Charges laid in connection to fatal officer-involved shooting in Deschambault Lake

Two people have been charged in connection with an incident in Deschambault Lake, Sask. that led to a fatal officer-involved shooting on Friday. According to an update sent by Saskatchewan RCMP on Saturday afternoon, the incident happened around 8:41 a.m., on Aug. 8, after two Deschambault Lake RCMP officers encountered five individuals in a wooded area near the community. 'During the course of the encounter, a confrontation occurred between the officers and one of the five people, an adult male from Deschambault Lake. The two responding police officers discharged their firearms and the adult male was struck,' RCMP said in the release. RCMP say officers provided initial medical assistance to the man, but he died at the scene. His family has been notified. No police officers were physically injured. Officers then located a gun and several replica firearms, which were seized at the scene, and arrested four other people. Two were released without charges. Earl Ballantyne, 31, from Pelican Narrows has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon. Ballantyne was also arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a separate Deschambault Lake RCMP investigation. Sherri Custer, 20, from Deschambault Lake has been charged with breach of an undertaking related to the same investigation. Police say both suspects will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court via CCTV on Monday. RCMP say they notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Saskatchewan RCMP's Prince Albert, North Battleford and Saskatoon Provincial General Investigation Sections are investigating the initial call for service received by Deschambault Lake RCMP. According to RCMP, there will continue to be an increased police presence in Deschambault Lake in relation to these ongoing investigations. RCMP say they cannot provide any additional information at this time due to the ongoing SIRT investigation.
