AI: Where demand for courses is high, but supply of teachers, poor

In the past three years, the intake in Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses has almost doubled in Tamil Nadu. It is expected to be at its highest this year. Looking at only the AI and Data Science course at the undergraduate level, the intake has gone up from 7,049 in 2022-23 to 15,702 in 2024-25.
The number of courses on AI has grown proportionately. According to estimates, there are 800 B.Tech. courses on AI offered by institutions across India, said Balaraman Ravindran, head, Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. However, there aren't enough faculty members with a qualified AI background to teach these courses. Besides, Computer Science, which provides the foundational tools for AI, does not form the core component of the emerging field since AI requires heavy reliance on mathematical concepts and principles to develop algorithms, he said.
It is, therefore, pertinent that faculty members teaching AI have to be from an AI background or should equip themselves through Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs).
Subalalitha C.N., professor, Department of Computing Technologies, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), concurred with this view. SRMIST offers 10 different AI courses, and finding faculty members has been a challenge. 'Certifications and FDPs are the ways through which the faculty members are equipping themselves, especially since more students are opting for AI courses,' she said.
There is also a move towards integrating AI with other core engineering subjects. Such multidisciplinary approach, she said, has also attracted funding from institutions. 'AI is full of maths. All algorithms have core mathematics in their background. Hence, the integration is easy,' she said. Also, the requirements of different professionals working on AI — researchers, faculty members, or developers — are different. Those developing applications may not require heavy reliance on mathematics, but those developing language models would require it. 'They would align according to their priority or preference,' she added.
The dearth of AI teachers is a matter of concern. Experts say collaboration with industry could bridge the gap to some extent, but there should be a road map for faculty development. Besides the training programmes for the faculty members, efforts are needed to attract talented youngsters proficient in AI to academics.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad's Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) has created artificial intelligence-based software to operate driverless buses within its campus. The system is being used to transport students and faculty members between various locations inside the institute. According to TiHAN officials, the autonomous vehicle currently operates only within campus limits and not on public roads. Since its deployment, the bus has transported more than 10,000 passengers. Around 90 per cent of users have provided positive feedback, the team said. The technology relies on an array of sensors and can be adapted to different types of vehicles, ranging from electric to internal combustion engine models. The service has drawn interest from other educational institutions and the Telangana state government, which are exploring potential applications. Developers noted that the technology may be suitable for deployment at airports, large educational campuses, or industrial sites, where traffic conditions are relatively predictable. In an effort to adapt the system for Indian road conditions, TiHAN has undertaken extensive data collection. This includes trials with a specially equipped sport utility vehicle (SUV) travelling from Hyderabad to Jammu. The project, called 'Safari', covered approximately 4,000 kilometres in one direction, with the return trip bringing the total to about 8,000 kilometres. During the journey, the team passed through nearly 35 cities, gathering information on different road types, traffic patterns, and environmental conditions. The collected data is being used to train and fine-tune the autonomous navigation algorithms, with the aim of improving performance in diverse weather and traffic situations. TiHAN engineers stated that the system has been tested successfully in controlled environments, but further evaluation in uncontrolled, real-world conditions is necessary before any broader commercial roll-out can be considered. Officials involved in the project also highlighted the potential safety benefits of autonomous technology, particularly in reducing road accidents and fatalities. However, they emphasised that rigorous trials and regulatory approvals will be required before the technology can be introduced for general use beyond controlled premises.

IIT-I's AI system to forecast air quality in Indian cities

Indore: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has developed AeroVision , a weather forecast system designed to predict air quality for the next six days in Indian cities and towns. By analysing 12 years of hourly air quality data alongside weather and atmospheric information, the system forecasts levels of six key pollutants-PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO₂, NO₂, and O₃-with accuracy consistently above 95%. Developed by Prof. Manish Kumar Goyal and his research team, including Kuldeep Singh Rautela from the Department of Civil Engineering, AeroVision utilises advanced artificial intelligence technologies such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU). The system also collects weather data including temperature, rainfall, wind speed, air pressure, and humidity, as well as atmospheric conditions like the vertical dispersion of pollution and hours of sunshine. Professor Suhas Joshi, director of IIT Indore said, "AeroVision is a step towards empowering citizens with the ability to foresee and mitigate the health impacts of air pollution. By providing reliable, location-specific forecasts, it aligns with our vision of using science and technology for societal well-being and sustainable living." The data is gathered hourly from a 25-kilometre grid across various regions. Professor Goyal added, "This system converts complex pollution data into a simple, colour-coded Air Quality Index (AQI) following Indian standards, along with health warnings and activity recommendations. It enables individuals, communities, and policymakers to plan outdoor activities, take preventive health measures, and respond to pollution events in advance." The AQI operates similarly to a traffic light system: Green (0-50) indicates good air quality, Yellow (51-100) is moderate but requires caution for sensitive individuals, Orange (101-200) is unhealthy for sensitive groups, Red (201-300) is unhealthy for everyone, and Purple (301+) is very unhealthy, advising avoidance of outdoor activities.
