Fifty-seven Whitehall in London's Westminster has had a long and storied history, having played host to Tudor royalty, the locus of the military brainpower behind Britain's victories in the two World Wars, and even as the stomping ground of Ian Fleming, providing ample inspiration for his Bond novels. This September, however, the storied address entered a new era as Raffles London at The OWO (short for 'Old War Office'). The hotel's opening followed a six-year renovation, overseen by the late French architect Thierry Despont, resulting in 120 guest rooms across seven floors, 2.5 miles of corridors, and a 65-foot subterranean pool alongside a Guerlain Spa. Here, oak doors have brass push plates adorned with the royal cipher of Edward VII, and the 13 decorative fireplaces were salvaged from other London landmarks. The wide hallways—designed to accommodate couriers ferrying confidential MI5 and MI6 correspondence—have too been preserved. And the hotel has also kept its discreet entrance off of Whitehall Court, marked by EVIIR (Edward VII) insignia—perfect for spies, or perhaps, today, a privacy-seeking celebrity. —E.T.

As far as location goes, One Aldwych is hard to beat. Not only is it a few minutes walk to London hotspots like the Covent Garden Piazza, Trafalgar Square, and an endless number of West End theaters, it's also a hop, skip, and a jump from the Thames pathway and the vast array of cultural attractions along the South Bank. Yet once you're happily ensconced in one of its 105 rooms and suites overlooking the likes of Waterloo Bridge and the London Eye, you'll feel a world away from the clamor of the city. Luxuriously-appointed rooms feature crisp Frette sheets and sleek, minimal interiors that further foster the feeling you're in your very own tranquil haven, while the hotel's Indigo restaurant—with its convivial atmosphere and seasonal menu of inventive British classics—is esteemed enough to attract locals alongside One Aldwych guests. Bonus points too for the health club and indoor pool located in the basement, meaning you can get a few laps in before a long day of walking to see all the nearby sights—or retreat to the sauna to decompress on your return. —L.H.

Plane passenger tries to outsmart airline's luggage rule by doing the unthinkable with her suitcase: ‘She's so real for that'

They told her to check the bag — she checked them instead. A fierce flyer is going viral for muscling her suitcase into a carry-on sizer at a European airport — leaving airline staff stunned when the bag actually fit. The shove came courtesy of TikTok user Arina (@summermken_official), who posted a video of herself forcefully wedging her luggage into a metal bag checker at the Vueling counter during a recent flight from Paris to London. 'Never give up, at least not on the sake of €200,' she wrote in the caption — and the internet agreed. The clip has racked up more than 10 million views since it was posted July 22. 'They asked me to place my bag in the checker to confirm it met size requirements,' Arina told Newsweek. 'It seemed that they were just suspicious of the size of my bag since it didn't seem like carry-on luggage.' The Spanish low-cost carrier, like many budget airlines, has earned a reputation for eagle-eyed enforcement of size rules — and for slapping on sky-high baggage fees. Vueling charges up to 88 euros (about $96) at the airport if your bag doesn't fit its requirements. 'I was 100% sure that it would fit […] plus I measured it before buying and it fit the standards of the company,' she told the outlet. What followed was a now-iconic suitcase showdown: Arina is seen in the clip straining to push her bag into the checker — and then yanking it out with just as much effort. The Vueling employee? Gobsmacked. 'She seemed quite surprised that the suitcase actually fit,' Arina said. 'She said, with genuine shock, that I must be very strong… she clearly didn't expect it to fit at all.' TikTokers applauded her persistence — and side-eyed the airline. 'Her face, that's 'I told you' face,' wrote one viewer in the comments section. 'She's so real for that,' another chimed in. 'Bro that's small carry-on too, I hate airlines,' added an additional user. As previously reported by The Post, one Ryanair passenger broke down in tears this week at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria after being denied boarding when her bag wouldn't fit the airline's size limits. Despite shoving it into the sizer, she refused to pay extra, pleaded with border police, and ultimately collapsed to her knees sobbing as staff looked on. Overall, when it comes to budget flights, it's bend or break — and these women did both. Solve the daily Crossword

Get your kids away from screens over summer with free wildlife photography sessions

