Delhi University to launch course on navigating modern love, red flags, and heartbreaks for Gen Z

Time of India2 days ago

Delhi University
is introducing a new elective course titled 'Negotiating Intimate Relationships' to guide
Gen Z
students through the complexities of modern romance, heartbreak, and emotional boundaries in a digital age shaped by Tinder and Instagram.
Scheduled to begin in the 2025–26 academic year, the course is open to undergraduates from all disciplines and will be offered by the Department of Psychology. It aims to spark essential conversations around intimacy, friendships, jealousy, and break-ups — topics that are often left unaddressed in traditional education but have become increasingly relevant, especially in the wake of rising incidents of emotionally charged crimes among youth.
The decision to launch the course comes amid growing concerns over the emotional volatility seen in young adults, often exacerbated by social media and the lack of early education around healthy relationship dynamics. Recent cases in Delhi have underscored this troubling trend — in just a few weeks between May and June 2025, three young women in their late teens and early twenties were brutally murdered by jealous partners.

While not all incidents involved students, experts say these tragedies reflect a wider crisis: many young people are unequipped to handle rejection, emotional distress, or conflict in relationships. 'These aren't isolated crimes,' noted a psychologist familiar with the situation. 'They are manifestations of an emotional vacuum and poor regulation, worsened by online surveillance of romantic partners.'
The four-credit course, which includes three lectures and one tutorial weekly, is tailored for students with a foundational understanding of psychology. It offers a rare academic space to discuss relationships in a structured, judgment-free environment.
Live Events
The syllabus is divided into four key units:
The Psychology of friendships and intimate relationships – exploring the formation of bonds, transitions from friendship to romantic relationships, and the nature of long-term partnerships.
Understanding love – covering love theories like Sternberg's triangular theory and the two-factor theory, along with discussions on sexuality and emotional attachment.
Signs of relationships going sour – arguably the most vital segment, this unit will help students recognize early warning signs such as excessive jealousy, infidelity, emotional abuse, and partner violence.
Flourishing relationships – focusing on nurturing healthy connections through effective communication, empathy, and emotional support within relationships and families.
The course is designed to be interactive and engaging. Tutorials will involve social media analysis, self-awareness exercises, debates on digital dating dilemmas, and pop culture critiques — for instance, examining portrayals of toxic masculinity in Kabir Singh or the idealized romance in Titanic.
'Movies often glamorize toxic love, but in a classroom, they become opportunities to unpack harmful norms,' explained Latika Gupta, a DU faculty member. 'We need to start conversations on emotional health early if we're serious about preventing future harm.'
Gupta emphasized the need for this course by pointing out that emotional literacy — from setting boundaries to handling rejection — is rarely taught. 'If young people had these tools, some of the tragedies we're seeing might have been avoided,' she said.

"If I Was Quiet...": Raja Raghuvanshi's Sister On Backlash Over Reels

New Delhi: Raja Raghuvanshi's sister, Srashti, has received massive backlash over her Instagram reels, lashing out at Sonam - her sister-in-law and the prime accused in the murder of her brother. Ever since Raja's body was found in a gorge in Meghalaya, Srashti has been posting reels raising awareness around her brother's death and calling for justice. However, this did not sit well with users as they accused her of using her family tragedy as a way to gain traction online. Srashti has now responded to the backlash, saying that if she had stayed quiet, then the case would have been closed in two to three days - with no trace of Raja's killers. "Whoever is saying that I'm using my brother's death to increase my followers and views, it's not like that. If I hadn't posted and it had not gone viral, maybe his killers would not have been found yet. If we had kept quiet then this case would have closed in two to three days. We have seen so many such cases - killers would not have been found," she said in a post on Instagram. Srashti said that whatever she can do for her murdered brother, she will. "Whoever I have to fight with, wherever I have to go, I will make sure my voice reaches everyone. Whoever says anything otherwise, it's wrong. I can see I'm being trolled everywhere. But what are you doing for my brother? You are just slamming me. But you should think about how a sister is raising her voice for her brother. You should support me, assist me. But you are blaming me. I don't know what to say," she said. She added, "But whatever I have to do for my brother, wherever I have to raise my voice, I will do." View this post on Instagram A post shared by shrasti Raghuwanshi 💫 (@shrasti_raghuwansh) The massive backlash online began when Srashti, who has 4,81,000 followers on Instagram, posted a video lashing out at Sonam - with the couple's marriage picture and a video as the backdrop. "My brother had vowed to be with Sonam Raghuvanshi for seven lives, but she couldn't stay with him for even seven days. What did he do that you killed him? You could have eloped if you liked someone else. Why did you kill him? Why did you take away someone's brother, someone's son," she said, sobbing. Sonam, 24, and her lover, Raj, were arrested on Monday along with their three aides, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan, for allegedly murdering 29-year-old Raja. The Honeymoon Murder Case Raja and Sonam got married on May 11. Nine days later, they left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20 - with a one-way ticket in hand. The couple roamed around in the Northeast for three days before going "missing". When their family members could not reach them, they reached out to the police. What initially started as a probe to find the couple, turned into a murder investigation when Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2, ten days after the brutal crime. A machete, suspected to be the murder weapon, was also recovered. His preliminary autopsy report revealed that he was attacked twice - once each on the back and front of his head. On the night of June 7, the 'missing' wife was found in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police, and was subsequently taken into custody. The Meghalaya police then launched 'Operation Honeymoon' by forming a 20-member team and arrested the remaining four accused in overnight raids. All five accused have been brought to Shillong and sent to eight-day police custody.

Woman, aide arrested for robbing in-laws in Khanna

A woman and her aide were arrested for allegedly plotted a theft in her own in-laws' home. The woman, a resident of Kulahad village in Khanna, drugged the whole family, stealing cash and jewellery from the house. According to police officials, Kamaljeet Kaur befriended Dilraj Singh, alias Bholu, a resident of Peer Sohana in Mohali, through Instagram. Dilraj had recently returned to India from Malaysia. What started as an online friendship soon turned into an affair, and the two began planning a future together, including marriage. Kamaljeet allegedly devised a criminal plan to fund their life together—by robbing her own family. Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Jyoti Yadav stated that Kamaljeet deliberately drugged nearly 15 members of her family late at night on June 3, rendering them unconscious. She then invited her aide into the house, handing over the keys to cupboards and trunks. Dilraj allegedly looted gold and silver jewellery worth lakhs, along with a high-end iPhone, and fled the scene. The complaint was lodged by Kamaljeet's father-in-law, Balwinder Singh, at Malaudh police station the same night. Initially, the case was registered against unknown accused. However, the truth soon unraveled with the help of technical surveillance and CCTV footage. The SSP confirmed that both accused have confessed to their crimes. 'The conspiracy was well thought out and clearly premeditated,' she said. 'Kamaljeet not only betrayed the trust of her family but also endangered the lives of her relatives by allegedly administering an unknown substance to render them unconscious. This was not a spontaneous act, but a calculated criminal plan.' During the interrogation, Kamaljeet reportedly admitted she wished to elope and marry Dilraj after the theft. Their plans, however, were thwarted by prompt police action. The stolen items recovered from the accused include 11 gold rings, four pairs of earrings, a gold necklace, a bangle, and several silver ornaments. The stolen iPhone has also been seized.
