Dalin out, Goodchild in as British skipper takes charge of MACIF after health blow to Frenchman

June 24 (Reuters) - French sailing star Charlie Dalin will miss the entire 2025 racing season due to health concerns, with British skipper Sam Goodchild taking over the helm of the IMOCA MACIF Sante Prevoyance yacht, the team said on Tuesday.
Despite the absence of this year's Vendee Globe winner, the team confirmed on Tuesday that they will maintain their full racing schedule, with Goodchild and co-skipper Lois Berrehar set to compete in all planned events in the IMOCA Globe Series.
"It's a difficult decision to make, but health is a priority," said Dalin, who last month said he had set his sights on defending his series title.
"I'm obviously disappointed not to be able to sail this season, but I have complete confidence in Sam and Lois to fly the MACIF Sante Prevoyance flag high."
Dalin will remain involved in the project management behind the scenes while his team competes in three major races: the Course des Caps starting this Sunday, the Defi Azimut in September, and the Transat Cafe L'Or in October.
Goodchild, who won the 2023 IMOCA Globe Series Championship, acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the role. "It's an honour for me to take the helm of the IMOCA MACIF Sante Prevoyance," he said. "Lois and I will devote all our energy to living up to the collective ambition of this project."
Berrehar, 31, brings significant credentials to his co-skipper role. The French sailor won the Transat Paprec in 2023 and finished second in last year's Solitaire du Figaro with two stage victories. He had previously been named as Dalin's replacement skipper for the Vendee Globe.
"When Charlie called me to join this project, I took it as a huge vote of confidence," Berrehar said. "We're going to do everything we can to aim for victory."
For the upcoming Course des Caps, Goodchild and Berrehar will be joined by Charlotte Yven, Guillaume Combescure, and media driver Guillaume Gatefait for the 2,000-mile journey around the British Isles.
MACIF has requested no further inquiries regarding Dalin's health situation, and said no further statements would be made.
The IMOCA racing series is a premier offshore sailing championship featuring high-performance 60-foot monohull yachts known as IMOCAs, designed to be sailed by small crews or even solo. Governed by the International Monohull Open Class Association, the series includes iconic transoceanic races such as the Vendee Globe.
These cutting-edge boats, often equipped with hydrofoils, are built for speed, endurance, and innovation, making the IMOCA series a proving ground for the world's best ocean racers and a showcase for the latest in maritime technology.

Thomas Frank has perfect start to Tottenham reign as Sunderland batter West Ham

Richarlison netted a brace, including a superb scissor kick, and Brennan Johnson scored as Thomas Frank picked up a first league win in charge of Tottenham with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. Frank was without injured pair James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, but Richarlison's double helped Spurs secure a first league win since April 6. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style after they swept West Ham aside with a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the league, the Black Cats went ahead just after the hour mark through Eliezer Mayenda before Dan Ballard's header doubled their advantage. Substitute Wilson Isidor came off the bench to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Rodrigo Muniz struck deep into stoppage time as Fulham snatched a 1-1 draw at Brighton. Albion had looked on course to make a winning start to the season when Matt O'Riley tucked home a 55th-minute penalty after Sander Berge brought down Georginio Rutter. Newcastle missed the presence of wantaway Alexander Isak as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw with 10-man Aston Villa. The Magpies could have done with their star man as they failed to find a way past Villa, who had Ezri Konsa sent off in the 66th minute.

Revealed: 'The one Jadon Sancho demand holding up £20m Man United sale' despite the forward being frozen out by Ruben Amorim

Jadon Sancho 's hefty salary demands are holding up a potential move to Roma despite the club offering him an escape route from Manchester United, reports claim. According to the Italian media, via Football Italia, United have agreed to sell the outcast forward for €23million (£19.8m), but Sancho has not yet accepted personal terms as he would need to take a substantial pay cut. As first reported by Daily Mail Sport, Roma are the latest to discuss a potential loan and option to buy for the 25-year-old - but United only want a permanent sale. Sancho has been ostracised at United and is not part of Ruben Amorim 's plans. However, given Sancho's salary of £250,000-a-week, United would prefer to shift him off the books for good for a fee of between £20m and £25m. The big stumbling block appears to be his wage packet, worth around £13m-a-year. Roma are not able to extend to that figure and have therefore reportedly suggested Sancho sign a five-year deal in order to spread out his salary. It remains to be seen whether the winger accepts the proposal or holds out for an improved offer elsewhere, in the knowledge he has interest from other clubs. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea, with whom he won the Conference League, but the club decided to pay a £5m fee to avoid turning the deal permanent. Reports in recent weeks have also linked Sancho with a third stint at Borussia Dortmund, suggesting he is prepared to cut his wages in half to facilitate a return. However, according to Sky Sports Germany, there are questions within the Dortmund camp surrounding re-signing Sancho - particularly given how both Chelsea and United have not chosen to feature him in their plans. The club are also said to be anxious regarding potential criticism of them going back to the well one too many times in bringing back the ace. Sancho signed for United from Dortmund in 2021 for £73m. He has one year remaining on his deal, although United have the option to extend it by a further year. During his time at Old Trafford, Sancho has made 83 appearances, while he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.

Marseille's explosive meltdown: English star in 'heated argument' with Adrien Rabiot - while Roberto De Zerbi accuses his men of having 'SMALL BALLS' in furious tirade after opening-day defeat

Marseille's dressing room reportedly descended into anarchy after they lost their Ligue 1 opener - with one English player being targeted by multiple team-mates. The mood reportedly turned toxic as several key names voiced their frustrations and manager Roberto De Zerbi delivered a crude speech. Marseille fell 1-0 to Rennes on Friday night after conceding a stoppage-time goal - despite having a one-man advantage - and have already fallen prey to the psychodrama and tumult which often afflicts them. According to RMC Sport, English winger Jonathan Rowe, 22, formerly of Norwich, was the target of multiple team-mates' ire. He was allegedly accused of not putting in enough effort and became involved in a heated argument with France international Adrien Rabiot. It is thought the episode with Rabiot, one of the top stars at the club, could have consequences for Rowe's future, as he is one of the most likely to be on th chopping block this transfer window. Apparently Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Geronimo Rulli, and Leo Balerdi also contributed strong words to what was a very disappointed dressing room. But the most convicting of all came from the mouth of manager Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Brighton, who said: 'The others beat us on the pitch, and we come in here and fight among ourselves. 'You know what that means? That we have small balls. In Marseille, we need to have big ones.' De Zerbi reportedly let the players squabble among themselves before intervening with his damning speech. Marseille had put out a strong side for their season opener in Rennes, with former Premier League players in Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. This is not the first time that Marseille have been involved in heated scenes - they are, after all, one of France's most passionate clubs. De Zerbi has become more consistent with his outbursts and hit out at the quality of refereeing in Ligue 1 last season. 'I'm Italian, and after OM I'm not going to coach in France again,' he said after Derek Cornelius was sent off in February. 'There's a problem in the French championship, if French people are happy with this level of decision making, then good for them. But today it was scandalous. 'The referee was not in [the right state of mind to officiate] this match because of all the controversy surrounding him.' Marseille finished second last season and will be widely expected to compete at the top end again this campaign.
