During an INDIA bloc meeting held on Thursday, it was decided to "prevent the BJP from hijacking the elections in Bihar" where assembly polls are due later this year, he claimed.

(File photo) The recent US decision to impose steep 50% tariffs on Indian exports, citing India's continued oil trade with Russia, has put stress on the US-India trade relationship. Despite diplomatic pressure, Modi declared he would not compromise on agricultural policies that protect Indian farmers. Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary Conference on August 7, he said: 'The welfare of farmers, livestock rearers and fisher folk is our priority. I'm prepared to pay a personal and political price to safeguard their interests.' These words weren't just for show. They came with action and conviction. In refusing to open up India's dairy, grain, and other sensitive agricultural sectors to American demands, Modi sent a strong message: The Indian farmer's livelihood comes before any foreign pressure or political calculation. This isn't the first time Modi has stood by India's farmers. Since coming to power in 2014, his government has launched a series of transformational schemes aimed at strengthening the rural economy and ensuring dignity for the annadata (food provider). Systemic reforms Over the past decade, the Modi government has rolled out several farmer-centric initiatives. One of the flagship schemes, PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi), offers ₹6,000 a year to small and marginal farmers. In the 2024-25 financial year, over 9.59 crore farmers were registered as eligible with 9.46 crore actually receiving the transfers. The soil health card scheme, launched in 2015, aimed to issue cards to 14 crore farmers, helping them optimise fertiliser use and enhance yield. Agriculture is all about managing risk, and the revamped Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana provides affordable crop insurance against natural calamities. Since its inception in 2016, 78.407 crore farmer applications have been insured under it. Of them, 22.667 crore farmers received claims totalling ₹1.83 lakh crore. The e-NAM (National Agriculture Market) connects mandis through a digital platform, ensuring fair price discovery. 1,400 mandis have been integrated with the e-NAM platform, enabling farmers to access real-time information on crop prices and enhance market linkages. For energy-savvy irrigation, PM-KUSUM promotes solar-powered pumps, letting farmers save on electricity while embracing clean energy. Through Har Khet Ko Pani and Per Drop More Crop, the government is expanding irrigation and promoting micro-irrigation to boost water efficiency. These schemes reflect a harmonised strategy: PM-KISAN delivers the financial lifeline at scale, soil health cards empower smarter farming, and the rest modernise infrastructure and climate resilience. These initiatives represent a shift from past governments that often made promises but failed to deliver. Modi's focus has been on systemic reforms, technology-driven solutions, and direct benefit transfers, minimising middlemen and leakages. Rallying behind PM The response from India's rural heartland has been overwhelmingly supportive of PM Modi's firm stance against US tariffs. Across states, farmer organisations, unions, and agrarian groups have rallied behind the government, recognising Modi's refusal to compromise on agricultural policies as a strong defence of their livelihoods. One of the most vocal supporters has been the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the coalition of farmer unions that led the prolonged protests against the earlier farm laws. The SKM has characterised the US tariff imposition as an economic embargo, emphasising the unfairness of penalising Indian farmers for geopolitical decisions beyond their control. They have publicly applauded Modi's resolve to shield farmers from foreign pressure, viewing it as a rare moment when the government placed farmers; interests above international diplomatic expediency. The All India Kisan Sabha and Bharatiya Kisan Union have also voiced support. The unity among these diverse farmer groups signals a growing trust in the Modi government's commitment post the repeal of the farm laws, reassuring rural voters that their concerns are being addressed. The backing sends a clear message that Modi's stand transcends mere political posturing — it is a principled defence of India's agrarian backbone. The solidarity between the government and farm groups will prove politically decisive in the future. More importantly, it reaffirms the Modi government's resolve to support the farmer not just with words but also through action, ensuring that India's agricultural sector remains protected and empowered amid global challenges. In global diplomacy, standing up to a superpower comes with risks. But leadership is about making tough choices and protecting the vulnerable. Modi's refusal to compromise India's agricultural interests under pressure shows not only courage but also clarity of purpose. This protest is against vote theft: RJD as INDIA Bloc leaders march to ECI
Patna: As INDIA Bloc leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, led a protest march from Parliament House to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Monday, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari called it a fight to stop 'vote theft.' The protest was organised in opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which the Opposition claims is a move to manipulate voter data ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking to IANS, Mrityunjay Tiwari said, 'This protest is being waged both in the House and on the streets. There are deliberate attempts to weaken democracy. We will not allow vote theft with SIR. This is a major battle to safeguard democratic principles.' Reacting to the ECI's demand that LoP Rahul Gandhi either issue a formal declaration or apologise for his statements regarding electoral integrity, Tiwari alleged that the poll body was working under the influence of the central government. 'It is evident that the ECI is acting on a script written by the Centre. Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of the Opposition; he has raised serious concerns, and it is the duty of the ECI to clarify. Instead, they are asking for oaths. What oath is needed? The Election Commission has deviated from its responsibility and accountability,' he told IANS. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police on Monday detained several INDIA Bloc leaders, including LoP Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose, and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, Sanjay Raut, as they attempted to march to the ECI's office. Among the key figures leading the protest were Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav. The leaders accused the ECI of failing to prevent voter list tampering during last year's Lok Sabha elections and claimed the SIR process in Bihar is another attempt to manipulate the democratic process. In a dramatic moment during the protest, Akhilesh Yadav was seen jumping over a police barricade as security personnel tried to halt the march. Several other leaders were detained for attempting to breach the barricades en route to the ECI office. Following his detention, LoP Rahul Gandhi told reporters, 'The ECI cannot even speak, and this is the reality. The truth is visible to the nation. This march is not political; it is a battle to protect the Constitution — a fight for 'one man, one vote.' We demand a clean and transparent voter list.'

Political slugfest erupts over renaming of Kolkata's iconic Sealdah station
Kolkata: A fresh political tussle has broken out between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the proposed renaming of Kolkata's iconic Sealdah Railway Station. While the Trinamool Congress wants the Sealdah station to be renamed after Swami Vivekananda, the West Bengal unit of the BJP wants it to be renamed after Syama Prasad Mukherjee. Both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress have their own logic. According to BJP former state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, Sealdah station was denied the main transit point status for the Hindu refugees during the partition of undivided India. 'The man responsible for ensuring the proper livelihood of these Hindu refugees was Syama Prasad Mukherjee. So, in his memory as well as keeping in mind the significance of Sealdah station for the transit of refugees, the station should be named after him,' Majumdar said. However, Trinamool Congress state general secretary, Kunal Ghosh, has rejected Majumdar's logic. According to him, there is a port in West Bengal that is already named after Syama Prasad Mukherjee. There is no necessity for a station to be named after him. 'Rather, Sealdah has a direct link with Swami Vivekananda. After delivering his iconic speech at a religious conference in Chicago in the USA, he came to Sealdah station. So there is a direct link between him and the station. So the station should be named after him," Ghosh said. However, Majumdar admitted that naming Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mukhopadhyay would not be easy, as the name change of any railway station in any state required the concurrence of the state government concerned. 'The station's name will be changed following the recommendation of the state government concerned. So I will request the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, that her government sends the proposal for renaming the station after Syama Prasad Mukherjee,' Majumdar said.
