Penang Cracks Down on Durian Fraud in Balik Pulau
State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said yesterday that his office had collaborated with police, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Service (MAQIS) to set up roadblocks to detain agricultural products that do not comply with regulations.
'This operation is being carried out due to the issue of durians from outside Penang being brought into the state by unscrupulous traders to sell the fruit under the Balik Pulau durian brand. This issue was raised during the last State Assembly session.
'This restriction was also imposed to inspect vegetables and fruits to ensure they comply with the GPL (Grading, Packaging and Labelling) 2008 Regulations under FAMA ACT 141. Yesterday itself, three violation notices related to GPL were issued,' he said in a statement today.
The GPL 2008 Regulations require that agricultural products must be graded, packaged and labelled before being marketed.
The GPLs issued yesterday were the first of such imposed on wholesalers, who will face a maximum fine of up to RM25,000.
Fahmi said the roadblock carried out from 8 pm to 11.30 pm yesterday was also the first of its kind held in Penang and will be implemented again at different locations in the future, to reinforce the state's commitment in protecting local farmers and consumers.
Balik Pulau is famed for its many durian orchards, which produce the finest of varieties, such as Black Thorn, Red Prawn, Tupai King and Musang King.

Doctor's family arrested in Kota Bharu with 35kg cannabis seized

Kelantan Police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat confirmed the arrests of the 24 and 34-year-old stepbrothers and their 46-year-old mother. The raid uncovered six boxes of compressed cannabis blocks and two additional bags, totalling 35kg with an estimated value of RM299,590. A Glock pistol with 16 bullets and a casing, worth RM5,000, was also seized during the operation. Four vehicles, including a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz, valued at RM116,000, were confiscated, bringing total seizures to RM420,000. The syndicate is believed to have operated since 2023, using the house as a storage hub before distributing drugs via courier services. The seized drugs could potentially supply around 35,000 addicts, according to police estimates. Both men tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine, while their mother tested negative for drugs. All suspects have been remanded for seven days starting August 6 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In a separate case, a Thai couple was arrested in Pengkalan Kubor with a revolver, 30 bullets, and a casing on July 25. Sejati MADANI project boosts Gua Musang economy with cucumber farming
GUA MUSANG: The government has allocated RM100,000 under the 'Program Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI' (SejaTi MADANI) to assist the Kampung Batu Papan community in increasing their income through a hanging fertigation cucumber cultivation project. Kampung Batu Papan Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JPKKP) Chairman, Mohd Iskandar Abu Bakar, said the project, which began last August, is now in its third season and has sold over 15 tonnes of cucumbers. He said RM80,000 of the allocation was utilised for the fertigation project, including land rental, equipment purchase, and working capital, while the remaining RM20,000 was allocated for a recycling project in the village. 'This fertigation planting only takes 45 days for each season before the produce can be harvested. The period begins with sowing seeds in 2,000 polybags until the cucumbers mature and are ready for the market,' he told reporters in Kampung Batu Papan today. Meanwhile, Kampung Batu Papan Cucumber Fertigation Project Manager Muhammad Farid Abdul Hadi, 37, said the harvest is sold to wholesalers and at three supermarkets in Gua Musang, Kuala Lipis, and Raub, Pahang, at RM1.50 per kilogram. 'The third season began on June 16 and is now in its third week of harvesting and sales. So far, about 4,000 kilograms of cucumbers have been harvested, and we expect yields to exceed 7,000 kilograms for this season,' he said. Resident Junainah Saeroni, 45, said the SejaTi MADANI initiative has provided job opportunities and additional income for residents. 'Every day at 5 pm, I, along with three friends, go to the farm to collect the produce and pack the cucumbers for sale.
