Ringo Starr admits 'I didn't practice' on drums but still improved as musician
Ringo Starr has insisted he got by with help from his friends when it comes to drumming.
The Beatle says he didn't become a top drummer through practice, but simply by constant performing with pals. The Fab Four beat man described prepping moves at his home alone as 'boring" and never took lessons.
Ringo, 84, admitted that his work behind the kit improved because he just went out and played shows. And at that started as a teenager working in a school equipment factory playing with pals to workers during lunch breaks. Asked whether he spent hours in his bedroom or having lessons to become so good behind the kit, Ringo confessed: 'I didn't. I hate practicing.
'I hated sitting there. I tried it when I first got the kit upstairs in the back room like in all those movies that were made. And it was the most boring thing ever.
"I did all my learning with other musicians, other bands. I was lucky because there were a lot of us around and we weren't all great players. We were all learning.
'So I learned everything with everyone else at that time in Liverpool."
Ringo got lucky by having pals who loved to do jam sessions during lunchtimes at their local factory.
'But I was lucky in the factory. The guy who lived next door to me in the street worked in the factory. He was Eddie Miles, a great
guitarist. He's just one of those guys, who could play anything. And my best friend Roy had made a tea chest bass and I had a snare
drum and brushes. 'And we used to play to the men at lunchtime in the basement. And that's how I started. And now look at me.'
Ringo recalled to AXS TV in the US how he had a great well respected role as a drummer with a bigger band than The Beatles in the early 1960s.
Ringo did the rhythms for Rory Storm And The Hurricanes, who were Liverpool's top act with bigger audiences and respect than John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best.
But Ringo boasted that he adored their work and would always be in the audience cheering them at gig.
"I loved them from Germany where we met really. We were playing as Rory and Hurricanes and the Beatles on the same club. And I loved John, Paul and George. I just loved that front line and I'd be there for the last gig just sitting there watching the front line requesting songs.
"So when they asked me to join I had no hesitation, but people did say, 'are you going to leave Rory?; I said, 'yeah, yeah, I'm going to leave and make a step up'
Ringo and his All Starr Band have announced a run of autumn tour dates, built around a six date residency at The Venetian in Las Vegas.

James Bond legend Joe Caroff has died aged 103. The unsung hero of the iconic film franchise was a largely unknown graphic designer who created the iconic 007 gun logo, as well as film posters for West Side Story and The Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night. His sons Peter and Michael Caroff told the New York Times that he died in hospice care at his Manhattan home on Sunday, just one day before his 104th birthday. In 1962, he was asked to create a letterhead for a publicity release linked to Dr. No, which was the first Bond film. Speaking to James Bond In The Making back in 2021, Caroff recalled: '[United Artists executive David Chasman] said, 'I need a little decorative thing on top'. 'I knew [Bond's] designation was 007, and when I wrote the stem of the seven, I thought, 'That looks like the handle of a gun to me.' It was very spontaneous, no effort, it was an instant piece of creativity.' Caroff was inspired by the Walther PPK, Bond author Ian Fleming's favourite gun, as he added a barrel and trigger to 007. He was paid just $300 – which was the going rate at the time – but he didn't get any credit, residuals or royalties despite the logo being used on every film and pieces of merch all over the world. 'It was like a little publicity piece for me,' he acknowledged. Although he was ignored by Bond bosses for decades, EON Productions along with then-franchise chiefs Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson and gifted him an Omega watch complete with a 007 engraving for his 100th birthday. Sadly, he previously admitted he didn't save his original sketches and renders over the years. Tragic death of Teletubbies star Tinky Winky as actor found in unusual circumstances
Simon Barnes was found dead in the street after moving across the country in search of a new life. An actor who starred as Tinky Winky in the hit children's TV show Teletubbies was found dead in tragic circumstances - just after moving across the country for a fresh start in life. Trained dancer and choreographer Simon Shelton Barnes was bidding to turn his life around after struggling with alcohol and turned his back on London. He moved to the Wirral, nearly 200 miles away from his previous home in Bedfordshire, hoping the distance between the areas would help him to move on. But within weeks, he was found dead on a street in Liverpool. Close pal Jane Rees reportedly said that Simon had been struggling living away from his three kids, who were the centre of his life. The Mirror reports his flatmate Judith said at the time about his tragic death, "I'm very floored at losing him, he was just the best company." An inquest found that he had died from hypothermia after going on a night out in January 2018. TV stars Emily Atak and Robert Dawes were family members. He had a "medical history of alcohol dependence" and both of them made devastating tributes to the actor after his death. Robert said, "It's been a very tough week and we are all trying to look after the family as best we can." Emily movingly paid tribute to her "wonderful uncle" by saying he was "the kindest and most talented man you could ever wish to meet," adding that he was "loved by all who knew him, and will be forever". Simon previously said about his major role as Tinky Winky, "We used to receive a lot of fan mail from kind and parents, I suppose we were a bit like The Beatles or Take That of children's television." Tinky Winky's orientation was also a question levied at Simon over the years. "People always ask me if Tinky Winky is gay," he said. "But the character is supposed to be a three-year-old so the question is really quite silly." The legacy of the characters Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa, and Po was so strong that the show was rebooted in 2014 by CBeebies, due to the popularity of the original first five seasons that ran from 1997 and 2001.
