School timings revised in heat-affected areas of Himachal amid soaring temperatures

Hamirpur , The Himachal Pradesh Education Department on Friday revised school timings in hear-affected areas of the state, including Hamirpur, Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh area of Solan and Paonta Sahib area of Sirmaur district officials said. According to a notification issued by the Director of Education, the decision was taken due to the rising temperatures and difficulties faced by students due to the harsh weather conditions. The order states that schools will now function from 7.30 am to 1 pm, instead of the earlier 9 am to 3.30 pm schedule. It also directed school authorities to provide two additional drinking water breaks to ensure students remain hydrated. Deputy Directors in the respective districts have been asked to inform the Directorate about the implementation of the revised timetable. The District Magistrate of Hamirpur, Amarjeet Singh, also issued orders on Friday revising the school hours for both government and private schools. The directive said the senior secondary schools in Hamirpur district will operate from 8 am to 2 pm, while primary schools will run from 8 am to 1 pm. The move came after several parents in Hamirpur appealed to the district administration to revise school timings as temperatures in the plains of the state have soared close to 40 degrees Celsius. Parents had raised concerns about the risk of heatstroke, especially for younger children. They had suggested school timings be shifted to 7 am–12 pm or 7.30 am–12.30 pm. In Una district, summer vacations have been extended till June 30. In Hamirpur, the first part of the vacation ended on June 8, and the second part is scheduled to begin from July 13. Parents said students and teachers are struggling with the heat, and pre-primary students are the worst affected, with incidents of dizziness and illness being reported from schools.

Heatwave to continue in Himachal for three more days, relief likely from June 16: IMD

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 13 (ANI): Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting above-normal temperatures in several districts. The department said on Thursday that the plains are likely to experience hot and dry winds, while mid- and higher hills will also witness elevated temperatures. According to Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the IMD centre in Shimla, daytime temperatures in the state's plains are currently between 34C and 40C, which is 4-5 degrees Celsius above normal. 'Temperatures in the mid-hill regions are between 28C and 34C, while higher hill areas are recording 24C to 32C -- about 3-4C above the seasonal average,' Katiyar told ANI. The official said that Una, Kangra, and Kullu districts have been experiencing heatwave conditions for the past four to five days, and this situation is expected to continue until June 15. 'Heatwave conditions will persist in these districts for the next two days. A significant drop in maximum temperatures is likely from June 16 onwards, which will provide some respite from the prevailing heat,' Katiyar added. While heatwave alerts are currently in effect only for Una, Kangra and Kullu, other districts including Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Hamirpur and Bilaspur will continue to experience hot and humid weather. 'These areas are not under heatwave alert, but temperatures will remain above normal, leading to discomfort,' the IMD official said. The IMD said light rainfall and thunderstorm activity may be observed in Sirmaur, Kullu and Mandi districts on June 13, 14 and 15. 'There is a possibility of isolated hailstorms in Mandi and Kullu during this period, accompanied by gusty winds,' Katiyar said. A Western Disturbance is likely to affect Himachal Pradesh from the night of June 16, which may lead to a shift in weather patterns across the state. 'Under the influence of this system, light to moderate rain and thunderstorm activity is expected in mid and low hill areas from June 16 night onwards. This spell is likely to continue intermittently till June 20 or 21,' he added. The southwest monsoon has reached parts of central India, and conditions are becoming favourable for its further advancement. Katihar said the normal date for monsoon onset in Himachal Pradesh is June 25, and this year it is expected to arrive on time or possibly one to two days earlier. 'We are continuously monitoring monsoon progression. A formal forecast for monsoon arrival in Himachal will be issued four to five days in advance,' he said. (ANI)

Rainfall to revive in Arunachal after week of hot, dry conditions: Met dept

Itanagar, After a week of hot and dry conditions, Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive a much-needed spell of rainfall across the state till June 19, the meteorological office here said on Friday. Weather activity is expected to intensify significantly from June 16 onwards, bringing scattered to widespread rain and thunderstorms to several districts, the State Disaster Management Department said in a statement. According to district-wise forecast, Tawang, Kurung Kumey, West Kameng, Papumpare, Namsai, Changlang, and Longding are likely to witness frequent and widespread showers on some days. Meanwhile, East and West Kameng, Kra Daadi, Kamle, and Pakke Kessang — regions that began the week with minimal or no rain — are expected to experience a marked increase in rainfall. Rainfall is also likely to pick up in Upper and Lower Subansiri, Siang, and West Siang districts, the statement added. The eastern and central belts, including Upper Siang, Dibang Valley, Lohit, and Anjaw, will particularly see a rise in rainfall between June 17 and 19. Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert to the risk of thunderstorms and lightning, it added. From June 1 to 11, the state recorded 81.7 mm of rainfall, 39 per cent below the long period average of 134.7 mm. The week between June 5 and 11 was even drier, with just 11.2 mm of rainfall, a staggering 88 per cent shortfall from the normal weekly average of 94.5 mm. While rainfall from June 13 to 19 is still expected to remain below normal at 53.7 mm, the situation is projected to improve significantly in the subsequent week. Between June 20 and 26, rainfall is expected to exceed the average, reaching approximately 130 mm compared to the normal 106.5 mm, it said. Temperature patterns have reflected the dry weather. Over the past week, maximum temperatures were above normal in several parts of the state. On June 12, the maximum temperature in Itanagar touched 39.7 degrees Celsius, 7.8 degrees above normal, while Pasighat recorded 38.6 degrees, 7.6 degrees above average. These unusually high readings are largely attributed to weak monsoonal activity, dry continental easterly/northeasterly winds, and clear skies that allowed higher solar insulation, the statement said. The forecast suggests that daytime temperatures may continue to rise 2–3 degrees Celsius above normal in many areas over the next 24 hours, resulting in hot and humid conditions, especially across the plains. However, maximum temperatures are likely to return to near-normal levels as the rain sets in. Minimum temperatures will remain normal to slightly above normal through the forecast period.