FREE wildlife photography sessions are taking place for youngsters throughout August. The sessions - organised by Bradford-based Yorkshire Photography Hides - are aimed at getting children away from their screens and out into nature. Yorkshire Photography Hides is run by local wildlife photographers Danny Virr and Mick Batley, whose work has been featured by the Telegraph & Argus and a range of other publications. A picture taken from Yorkshire Photography Hides' Willow Hide (Image: Danny Virr) Danny said: "Do you want to get your children away from their phone screens or their games consoles and out in to the fresh air? "Here at Yorkshire Photography Hides, we're providing the option to do just that by opening up one of our wildlife hides for free to junior photographers during the summer school holidays. "It's the perfect chance to get your children out into nature and enjoying some of the stunning wildlife our British countryside has to offer. Another impressive shot taken at Willow Hide (Image: Danny Virr) "They will have the chance to see some beautiful birds up close, such as Nuthatches, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Goldfinches, and much more. "They may even spot some of the resident cute mammals, like grey squirrels and rabbits." Yorkshire Photography Hides has three hides - called Charlie's Hide, the Den, and Willow Hide. Danny and Ella in Willow Hide (Image: Danny Virr) The free photography sessions will take place in Willow Hide. Yorkshire Photography Hides' website states: "Our hides are all set on private land in the heart of West Yorkshire and offer you the perfect opportunity to get closer to nature than you may have thought possible and capture moments many never see. "With a huge amount of biodiversity we often have the possibility to introduce seasonal hides on a pop-up basis to observe certain species." The website describes Willow Hide - which is situated on the fringe of an ancient oak woodland - as a "songbird paradise". Danny added: "During the school holidays, we know it can be hard work filling the days - and costly. "That's another reason why we're opening up Willow Hide throughout the whole of August to be used by junior photographers at absolutely no cost." Each session can hold up to two junior photographers and one accompanying adult. Accompanying adults are also permitted to bring their own camera should they wish to have a go. Sharon Osbourne's Loved Ones Fear the Death of Husband Ozzy ‘May Be Too Much for Her to Handle'

Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne's death at age 76 — less than three weeks after delivering a stirring farewell concert with his Black Sabbath bandmates — has left friends and family fearing for his reeling widow, Sharon. 'She's numb with disbelief at the suddenness of his death,' an insider says. Sharon's life revolved around caring for Ozzy, and now she's devastated by the loss of her Prince of Darkness, who died at home in England, sources confide. The Osbournes were reportedly blindsided by his passing — despite his 20-plus years of battling Parkinson's disease and crippling pain stemming from a long-ago ATV accident. Insiders say the clan was buoyed by the 'Crazy Train' rocker's gutsy performance at the star-studded Back to the Beginning event in England that raised over $190 million for three charities — Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Acorn Children's Hospice. The insider remarks that Ozzy's death 'seems too soon' for the Osbournes, adding that Sharon was 'not prepared.' The source explains, 'Now she's left alone with her own career faltering — and without Ozzy to give her the strength to carry on.' Sharon, 72, retreated to the U.K. to care for Ozzy full-time when her American TV career stalled after she left The Talk in 2021 following a clash with cohost Sheryl Underwood and Sharon's denials that she made racist remarks. Now, the insider says, the center of the tart-tongued talker's universe has been snatched from her, and she's at an emotional loss. 'She's depressed and doesn't know what the future holds,' the insider shares. Insiders say friends are encouraging Sharon to continue her advocacy for causes like LBGTQ+ and animal rights. 'She needs to keep busy — not sit at home all teary and unsure of herself,' the insider notes. 'It's not healthy, and her health has been compromised enough in recent times.' The glam grandma battled colon cancer in 2002 and had a preventive double mastectomy in 2012 after learning she had a genetic predisposition to develop breast cancer. Sharon has also struggled with her weight. She admitted to using the prescription injection Ozempic to lose unwanted pounds — only to become scary skinny. She also experienced some unpleasant medication side effects, including nausea, vomiting and constipation. She's since stopped taking the slimming drug, which was originally marketed for type 2 diabetics. Adds the insider, 'People around her fear Ozzy's death may be too much for her to handle. They're checking in and keeping an eye on her and hope that's enough.'
