ITR filing FY 2024-25: Don't make the mistake of not reporting tax exempt incomes such as PPF, gratuity; here's why
ITR filing FY 2024-25: PPF interest is tax free. So is the interest coming from tax free bonds. The maturity proceeds of life insurance plans are also exempt from tax. But while the taxman lets you pocket these tax free incomes, he demands full disclosure.
'While exempt income is not taxable, it is mandatory to disclose it in ITR under the 'Exempt Income' schedule,' advises Nishant Khemani, Managing Partner of the Saturn Consulting Group.
There are several sources of tax free income (see table). But many taxpayers make the mistake of not mentioning these incomes in their return. Reporting your exempt income in your tax return isn't just about ticking a box — it's about ensuring that you don't face scrutiny later in life.
When it comes to filing your tax return, transparency is critical. The return must account for all financial transactions during the year. This includes incomes that are tax free.
This disclosure is mandatory if your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit or you are otherwise required to file an ITR. Though there is no penalty for not reporting this income, taxpayers who include this income in the tax return will find it easier to explain the source of funds in future, especially for high-value exempt receipts like maturity of PPF account or life insurance policy.

'If a large amount (more than Rs 50 lakh) is deposited in a savings bank account in a year, the bank is obliged to report it to the tax authorities,' warns Umesh Jethani, Founder of Apki Return.
Keep in mind that the Annual Information Statement may already have records of exempt income (tax-free bond interest, life insurance receipts, provident fund payments). If these are missing from your ITR, it can trigger a notice for 'information mismatch'. Though it will ultimately get resolved, there is the possibility of a delay in processing refunds if the return is flagged for verification.

PM Modi To Inaugurate 2 Highway Projects In Big Push To Declog Delhi
New Delhi: In a major infrastructure push to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time across Delhi and several other cities in the National Capital Region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will shortly inaugurate two major projects -- the Urban Extension Road-II and Dwarka Expressway. The two projects, with a combined cost of Rs 11,000 crore, reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision of "creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility", the Prime Minister's Office has said ahead of the inauguration event at Rohini today. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari are also at the event. The Urban Extension Road - II, a six-lane expressway over 75 km long, begins at NH 44, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka and ends at Delhi-Gurugram Expressway on NH-48 near Mahipalpur. It forms a semi-circle on Delhi's western side. The Prime Minister today opened the Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch of Urban Extension Road-II with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat. This stretch, the construction of which cost Rs 5,580 crore, will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and choke points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-09. "The new spurs will give direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, improve industrial connectivity, cut city traffic, and speed up goods movement in the NCR," the PMO said. According to officials, the new link will reduce travel time from Indira Gandhi International Airport to various points in southwest and northwest Delhi by 40 to 60 per cent. The other project the Prime Minister opened today is a 10.1-km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway. Developed for Rs 5,360 crore, this section will boost connectivity to Yashobhoomi, Delhi Metro's Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and Dwarka cluster Bus Depot. There are two sections of this stretch: a 5.9-km stretch from Shiv Murti intersection to Road Under Bridge at Dwarka Sector-21, and a 4.2-km section from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana Border and providing connectivity between the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II. In March last year, the Prime Minister inaugurated the 19-km Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway.

EVs set to dominate 2025 festive launches, rare-earth crunch a concern
The August–November window is expected to be one of the busiest for electric vehicle (EV) launches in India's history. Alongside the e-Vitara, Tata Sierra EV, and VinFast SUVs, luxury carmakers will unveil the BMW iX 2025, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric. Mahindra's Vision S and SXT concepts are also progressing towards production. The two-wheeler segment will see new scooters and premium electric motorcycles, though mass-market e-motorcycles remain at least a year away. Nikhil Dhaka, Vice-President at Primus Partners, said: 'The August to November festive window could be the heaviest EV launch season India has ever seen. We're looking at mass-market SUVs, luxury EVs, and accessible scooters all hitting the market at the same time, a rare confluence that could energise both urban and semi-urban demand.' The first half of 2025 has already brought a surge of EV activity in India, with global giants and domestic automakers ramping up launches ahead of the festive season. Tesla's long-awaited debut with the Model Y in July set the tone, followed by mass-market entries such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Harrier EV, Kia Carens Clavis EV, Hyundai Venue EV, and Mahindra's BE 6 and XEV 9E. The Tata Safari EV was also confirmed, while two-wheeler makers introduced fresh options such as the Kinetic Green DX electric scooter. The Tata Harrier EV, launched on 3 June, opened bookings in early July with prices expected between Rs 24 lakh and Rs 30 lakh. Kia rolled out its Carens Clavis EV on 15 July, starting at Rs 17.99 lakh. In the pipeline, Maruti Suzuki's first all-electric SUV, the e-Vitara, is slated for a September launch with two battery options and a range of up to 500 km. Vietnamese automaker VinFast is also preparing for its India entry with the VF6 and VF7, manufactured at its Tamil Nadu plant. Despite the momentum, industry stakeholders warn of headwinds. 'EV penetration will grow only if raw material availability is secured,' said Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) President C.S. Vigneshwar, pointing to rare-earth magnet supply concerns. Passenger vehicle EV penetration is currently estimated at 4–4.5 per cent, while two-wheelers are at 5–7 per cent. Analysts note that adoption is heavily tied to new product launches, with penetration often plateauing after the initial demand surge. Other barriers flagged by analysts include reduced incentives, charging infrastructure gaps, and resale value concerns. Regulatory pressure from stricter emission norms is pushing OEMs to invest, but supply chain bottlenecks — especially in sourcing rare-earth materials — could delay festive-season rollouts. 'EV adoption in India is very much launch-driven — we see a spike in penetration after new models hit the market, but it often plateaus without sustained demand drivers. Supply chain issues, especially rare-earth shortages, could slow down the pace we are expecting this festive season,' said Kumar Rakesh, Analyst at BNP Paribas. Still, the breadth of upcoming products, from affordable scooters to aspirational luxury SUVs, signals a widening of India's EV market. If launches proceed as planned, this festive season could mark a new high point for electric mobility in the country.
