Palace: Marcos won't intervene in Senate decision on Sara Duterte impeachment trial
Malacañang on Wednesday said President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. would not intervene whatever the decision of the Senate will be as regards the impeachment complaint of Vice President Sara Duterte.
''Kung ano po ang mangyayari sa Senado sa usaping ito ay nasa kamay po nila 'yan at muli hindi po pang hihimasukan ng Pangulo kung ano man ang magiging trabaho po ng Senado,'' Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said in a briefing in New Delhi.
Senator Rodante Marcoleta, during Wednesday's plenary session, moved to dismiss the verified impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Marcoleta made the motion while delivering his privilege speech, noting that the House of Representatives committed "several violations" in filing the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte.
Voting 13-0-2, the Supreme Court earlier declared the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional, stressing that these are barred by the one-year rule under the Constitution and that it violates her right to due process.
Castro said the President also respects this finding of the High Tribunal.
To recall, three impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte in December 2024, all of which were connected with the alleged misuse of confidential funds.
It was the fourth impeachment complaint that was endorsed by over one-third of lawmakers from the House of Representatives and was later transmitted to the Senate as the Articles of Impeachment.

In February, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed sedition and grave threat complaint against Duterte over the alleged kill order. VP Sara impeachment raps in 2026? Diokno, UP prof say it's possible
A refiling of the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte is possible in 2026 if the Supreme Court (SC) maintains its decision declaring her current impeachment charges unconstitutional, House prosecutor and Akbayan Representative Chel Diokno said Thursday. 'Kung talagang sarado na 'yung lahat ng kalsada para ituloy ang impeachment pansamantala ngayon, yung pinaka-last resort siyempre ay mag-file ulit pagdating ng February 2026,' Diokno told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview. (If all avenues are really closed to continue the impeachment for now, the last resort, of course, is to file again by February 2026.) With 19 votes for, four against, and one abstention, the Senate on Monday voted to transfer to the archives the articles of impeachment against Duterte with some senators citing the SC decision. Voting 13-0, the SC ruled that the articles of impeachment are barred by the one-year rule under Article XI Section 3 paragraph 5 of the Constitution. It also ruled that the articles violate the right to due process. However, motions for reconsideration were filed in connection with the ruling of the high court. For his part, UP College of Law Assistant Professor Paolo Tamase also sees another filing of an impeachment complaint against Duterte next year if the SC maintains its decision despite the motions. 'Kung babaliktarin ng Korte Suprema ang desisyon niya, maaari may maghahain ng tama ng motion sa Senado upang buhayan ulit ang kaso ng impeachment,' Tamase said. Chiz to House: Senate not a playground to run after foes
"To these people, I say this, the Senate is not your playground to run after your political enemies. We are not an accomplice in any grand scheme,' Escudero said. Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero on Wednesday asked members of the House of Representatives to refrain from trying to use the Senate as a tool to go after political adversaries. Escudero made the remark as he explained his vote for archiving the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte. 'To the House of Representatives I say, do not allow yourselves to be used for the blind hatred and ambition of a few who did things haphazardly, gravely abused their discretion, and violated due process, rights under the Constitution as found by the High Court itself,' the Senate president said. 'In spite of all these, you expect everyone to roll over in obedience. When we did not, you moved hell and high water to destroy personalities, malign reputations, and tarnish institutions," he added. "To these people, I say this, the Senate is not your playground to run after your political enemies. We are not an accomplice in any grand scheme,' Escudero said. Escudero also said that he is not willing to play such politicians' game, stressing that he will 'never bow to a mob [and] never cower to the shrillest of voices.' To recall, the House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint. The Vice President was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. Duterte, in return, had entered a 'not guilty' plea in the verified impeachment complaint filed against her, which she called merely a 'scrap of paper.' Recently, the Supreme Court declared the articles of impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional, stressing that it is barred by the one-year rule under the Constitution and that it violates her right to due process. The high court said the Senate cannot acquire jurisdiction over the impeachment proceedings. However, the SC said it was not absolving Duterte from any of the charges against her and that any subsequent impeachment complaint may be filed starting February 6, 2026. The House , through the Office of the Solicitor General, then filed a motion for reconsideration, seeking to reverse the SC decision. The lower chamber argued it should be allowed to perform its exclusive duty to prosecute an impeachable official, and the Senate's to try the case.
