National Food Security Act: Centre asks Punjab to weed out 11 lakh 'suspicious' beneficiaries
CHANDIGARH: The Centre has asked the Punjab Government to verify the antecedents of 11 lakh 'suspicious' beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and weed them out by September 30. But, as the paddy procurement season is set to start and the state food and civil supplies department officials will be busy, sources said that the state would seek six months time for the verification and weeding out process. Besides, the government will seek details of the database from the Centre before the verification starts. Under NFSA, there are reportedly eight crore 'suspicious' beneficiaries across the country of which 11 lakh are in Punjab. They were identified from the database of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Central Board of Direct Taxes, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, sources said. The Centre recently shared the data with the state government. It is learnt that these beneficiaries are either income tax payers, directors in companies, own more than five acres of land or a four-wheeler. So, these beneficiaries cannot be considered in the economically ba category, the union government pointed out. The NFSA is a landmark law that aims to provide subsidized food grains to a large portion of the population. Sources in the state food and civil supplies department said that Punjab has 40.50 lakh ration card holders covering a population of 1.53 crore people under NFSA. The beneficiaries are provided 5 kg of wheat per person in the family, every month at a nominal cost of Rs 2 per kg. A total of 32,500 metric tonnes of wheat is being distributed to the people under the scheme, each month.

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, the Opposition INDIA bloc's nominee for the post of Vice President, filed his nomination papers here on Thursday, saying his candidature is a commitment to the values of the Constitution and the strength of India's democracy. 'Today, I had the honour of filing my nomination papers for the office of the Vice President of India as a joint candidate of the Opposition parties. I did so with a deep sense of humility, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in our Constitution,' Justice Reddy (retd) said in a statement after filing his papers. Reflecting on his career, he said: "My life in public service as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, as a student of law, and as a citizen rooted in the democratic traditions of this Republic has taught me that the true strength of India lies in the dignity of every individual, the protection of constitutional morality, and the unity in our diversity." He said that the contest is about more than individuals. "This election is not merely about one person. It is about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders -- an India where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected, and where institutions serve the people with independence and fairness," he said. Calling the Vice President's role as Rajya Sabha Chairperson a custodian of parliamentary traditions, Reddy pledged: "If elected, I will discharge that role with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum." Expressing gratitude to opposition parties and citizens alike, he added: "I am deeply grateful to the leaders of the Opposition parties for reposing their trust in me, and to the countless citizens who continue to inspire this collective struggle for justice, equality, and harmony. Justice Reddy's (retd) nomination was filed in the presence of senior Opposition leaders, including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar, and DMK leaders, among others. As many as 80 MPs from different parties have signed his nomination papers. Justice Reddy (retd) will face off against NDA's C.P. Radhakrishnan, the incumbent Governor of Maharashtra and a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu. The election is scheduled for September 9.

Kapil Sibal questions motive behind bills targeting arrested leaders
Former Union minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday objected to three contentious bills proposing that a minister, chief minister, or the Prime Minister can lose their position within a month if they are arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days over an offence carrying a jail term of five years or more, saying the intent is to target the Opposition. Former Union minister Kapil Sibal. (X) Sibal argued that such bills cannot be passed as the government lacks the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments needed for the purpose. He said no such cases had been filed against those in the Union government. Sibal said that Opposition leaders have been incarcerated for months merely based on first information reports (FIRs). 'I want to ask the Union home minister [Amit Shah], was any FIR filed against anyone from the Union government?' said Sibal, a Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has since 2014 introduced laws eroding human rights. 'Such laws cause termite infestation to the Constitution, and destroy the well-built structure. BJP aims to destroy democracy.' He referred to the special intensive revision of the electoral roll in poll-bound Bihar and said tens of thousands of names were removed, without adding any. Sibal said the way enumeration forms were being uploaded without any document is also equal to termite infestation in the voters' list. Shah on Wednesday introduced three contentious bills amid Opposition protests and sloganeering.
