Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must take immediate steps to restore public confidence by ensuring transparency in its Sabah mining scandal probe, says Sabah Bersatu Women Chief Rahimah Majid. Rahimah said the commission should provide a public update on the status of investigations involving all individuals named by the whistleblower and urgently introduce external oversight, either through a Parliamentary Select Committee on Corruption or the creation of an Independent Anti-Corruption Ombudsman.

Her remarks follow MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki's recent statement confirming that at least two individuals are expected to be charged soon in connection with alleged bribery tied to a controversial mining project in Sabah. However, the whistleblower who initially exposed the scandal claims that at least eight other individuals were involved, raising serious concerns about the completeness of the current investigations. 'The people must be assured that justice is being applied fairly. It's troubling if only a few individuals are held accountable when more names have reportedly been submitted to the MACC,' she said. 'These are urgent needs, not wants. There's no need to beg, it's the federal government's duty,' Liow stressed. Loud booms heard over Jerusalem, Tel Aviv as Iran launches missiles
JERUSALEM: Loud booms were heard over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday, AFP journalists reported, after air raid sirens sounded in several parts of Israel and the military warned of incoming Iranian missiles. "A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel," the military said in a statement. It added that the air force was "operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat." Around 20 minutes later, the army released a statement saying people were allowed to leave protected spaces in several areas across the country. It said search and rescue teams were operating in several locations where "reports of fallen projectiles were received." In a statement on Telegram, the Israeli police reported that "missiles and shrapnel fell in the Tel Aviv area, causing material damage but no injuries." The fire and rescue service said there was an initial report of a "missile strike and fire" in the Dan district, an area surrounding Tel Aviv. "Around 08:45 (0545 GMT), numerous calls were received... regarding a missile strike and a fire in the Gush Dan area. Firefighting forces are on their way to the scene," it said in a statement. Despite growing calls for the longtime foes to end hostilities, neither Israel nor Iran showed any signs of cutting short the missile blitz that kicked off Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented series of aerial raids targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.--AFP

Sabah MACC nabs two in RM66,000 bribery case over land applications

Sources said the two male suspects, aged in their 50s and 60s, were detained between 10 and 11 am today while giving statements at the MACC Sabah office. Advertisement The alleged offences occurred around 2016, despite both individuals having no authority to process land matters or access to the relevant lots. Preliminary investigations revealed the duo received RM54,000 and RM12,000 respectively from multiple individuals in exchange for processing applications under the state land scheme. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
