Films that put Columbus on the big screen

Axios10-07-2025
"Superman" flies into theaters this week, putting Cleveland at the center of the cinematic world. But we can't let them have all the fun.
Why it matters: Big movies bring big money to Ohio. Film tax credits and a rising reputation have put the state on Hollywood's radar in recent years.
The big picture: Columbus has yet to host a blockbuster on the same scale as Cleveland, but it's no film desert. We often play a supporting role.
Inspired by the new Ohio Goes to the Movies program we highlighted last week, here's a list of films you may not realize had local ties:
✈️ "Air Force One" (1997)
Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base served as the Ramstein Air Base in Germany in this Oscar-nominated action movie starring Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman.
🏛️ "Traffic" (2000)
The Ohio Statehouse was a federal courthouse for some scenes in this Oscar winner starring Michael Douglas about America's war on drugs.
🎓 "Little Man Tate" (1991)
The university for gifted students that 7-year-old Fred Tate attends featured landmarks from a few Ohio colleges, including OSU's Wexner Center.
🍎 "Teachers" (1984)
The old Central High School — present-day COSI — was the setting for this dark dramedy set in Columbus.
🫢 "Speak" (2004)
A Lifetime movie with a cult following that launched Kristen Stewart's career was filmed at Eastmoor Academy. The film is an adaptation of a young adult novel.
💪 "Aftermath" (2017)
Arnold Schwarzenegger loves Columbus, so it's no surprise he starred in a locally shot movie — which even included a cameo by former Mayor Michael B. Coleman.
🎥 "I Am Wrath" (2016)
This revenge film starring John Travolta was based in and mostly filmed in Columbus, showcasing iconic locations like the Statehouse, the Short North and Buckeye Donuts.
While not filmed here, this sci-fi flick Ohioan Steven Spielberg directed was set in Columbus in the year 2045, so it gets an honorable mention.
We'll check back and see how it holds up in 20 years.

JP Saxe's North American tour cancelled over low ticket sales despite online appeal

TORONTO - A Toronto singer-songwriter who was set to tour North America this fall says he's cancelled his series of concerts over sluggish ticket sales and the high cost of life on the road. JP Saxe took to social media this week, saying that if he didn't sell about 20,000 tickets to his upcoming Make Yourself at Home tour within 48 hours, it would likely be cancelled. In a follow-up video, he says 2,000 more tickets were sold, but it wasn't enough to save the tour. Saxe says he's grateful for the extra sales, that tickets will be fully refunded and he's looking to make sure similar cancellations never happen again. The Grammy-nominated musician, best known for his 2019 single 'If the World Was Ending' with Julia Michaels, was set to play more than 25 dates, including Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver. The cancellation comes as live music faces mass pressure, compounded by a shaky economy, years of inflation and concert ticket prices that — in many cases — have skyrocketed by hundreds of dollars this year. 'Those 2,000 tickets were a reminder ... of how wonderful it can be to ask for help and watch a community come together, and this really was the nicest the internet has ever been to me,' he said in a video posted to social media platform TikTok. 'I'm grateful to each one of you who bought a ticket, and I'm really sorry.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 2, 2025.

Anthony Mackie Says an Unreleased Film From the ‘Worst Director to Ever Direct' Almost Cost Him His ‘Hurt Locker' Role: ‘They Offered It To Somebody Else'

Anthony Mackie is opening up about how he almost lost his role in 'The Hurt Locker' because of another director's unreleased film. During a recent episode of Variety's 'Know Their Lines,' Mackie shared the backstory behind being cast in the 2009 Oscar-winner. 'We shot that in 2007, and I remember I was doing a movie in North Carolina with quite possibly the worst director to ever direct. Ironically, because of that the movie never came out.' He continued, 'Because of that, the movie went over and I had to pull out of 'Hurt Locker.' They offered it to somebody else, and he said no because it wasn't enough money.' Despite Mackie being tied up with the other film, the production offered him the role again and was willing to wait until he wrapped the unreleased project. 'I went from this sucky director who had no business in being in the business or in the director's chair to Kathryn Bigelow,' Mackie said. 'The moment I landed in Amman, Jordan, we hit the ground running [with] cultural research, military research, character studies – the real work a director does. It really was poignant to me the type of people I want to work with and the type of people who shouldn't be working.' Mackie's performance in 'The Hurt Locker' was a career-defining role as he played Sergeant J.T. Sanborn, a soldier and member of the fictional bomb disposal unit in Baghdad, Iraq. The film received widespread critical praise for its portrayal of the war in Iraq. At the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010, 'The Hurt Locker' took home six awards from its nine nominations for best motion picture, best achievement in directing, best writing, original screenplay, best achievement in film editing, best achievement in sound mixing and best achievement in sound editing. I'm still obsessed with this masterpiece movie from 2019 — and you can stream it now on Prime Video

For a drummer, the literal heartbeat of any band, the only thing more precious than your hands are your ears, crucial not only for maintaining timing and rhythm but also the dynamics and community of your fellow musicians around you. The thought of losing that vital sense lends a visceral, pounding fear worthy of a horror movie in 'Sound of Metal,' a devastating musical drama that has haunted yours truly since I saw it back in 2019. Led by Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed ('The Phoenician Scheme,' 'The Night Of') and directed and co-written by Darius Marder ('Loot,' 'The Place Beyond the Pines'), the heart-crushing title poses an impossible question to any musician: Would you risk your own hearing to continue making the music you love? Such is the fate of Ahmed's Ruben Stone after one too many gigs of hard-hitting, ear-splitting metal music, a choice made even more complicated by the fact of Ruben's sobriety efforts. One of the best movies on Prime Video, the impact of 'Sound of Metal' thumps on long after the credits roll. Here's why you should check out the drama on Amazon's streaming service and add it to your watchlist. In 'Sound of Metal,' Riz Ahmed stars as Ruben Stone, a punk-rock drummer and recovering addict whose world is upturned when he starts experiencing intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist warns him that his condition will worsen should he not give up his base-thumping lifestyle, Ruben begins to spiral, mourning the loss of his music career and life's passion. His girlfriend-slash-bandmate Lou Berger (Olivia Cooke) checks Ruben into a secluded sober house for the deaf in the hopes that it will prevent him from relapse. There, he learns not only how to be a member of the deaf community but also how to face the realities of his new normal. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Along with being one of the most acclaimed movies of 2019, 'Sound of Metal' is one of the finest examples that cinema is as much an aural experience as it is a visual medium. The musical drama scored Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Ahmed and Best Supporting Actor for Paul Raci, as well as deserved wins for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. The masterful sound design shifts between high volume, distorted noise and sudden silence, not only mimicking the experience of hearing loss but immersively and viscerally putting the audience inside the perspective of Ahmed's Ruben throughout the entire feature, never letting up that this is a life-altering situation that the character cannot escape. For the strength of that sound experience as well as its affecting acting performances, the drama received near-universal praise from critics. It garnered an excellent 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 281 reviews, with the site's critical consensus reading: "An evocative look at the experiences of the deaf community, 'Sound of Metal' is brought to life by Riz Ahmed's passionate performance."
