Kannur: Amid the controversy, astrologer Madhava Poduval clarified that CPM state secretary M V Govindan visited his house to inquire about his health after he underwent a surgery.
"Govindan along with his family visited me. He did not discuss anything about astrology during the visit. He just had tea with us. Somebody took some photos. These photographs are now being circulated on social media. Don't mix the personal relationship with astrology," said Poduval
He said that he was invited to state govt's Nava Kerala Sadas. "I had food with the chief minister. I attended the programme only due to personal connection. It is unbearable for me if anyone says that Govindan master checked his astrology," he added.
He said that many leaders belonging to various parties had also visited him during the rest period after the surgery. "Even (Union home minister) Amit Shah had visited me," he said. tnn

Centre Directs States, Union Territories To Audit And Repair Unsafe School Buildings

To ensure the safety of children and all school stakeholders, the Central government has directed all states and Union Territories to conduct an immediate assessment of all government, government-aided, and private school buildings. The exercise will focus on identifying unused or dilapidated structures through safety audits in line with national guidelines. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed the Lok Sabha on Monday that, as per the August 7 directive, authorities have been instructed to demolish or repair unsafe structures and ensure they are not used until certified as safe by competent engineers. Responding to a question from MP Alok Kumar Suman, Mr Pradhan said that states have been advised to make temporary arrangements for the continuation of classes where demolition or major repairs are required. The freed-up spaces may be repurposed for activities such as playgrounds, nutrition gardens, or skill-based training for students. The government has issued the following key directions to states and UTs: Urgent Identification: Conduct immediate assessment of all school buildings, with a focus on identifying dilapidated or unused structures through safety audits as per national guidelines. Demolition/Repair: Unsafe buildings or parts thereof must be promptly repaired, retrofitted, or demolished, if required. Such structures must not be used for classes under any circumstances until certified safe by competent authorities. Utilisation of Cleared Spaces: Demolished areas may be developed for playgrounds, Poshan Vatikas, vocational training, or other school activities. Temporary Arrangements: Where major repairs or demolitions are underway, temporary safe premises should be arranged to ensure continuity of education. Regular Monitoring & Reporting: District Education Officers and local authorities must monitor the progress of repairs or demolitions and submit monthly reports to the State Department and the concerned disaster management authorities (SDMA/DDMA). Compliance Certificate: Fresh use or occupancy of repaired or newly constructed school buildings will only be allowed after obtaining safety/structural fitness certification from qualified engineers, as per guidelines. The ministry has called for urgent intervention to ensure strict compliance, warning that non-adherence may attract action under relevant provisions.

Telangana urges Centre to remove GST on handloom products

Hyderabad: The State Government has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the removal of the 5% GST on handloom products to save weavers from the tax burden. In a letter to the Prime Minister and Union Minister for Handicrafts and Handlooms Giriraj Singh, state Textiles Minister T Nageshwara Rao said that the handloom sector was facing serious problems due to the 5% GST imposed by the Centre. He noted that the handloom sector provides significant employment, with 23,046 handloom workers and 34,569 other workers in Telangana alone. Rao highlighted that products from Pochampally, Gadwal, Narayanpet, Siddipet, Warangal, and Karimnagar have been recognised across the country and are also registered under Geographical Indication. Rao expressed concern that due to rising raw material prices and competition from the low-cost powerloom and mill sectors, weavers are facing financial difficulties and a lack of market demand. He said that the imposition of the 5% GST would further increase the prices of handloom products and reduce consumption, which would badly affect the livelihoods of the workers. Weavers who are losing money due to GST are being forced to leave their traditional profession and migrate to other places for livelihoods. The minister also said that handloom cooperative societies, associations, and workers have protested against the GST burden. He appealed to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister to take immediate measures to exempt handloom products from the GST burden and protect the interests of the handloom workers.
