‘A trail of destruction': Alleged drug driver rams businesses before 50km police pursuit
An alleged drug driver caused up to $100,000 worth of damage when he rammed around 30 western Sydney shopfronts, before a 50-kilometre-long pursuit that ended in a dramatic arrest at Sydney Airport. The rampage started just before 2am on Wednesday, when members of the public reported a black Ford Ranger driving dangerously and ramming businesses on Queen Street in Campbelltown. Shortly after, the driver, Daniel Ian Gordon Young drove into the carpark of the Campbelltown police station before leaving. Highway patrol officers tried to stop the 47-year-old on Queen Street before pursuing him along the Hume Highway and the M5. A police helicopter tracked him for more than 50 kilometres before he crashed into a boom gate at the entrance to a restricted area of Sydney Airport and was arrested. In Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, Young pleaded guilty to not stopping and driving dangerously during a police pursuit, destroying or damaging property worth more than $15,000, causing damage to a major facility, possessing a prohibited drug and breaching bail. He was refused bail and will be sentenced in Campbelltown Local Court on June 17. Inspector Greg Donaldson said up to 30 businesses had suffered varying levels of damage, including broken windows and 'major structural damage', because of Young's 'dangerous actions'. 'He certainly left a trail of destruction,' Donaldson said.
