In the vast network of Indian Railways, where thousands of trains run every day, there is one special train that stands apart, the Accident Relief Medical Train, or ARMT. Unlike other trains, the ARMT doesn't carry passengers or goods. Its purpose is far greater: to save lives. Whenever this train is on the track, no matter which other train is coming, it must stop and give way to the ARMT.
This unique train plays a very important role during emergencies. Whenever a train accident happens anywhere in India, the Accident Relief Medical Train rushes to the spot as quickly as possible. It is fully equipped with modern medical tools and facilities. Onboard, there are doctors and paramedical staff ready to provide immediate treatment to the injured.
Where are these ARMT trains kept?
You might wonder — where is this train kept? The Indian Railways parks these special trains at important railway yards and stations across the country. The moment there's an accident, the ARMT is dispatched quickly. Other trains are made to halt so that the Accident Relief Medical Train can reach the accident site without any delay.
What's inside the ARMT?
Each ARMT is equipped with:
Medical beds and stretchers
Oxygen cylinders
First-aid kits and medicines
Minor operation equipment
Space for doctors to treat patients on-site
Faster rescue with SPART
To improve rescue operations even more, Indian Railways has also introduced Self-Propelled Accident Relief Trains (SPART). These trains can run at a speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Every Accident Relief Train and Medical Van has a pre-decided route, inspection plan, and response time to ensure they work efficiently during emergencies.
Apart from this, the Indian Railways also has about 90 breakdown cranes of different capacities. These cranes help lift damaged coaches and assist in quick recovery after accidents.
The Accident Relief Medical Train is truly a silent hero, working behind the scenes to save lives during some of the most critical moments on India's railway network.

‘All passenger-carrying mainline coaches equipped with bio-toilets'
New Delhi: All mainline coaches carrying passengers are equipped with bio-toilets that have prevented corrosion of rail fittings caused by human waste, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. In a written reply to questions on the installation of bio-toilets in trains, he said the Indian Railways has adopted a zero-discharge bio-toilet system for its coaches to eliminate direct discharge of human waste onto railway tracks and to improve hygiene and cleanliness. 'The work has been taken up in mission mode by the Indian Railways,' the minister said. 'At present, all passenger-carrying mainline coaches equipped with toilets have been provisioned with bio-toilets. This has also prevented corrosion of rail fittings due to human waste.' Drawing a comparison between 2004-2014 and 2014-2025, Vaishnaw stated that while only 9,587 coaches were provisioned with bio-toilets between 2004 and 2014, as many as 3,33,191 (more than 34 times) coaches have been equipped with such facilities between 2014 and 2025. 'In order to ensure proper functionality of bio-toilets, an awareness campaign is launched during the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' every year to sensitise all passengers about the cleanliness of coaches and toilets,' the minister said. He also listed several actions taken to generate awareness among passengers about the functionality and cleaning of bio-toilets to prevent clogging due to non-biodegradable waste. According to Vaishnaw, full-scale deploym ent of bio-toilets in coaches has resulted in a paradigm shift in the level of cleanliness of railway tracks and especially at stations where the foul smell and sight of human waste were not being felt or seen any more.

Railways rationalises fares, enhances medical facilities to improve passenger services: Ashwini Vaishnaw
The Indian Railways is moving towards a more efficient, safe, and socially inclusive system, Union Minister for Railways, IT, and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha, in response to questions raised by Eluru MP P. Mahesh Kumar, on Wednesday. Highlighting recent fare adjustments, the Minister explained that, after a five-year gap, the Railways has implemented minimal rationalisation of ticket charges from July 1, 2025. The average increase across sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, and general classes ranges between 0.5 to 2 paisa per kilometre. No fare hike was made for journeys under 500 km in the general class, and suburban fares and Monthly Season Tickets (MST) remain unchanged. The Minister noted that Indian Railways continues to offer significant subsidies—Rs.60,466 crore in FY 2023–24, amounting to nearly 45% of total passenger service costs. Concessions remain for persons with disabilities, patients, and students. The additional revenue generated is being directed towards service improvement, including safety, punctuality, and station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Services like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains, along with digital platforms such as Rail Madad and UTS Mobile App, are being expanded for better commuter access. Responding to a separate question from the same MP regarding emergency medical services, the Minister informed that medical boxes equipped with life-saving equipment and oxygen are now available at stations and onboard trains, following Supreme Court directives and AIIMS recommendations. Frontline railway staff, including ticket examiners and station masters, are receiving regular first-aid training, and emergency contact details of nearby medical facilities are displayed at stations. Ambulance services are being coordinated with state governments and private providers to ensure prompt medical response. These efforts, the Minister said, reaffirm Indian Railways' commitment to passenger welfare and safety.
