Gautam Gambhir vs The Oval curator: Ashwin says 'boss, what are you doing?'
NEW DELHI: A heated argument broke out at The Oval during India's training session between head coach
Gautam Gambhir
and chief curator Lee Fortis, just two days before the all-important fifth Test against England.
The confrontation was triggered when Fortis allegedly instructed the Indian support staff to maintain a 2.5-meter distance from the pitch—something that didn't sit well with Gambhir and led to a verbal clash.
The exchange escalated quickly, with Gambhir reportedly telling Fortis: "you don't tell any of us what we need to do, you have no right to tell us, you are just a groundsman nothing beyond." In response, Fortis threatened to report the matter further.

Reacting to the incident, veteran spinner
Ravichandran Ashwin
drew comparisons with a similarly tense moment from the Sydney Test during India's 2020-21 tour of Australia.
Poll
Do you think the heated argument between Gambhir and Fortis will impact the team's performance?
Yes, it will create distractions
No, they will focus on the game
"I can draw a parallel with Sydney. When we drew the Test in Sydney, there was an uncertainty because we were back in the bubble and the Gabba Test was under scrutiny. England were comfortably ahead in the series until that last Test. Till the last day, we thought the Test series was sealed.

But the way that game ended, even if it was a draw, and the conversations it triggered and the press conference... it was fiery," Ashwin explained.
IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir loses cool during heated exchange with ground staff at The Oval ahead of 5th Test
He also addressed the recent tensions and their possible influence on the Indian squad's mindset.
"I won't go into whether Gambhir was right about asking for a substitute or how Stokes immediately shut it down... after all of this comes the video of the fight. And I am thinking, 'Boss, what are you doing? This isn't how you want to play with this Indian team,'" he stated.
IND vs ENG: The Oval curator breaks silence on Gautam Gambhir's outburst ahead of 5th Test
Ashwin suggested that such fiery episodes could actually fuel the team's performance, especially under pressure.
"When adversity is against the Indian team, somebody will rise up. When we are pushed against the wall, the Indian team becomes a different kettle of fish. It becomes a different beast. That particular thing going into the Test is a serious advantage for India. It may mean nothing if England play good cricket and India don't end up on the right side, but somehow I feel this is not the way it has to be triggered," Ashwin concluded.
With high stakes already in play, the incident has added a fresh layer of intensity to the series-deciding Test.

Gavaskar walks to Shubman Gill after narrow record miss, floors Indian captain with a priceless gift; makes ‘Gabba' vow
India's Test captain Shubman Gill may have narrowly missed out on breaking one of the most iconic batting records in Indian cricket, but he earned something just as memorable: an emotional nod from the man who set the benchmark more than five decades ago. On a tense third day at the Oval, as India chased a series-levelling win against England, the post-match scenes provided a heartwarming moment when Sunil Gavaskar gifted Gill a signed cap and shirt as a gesture of respect towards the youngster's performance in the series. Sunil Gavaskar shared a heartwarming moment with Indian captain Shubman Gill(X) Gill ended the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 754 runs in 10 innings, falling just 21 runs short of surpassing Gavaskar's India record for most runs in a Test series. However, Gill's incredible batting contribution played a key role in keeping the series alive, and Gavaskar, who has been part of the broadcast team, walked up to the Indian captain after play and presented him with personal memorabilia, a rare gesture from one of Indian cricket's most revered figures. 'This is a little cap, which I give to very few people with my signature,' Gavaskar told Gill as he handed it over. The 74-year-old then revealed he would be wearing his 'lucky jacket' the next day, the same one he wore during India's famous win at the Gabba in 2021, when Gill scored a defining 91 in the fourth-innings chase of 328. Watch: Gill came into the fifth Test with a real shot at toppling Gavaskar's 774-run mark but endured a rare off-game, scoring 21 and 11. His second-innings dismissal, off the first ball after lunch, ended the chase for the record. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old did manage to surpass Gavaskar in another corner of the record books. His 754-run tally now stands as the most by an Indian Test captain in a single series, surpassing Gavaskar's 732 runs from the 1978/79 series against West Indies, a mark that had stood for 46 years. India have set England a daunting target of 374 in the final Test, and while time may not be their enemy, facing a relentless Indian pace attack led by Mohammed Siraj promises to be the real challenge. England lost their first wicket of the innings on the last ball of the day, with Siraj castling Zak Crawley; the side finished Day 3 at 50/1.

NBA Trade Rumors: Philadelphia 76ers Urged to Pursue $60 Million Chicago Bulls Star to Preserve Joel Embiid's Longevity
Nikola Vucevic (Image via Twitter Chicago Bulls) As the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, the Philadelphia 76ers face a familiar concern: keeping Joel Embiid healthy and dominant throughout a long campaign. With Embiid's injury history casting a shadow over the team's playoff hopes, analysts believe the front office must prioritize reducing his workload - starting with a reliable backup center. One compelling name being floated: Nikola Vucevic. A Familiar Issue: Embiid's Health Could Define the Season Joel Embiid is unquestionably one of the league's most dominant forces when he's on the floor. The reigning MVP has built a resume of regular-season brilliance, but his postseason consistency has often been undercut by injuries. The Sixers' championship window depends on finding ways to keep Embiid fresh and available deep into the playoffs. Why Nikola Vucevic Makes Sense for the Philadelphia 76ers Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis (Image via Steven M Falk/ Staff Photographer) The idea of acquiring Nikola Vucevic emerged following speculation that the Chicago Bulls could pursue a contract buyout. If that happens, Vucevic could become a key depth piece in the Philadelphia 76ers , giving Embiid a legitimate break without tanking the team's interior presence. In a recent FanSided article, Nicolas Kyle Pring outlined the potential impact of such a move: 'Having said that, Vucevic would be a dream short-term acquisition for a team like the 76ers, which will not need him to do the heavy lifting as he did in Chicago. The Philadelphia 76ers desperately need to ease the load on Embiid, and installing Vucevic as his backup would heavily incentivize the coaching staff into reducing the former's minutes and workload as much as possible,' Pring wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 1 Household Item That Visibly Tightens Saggy Skin GlamourSkin Learn More Undo What Nikola Vucevic Brings to the Table While Nikola Vucevic may not match Embiid's scoring explosiveness, he offers a versatile skill set that could prove invaluable for a second unit. Vucevic's Key Strengths: • Reliable 3-point shooter: Stretches the floor and creates spacing for guards • Solid interior scorer: Effective in the paint with footwork and touch • Experienced veteran: Brings maturity and poise to the locker room • Rebounding presence: Capable of holding his own against other bigs Career Snapshot Category Stat Points 18.5 PPG Rebounds 10.1 RPG Field Goal % 53.0% 3-Point % 40.2% With those numbers, Vucevic could be the best backup Embiid has had in his career - capable of anchoring the second unit and even starting in stretches if needed. Addressing a Long-Standing Need The Sixers have long struggled to find dependable bench depth at center. From DeAndre Jordan to Paul Reed, the rotation behind Embiid has fluctuated in quality and consistency. Vucevic would not only bring production but also alleviate pressure on the coaching staff to ride Embiid hard during the regular season. My Verdict on the Trade: A Deal the Sixers Can't Afford to Miss? While it remains to be seen whether the Bulls will indeed buy out Vucevic, the Sixers would be wise to monitor the situation closely. The long-term viability of their championship hopes rests on Embiid's availability, and adding a player like Vucevic could be the strategic insurance policy they desperately need.
