China blocks Wells Fargo banker from leaving due to 'criminal case'
Wells Fargo said on Friday it was "working through the appropriate channels" to secure Ms Mao's return, but did not release any details as to why the US citizen had been prevented from leaving the country. "The Chinese government has, for many years, imposed exit bans on US citizens and other foreign nationals in China, often without a clear and transparent judicial process for resolution."However, Mr Guo told reporters that "everyone in China, whether they are Chinese or foreigners, must abide by Chinese laws", adding that Ms Mao "has the obligation to cooperate with the investigation".The exit ban comes at a time of diplomatic tension between China and the US, particularly within the business space, as US President Donald Trump's tariffs continue to put strain on the two countries' business ties.Beijing recently pledged to allow more participation in a range of its business sectors, in a stated bid to attract more foreign investment amid worsening geopolitical tensions."China will, as always, welcome people from all countries to visit China for tourism and business," Mr Guo said at Monday's press briefing.

Microsoft says Chinese 'threat actors', including state-sponsored hackers, have exploited security vulnerabilities in its SharePoint document-sharing software servers and are targeting the data of businesses that use it. The US technology company said it had observed three groups – the Chinese state-backed Linen Typhoon and Violet Typhoon, and Storm-2603, which is believed to be China-based – using 'newly disclosed security vulnerabilities' to target internet-facing servers hosting the platform. The announcement came amid reports in the Financial Times that Amazon was shutting down its artificial intelligence lab in Shanghai, while the consultancy McKinsey has stopped its China business from taking on work related to AI, amid worsening geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing. Microsoft and IBM have recently scaled back China-based research and development projects, as US officials are stepping up their scrutiny of US companies working in AI in China. Microsoft said in a blogpost that the vulnerabilities were in on-premises SharePoint servers, which are commonly used by companies, but not in its cloud-based service. Many large organisations and businesses use SharePoint as a platform for storing documents and allowing colleagues to collaborate on them, and it is regarded as working well alongside other Microsoft products including Office and Outlook. Microsoft said the attacks had begun as early as 7 July, and said the hackers were trying to exploit vulnerabilities to 'gain initial access to target organisations'. The vulnerabilities allow attackers to spoof authentication credentials and execute malicious code remotely on servers. Microsoft said it had observed attacks where the attackers had sent a request to a SharePoint server 'enabling the theft of the key material'. It warned that it assessed with 'high confidence' that the hacking groups would continue to attack unpatched on-premises SharePoint systems. Microsoft said Linen Typhoon had been 'focused on stealing intellectual property, primarily targeting organisations related to government, defence, strategic planning, and human rights' since 2012. Chinese automakers gain ground in contracting European market, data shows
July 23 (Reuters) - Car registrations across Europe declined in June, with a 4.4% year-on-year drop to 1.25 million vehicles, data from Jato Dynamics showed on Wednesday. While overall demand softened, Chinese automakers continued to gain ground, taking a record market share and squeezing several established European brands, the research data showed. Chinese automakers are expanding in Europe, breaking into a market traditionally dominated by European and American brands supported by their cheaper pricing amid a shift towards electric vehicles. This has stoked trade tensions between Brussels and Beijing, including a row over EU tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, imposed to protect European producers. Chinese brands nearly doubled their combined share of the European market to 5.1% in the first half of 2025, just shy of Mercedes-Benz's ( opens new tab 5.2%, the report said. Registrations of Chinese vehicles surged 91% since the start of the year.
