Boks must fix sloppy breakdown play, says de Villiers
Though the Boks breezed past the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia, De Villiers says hard work is needed in training ahead of a showdown against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on August 16.
'If you look at the past three Test matches, there are elements of their game that the Boks need to work on,' he said.
'There were things they tried out to see if they could evolve their game even more.
'I think the one element that will concern them a little bit is the breakdown because it was sloppy at times.
'But that comes with the fact that they were trying to play a more expansive game and you don't have as many numbers playing to the ball.
'There were also handling errors in the Test against Georgia.
'I think that it is a combination of the atmosphere, the opposition and the pressure you are being put under and also the way you want to play.
'At the end of the day, if each guy in the team makes one silly error, then suddenly that is 23 errors in the game.
'It is also 23 times that you give the ball away to the opposition.
'But if you win the game by 45 points and you still have those errors, then it is not a bad performance.
'We know the quality of this team and the high standards they have, and that won't be good enough for them.'
De Villiers said competition for places in the starting line-up was driving the Boks forward in their efforts to become an even better team.
'You want healthy competition within your squad and we certainly have that when it comes to the wing position,' he said.
'We have several world-class wings and probably a couple more who are also knocking on the door as well.
'It is a very fortunate position for SA to be in.
'For someone like Edwill van der Merwe, however, it is an unfortunate position to be in.
'Probably, if we select our best team tomorrow, he does not make the starting 15.
'But you must keep on pushing and every time you get that opportunity, you must perform and do that week in and week out.
'It is lovely to see how he is putting in the effort and work rate, and hoping for the best.
'I enjoy players like that and it is an example for youngsters on how they should go about approaching a challenge
'If you are not getting selected, you work hard and make sure you use any opportunity you get.'
Coach Rassie Erasmus said he was satisfied with how the Boks had fared in their opening four matches.
'Overall, to play a team like Georgia that's very physical and disruptive is difficult,' he said.
'But that's not an excuse for us to make so many errors.
'We also have to understand that if we chop and change teams like that, we'll be building squad depth, but we'll be losing rhythm.
'I'm glad the guys over the last 25 minutes could get some rhythm into the game. We're fairly happy.
'We could always do better, but it was definitely a team that came out to disrupt the flow of the game.'

Team leaders need to take control, says stand-in Bok skipper Kriel
The experienced midfielder will lead the national side against the Wallabies in Cape Town this weekend. After a disastrous start to the Rugby Championship that saw the Springboks thumped 38-22 by the Wallabies at Ellis Park, stalwart centre Jesse Kriel said that the leaders in the team should have stood up, especially during a desperately poor second half. The Boks had blitzed into a 22-0 lead after just 18 minutes, but were unable to capitalise on the great start as they took a 22-5 lead into the halftime break. The second half was then an unmitigated disaster, as the Wallabies ran in a further five tries, and 38 unanswered points in total, to power to a hugely surprising bonus point win on the Highveld. Kriel, who will captain the Boks in the absence of Siya Kolisi Kriel at the Cape Town Stadium this Saturday, in the second Test against the Wallabies, said that the more experienced players in the team, like himself, should have taken ownership of the game last Saturday. 'Control to our game' 'I am one of most experienced players and maybe I could have handled things better, maybe I could have ensured we brought more control to our game. In that time, we should have played it differently and maybe as a leader in the team I should have ensured we did that,' said Kriel. 'It is never down to just the guys kicking the ball or not kicking it but the guys around them. I think it is easy now to put pressure on one guy, but leaders like myself should have come through there and got us doing what we needed to do at that point. 'It is never about one person but about the team and the leaders like myself need to put our hands up and make those calls during games. It is too late to do it after the game is finished.' Energy loss The loss of energy from the Boks in the second half, and the inability of the 'bomb squad' to help pick them up, will be points of concern heading into the second Test in Cape Town, and they will need to sort that out. 'I can't put my finger on why we were so flat (in the second half) and I will need to watch the game (to try work it out). But there were a few incidents that were big momentum changes and, as I have said, we could have controlled it better,' admitted Kriel. 'It felt like every turnover they got they ended up scoring from. Mistakes at this level end up being punished and you need to keep going for the full 80 minutes. 'But you have to give them credit for the way they turned our mistakes into tries. Australia were really good and no-one must take credit away from them. They were energetic and they had a great second half. It was one of the best second halves I have seen them play.'

Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to insert the Proteas. 'We will be bowling first. The wicket looks dry and spin did play a part in the last T20I. No real expectations, just execute and enjoy playing and winning for Australia. No real surprises for us - Marnus and Carey is back in the XI,' Marsh said at the toss. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma admitted they also wanted to bowl first. 'Yeah, we would have bowled first as well, that's what the stats say, but we'll need to bat well first,' Bavuma said. 'We've got Brevis and Subrayen in today, quite excited at seeing what they can do. We'll want to play according to the conditions and want the guys to enjoy playing.' Bafana exit Chan after dramatic 3-3 draw with Uganda
Despite not having much possession in the first half the Cranes managed to find an opener in the 31st minute when they caught Bafana on the break leading to Patrick Kakande to supply goal scorer Jude Ssemugabi with a telling assist. After the restart Bafana took advantage of Uganda, who suddenly sat back in an attempt to defend their lead. Bafana's first two goals came from the right flank. They first had a free kick taken by skipper Neo Maema and finished off by defender Mphahlele, who was provided with an assist by fellow centre back Kwanda Mngonyama in the 53rd minute. It only took six more minutes for Bafana to take the lead for the first time in this game. This time Wayde Jooste's quick throw was finished off by Thabiso Kutumela, who completed the tournament as South Africa's top scorer with three goals. Despite the result, this performance alone will surely boost the chances of Bafana players who came to this tournament unattached to any club. Most will have some deals sealed with new clubs before the PSL window shuts on September 22.
