Major drug bust in Durban: Hawks seize R350,000 in cannabis and narcotics
Police dismantled a fully equipped indoor cannabis laboratory near Morningside, Durban, seizing drugs and equipment worth an estimated R350,000.

A 43-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday, after a clandestine cannabis laboratory was dismantled during a high-impact operation near Morningside, Durban.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday during a joint operation between members of the Hawks' Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Durban Metro Police Drug Team, the Metro K9 Unit, Durban Flying Squad, and the eThekwini Infrastructure Task Team.
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo says police acted on intelligence that pointed to an indoor cannabis cultivation setup in the area.
'A disruptive operation was swiftly conducted, and they proceeded to the said building,' he confirmed.
'During the search, police found indoor cannabis plants, ecstasy tablets, crack cocaine, chemicals and equipment to the street value of approximately R350 000.00,' Mhlongo added.

NDPP secures R4. 7 million forfeiture order against alleged drug syndicate member

Image: Picture: Tshwane Metro Police Department National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi has secured a R4.7 million order against one of the six people arrested during a R15m drug bust in Derdepoort, Tshwane earlier this year. Henry Craill, 32, was among the six suspects arrested in February after law enforcement authorities uncovered a drug syndicate in the capital city. The group appeared at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court after they allegedly sold steroids, scheduled medicine, stimulants, and other performance-enhancing drugs via the internet. According to Batohi's papers filed at the Gauteng High Court, Tshwane, Craill's nearly R751,000 held at Absa and another R519,000 in the name of GEO-Zone Consulting CC is now forfeited to the state. Batohi applied for and was granted a preservation of the property order in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca). The order pertains to Craill, in his personal capacity, and in his capacity as a member of Geo Zone Consulting in Pretoria and all persons who may have an interest in the property. 'If you have an interest in the property, you should understand that it is now at risk. You are advised to obtain legal advice on whether your interest can be protected and, if so, on how to protect it. You are notified that the NDPP will, within 90 days of publication of this notice, apply to the high court under section 48 of the Poca for a forfeiture order,' reads the court papers. In addition, the preservation order will remain in force until the application for a forfeiture order is finalised and until any forfeiture order that is made is satisfied. The court appealed to anyone intending to oppose the application for a forfeiture order or intends to apply for an order excluding their interest from the forfeiture order in respect of the property must enter an appearance in terms of the order. Interested parties have been asked to make an appearance and comply with the requirements and must be delivered to the Office of the State Attorney. 'If you enter an appearance in terms of the order you will be entitled to be given 14 days notice of the application by the applicant (Batohi) for a forfeiture order in respect of the property,' the high court explained. The court warned that if interested parties fail to enter an appearance in terms of the order or to comply with the requirements, they will not be given notice of the application for a forfeiture order and will not be entitled to appear at the hearing of the application. 'You may, on good cause shown (including the non-availability of any other suitable remedy to protect your legitimate rights or interests), on three days notice in urgent instances and at least seven days notice in other instances to the applicant, and within eight days of becoming aware of the order, apply for reconsideration of the order,' the court ordered.

Alleged cop killers denied bail as Hawks reveal sinister plot
On 26 June 2025, the Hawks said three alleged cop killers have been denied bail by the Ermelo District Court. 'The trio were remanded in custody for further investigation,' said Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. Siyabonga Duba (31), Njabulo Zwane (27) and Vusi Shabalala (43) form part of 10 suspects who are facing murder charges. All 10 are accused of murdering the Ermelo Vehicle Investigation Unit commander, Lieutenant Colonel Piet Pretorius. Additionally, they are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They are also charged with defeating the ends of justice. He said on 16 January 2025, the suspects allegedly concealed the murder weapon and set alight a vehicle that had been used in the commission of the crime. 'The first five suspects were arrested in Nelspruit by the Secunda based Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, in less than 12 hours after the incident,' said Nkosi. The rest of the alleged cop killers are Mthobisi Nkosi (40), Aubrey Xaba (35), Skhumbuzo Skhakhane (40), Niko Mujovo (30), Gift Mdluli (34), Valencia Skhosana (36) and Phepheni Duba (37). Of the group, Phepheni Duba was granted R10 000 bail earlier this year, while Valencia Nkosi was denied bail. The rest abandoned their bail applications. 'All ten suspects are expected to appear before the same court, Ermelo District Court, on 14 August 2025,' said Nkosi. The Hawks expressed that they were pleased that the court has decided to keep the accused behind bars for at least another month. The Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Nico Gerber, said he was satisfied with the investigation's progress.
