carry out the work in phases.

Along with the free pavement licences that will allow businesses to serve customers outdoors while the closure is in place, there will also be three large-scale events across Devizes Road and Wood Street to bring, music, food and footfall back to the area.
Friends of Old Town, the public face of the Old Town Business Association, has organised the Old Town Gasworks Sunday Socials to support businesses affected by the loss of through traffic to the area.
A different themed event will take place on August 3, 17, and 31, on the closed stretch of road and Wood Street.

The first weekend is a Family Festival with funfair rides, children's arts and crafts, chalk art installations and live acoustic music.
The second will be a Beer & Country Music Festival with craft beer bars, outdoor games and a line-up of Americana and folk bands.
The last event will expand Old Town's Street Foods Festival onto Devizes Road for the first time, featuring global cuisine, live music, artisan traders and a carnival atmosphere.
The events have been made possible thanks to sponsorship from the works company Wales & West Utilities.
Old Town Business Association chair Kris Talikowski said: 'When we learned Devizes Road would close for the whole of August, we knew we had to do more than just complain.
'These Sunday Socials are about turning disruption into something worth coming out for.
'They're designed to keep the area alive and thriving, not only for traders, but for the whole town.
'We're grateful to Wales & West for recognising the impact of their works and stepping in with meaningful support.'
Ross Gregory, external affairs manager for Wales & West Utilities, said: 'We understand the pressure roadworks can place on local high streets.
"That's why we're pleased to support this community-led programme of events, a positive and creative way of keeping Old Town vibrant while we deliver vital gas infrastructure upgrades.'

Leaders of the UK and Germany to sign a treaty on defense, trade and migration

LONDON (AP) — U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are set to sign a treaty on Thursday pledging to tighten defense ties and step up law-enforcement cooperation against gangs that smuggle migrants across the English Channel. The center-right German leader is in London on his first official visit to Britain since taking office in May. Starmer visited Berlin in August 2024, announcing plans for the U.K.-Germany 'friendship and cooperation' treaty with Merz's predecessor, Olaf Scholz. A priority for Starmer, who heads the center-left Labour Party, is curbing the gangs behind cross-channel people smuggling. About 37,000 people were detected crossing the English Channel from France in small boats in 2024, and more than 20,000 people made the crossing in the first six months of 2025. Dozens of people have died trying to cross. Berlin agreed last year to make facilitating the smuggling of migrants to the U.K. a criminal offence, a move that will give law enforcements more powers to investigate the supply and storage of small boats to be used for the crossings. Merz is expected to commit to adopting the law change by the end of the year. 'Chancellor Merz's commitment to make necessary changes to German law to disrupt the supply lines of the dangerous vessels which carry illegal migrants across the Channel is hugely welcome,' Starmer said, calling the U.K. and Germany 'the closest of allies.' Germany and the U.K. – Europe's largest and second-largest economies – are also expected to announce a series of investment deals. The treaty builds on a defense pact the U.K. and Germany, two of the biggest European supporters of Ukraine, signed last year pledging closer co-operation against a growing threat from Russia. It includes a promise to come to one another's aid in case of attack. The two leaders also are expected to agree Thursday to joint export campaigns for jointly produced equipment such as Boxer armored vehicles and Typhoon jets, and to develop a deep precision strike missile in the next decade. Starmer has worked to improve relations with Britain's neighbors, strained by the U.K.'s acrimonious departure from the European Union in 2020. He has sought to rebuild ties strained by years of ill-tempered wrangling over Brexit terms. He has ruled out rejoining the 27-nation bloc's single market or customs union, and has been cool to the idea of a youth mobility agreement with the EU, but has sought to reduce trade barriers and to strengthen defense cooperation. 'I make no secret of the fact I very much regret to this day that Britain left the European Union,' Merz told the German parliament last week. 'But if they at least work together with us again in the area of foreign and security policy, then that is a very good sign. Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants that.' ___ Moulson reported from Berlin. Map shows where 26,000 houses could be built in Swindon

Thousands of houses could be built in several areas in and around Swindon, according to the local plan. Swindon Borough Council has come up with a draft new Local Plan after something of a false start in 2022. The plan envisages that nearly 26,000 homes will be built between now and 2044, and most of them will be built in five 'strategic housing allocations' shown on the map in purple. The plan also shows a desire to create, or bring back, a lot more housing to central Swindon. The new plan shows there could be 4,300 flats and houses built in the town centre, with 1,358 allocated to land north of the Railway Station and 1016 for the Brunel Quarter including the area now occupied by the tented market and until recently by the House of Fraser store. Although not shown on the map, East Wroughton is also a strategic allocation with space for 1,027 homes. Outside of the strategic allocations, there are significant numbers of homes planned for the regeneration of Marlowe Avenue at 976 and 814 for Pipers Way. The map also shows areas designated as zones of non-coalescence. The largest is the zone running along the southern border of the NEV, designed to stop Swindon's growth swallowing up Wanborough, and also a smaller area between the expanded South Marston and Rowborough NEV and the planned developments south of the A420. Wichelstowe and Wroughton will be separated by a non-coalescence zone, as well as the M4, and one is allocated between the south of Broad Blunsdon and the northern edges of the Kingsdown allocation. (Image: Swindon Borough Council) The map also shows the existing and planned public open green spaces, with a notable lack of open spaces in North Walcot, Gorse Hill and Stratton St Margaret. Nature reserves like Coate Water, Barbury Castle and Sevenfields in Penhill are shown in a brighter green with a darker border. The council's cabinet has endorsed putting the new draft plan out to public consultation for six weeks from September 1 – a decision that must be confirmed by the full council. Council leader Councillor Jim Robbins said: 'This is an important piece of work setting out the development of Swindon. It's important to get both cross-party support and to put it out for consultation after the summer break.'
