Texas Tech extends Grant McCasland's contract again, through the 2030-31 season

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech men's basketball coach Grant McCasland has agreed on a new contract that goes through the 2030-31 season, the school announced Monday.
The Red Raiders were 28-9 this past season and made the NCAA Elite Eight before losing to eventual national champion Florida. They finished second in the Big 12 standings behind national runner-up Houston, and were the only team to beat the Cougars in conference play. Tech was eighth in the final Associated Press poll.
McCasland is 51-20 at Texas Tech, and has gotten a contract extension after each of his first two seasons. He went 23-11 with an NCAA Tournament appearance in his 2023-24 debut with the Red Raiders. He initially got a six-year deal when he was hired two years ago after going 135-65 in six seasons as head coach at North Texas.
'Coach McCasland immediately built upon our men's basketball program's established success and continues working to raise and deliver on high expectations,' athletic director Kirby Hocutt said.
The school didn't release financial terms of the contract.

James Wood hits a 3-run homer and the Nationals beat the banged-up Mets 9-3 to win series

WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood broke out of a slump with a three-run homer, Riley Adams hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and the last-place Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Thursday to take two of three from their banged-up NL East rivals. Wood's opposite-field shot to left in the ninth was his 26th homer of the season but just his second since the second-year slugger played in his first All-Star Game.

Rays call up shortstop Carson Williams, place Ha-Seong Kim on the IL with recurring back trouble

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays called up top shortstop prospect Carson Williams on Thursday before their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Rays made the move as they placed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on the injured list with recurring back trouble. Manager Kevin Cash, speaking before the move was finalized, said he was eager to see Williams join the team. 'I am excited for sure,' Cash said. 'Carson, I give him a lot of credit. He had a great year last year, continued to put himself on the map, and after some early season struggles, he's really come out of it and done well lately for Durham.' Williams arrived at George M. Steinbrenner Field less than an hour gametime and was not in the lineup. He is expected to see his first action later in the series. The 21-year-old was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Known for his strong glove and developing power, he earned a MiLB Gold Glove in High Single-A in 2022. At Triple-A Durham this season, Williams hit .213 with a .318 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage. He has 23 home runs, 55 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 111 games, and is ranked among MLB Pipeline's top 50 prospects. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. For the Rays, the call-up marks a step toward the future in a season that has gone off track. Forced to play their home schedule at the Yankees' spring training ballpark after hurricane damage to Tropicana Field, the club has been beset by injuries and inconsistent play. They entered Thursday 61-66, in fourth place in the AL East and 12 1/2 games behind division-leading Toronto. Kim's injury created the opening. The shortstop was examined Wednesday and is expected to be shut down for several days. Cash said the club is optimistic Kim's stint on the injured list will be close to the minimum 10 days. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rays transferred outfielder Stuart Fairchild to the 60-day injured list. ___ AP MLB:

Colts planning to keep top 2 QBs on the bench for preseason finale

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen said Thursday he does not intend to play either of his top two quarterbacks, Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson, in Saturday's preseason finale at Cincinnati. Steichen also does not intend to play many starters. The announcement comes two days after Steichen said Jones will be the starting quarterback for Indy's Sept. 7 season opener against the Miami Dolphins. 'I think he's one play away from going into an actual game and don't want to take the risk there in that situation,' Steichen said when asked about Richardson. 'We've got a lot of our threes and fours playing in this game.' NFL coaches generally don't play starters in the final preseason game, which is why Jones will sit out. Richardson also has been susceptible to injuries, starting only 15 of 34 games in his first two NFL seasons after being selected fourth overall in the 2023 draft. He also was benched for two games last season after pulling himself out of a game because he was tired. Steichen also announced four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard will not play Saturday. Indy signed Howard on Monday. Howard did not play in the league last season, but worked with Indy's new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo his first two seasons with the Dolphins.
