Lebanese Forces reject sectarian accusations, reaffirm commitment to national unity

LBCI21-07-2025
In a statement released on Monday, the Lebanese Forces' media office emphasized that the party's stance toward all Lebanese sects is well-known and clear, based on 'full respect and equal citizenship,' reflecting its commitment to the Lebanese idea and its defense of it.
'This conviction is reflected in two directions,' the statement read. 'First, in a national discourse that transcends all sects; and second, in the membership of citizens from all sects—particularly the Sunni community—within the Lebanese Forces, in addition to the strong relationships the party maintains with Sunni, Druze, and Shiite leaders, except for those who are not only in ideological opposition to the LF, but to the very concept of Lebanon.'
The party expressed regret over what it called 'malicious attempts' by some parties to sow division and constantly target the LF, blaming it for irresponsible statements 'that do not reflect the party's values, principles, or rhetoric, even if such statements come from individuals close to the LF.'
It concluded by affirming that 'the only official representatives of the Lebanese Forces are its president, executive body, parliamentary bloc, media office, and statements issued by the party's authorized institutions. Any other statements, regardless of the speaker's proximity to the party, do not represent the LF.'

US reportedly dissatisfied with Lebanon's response to Barrack paper

by Naharnet Newsdesk 29 July 2025, 21:08 Cabinet will hold a session next Tuesday to discuss the state's monopoly on arms, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's office said. The ministers will also discuss the November ceasefire and Israel's violations, Salam's office said. Local al-Jadeed TV channel said that the session will be held after efforts led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and ministers of the Lebanese Forces and the Progressive Socialist Party and that the session will only discuss the state's monopoly on arms based on the ministerial statement but no executive decisions will be taken. The TV network said it had learned from a prominent diplomatic source that Salam has contacted the U.S. to prevent a negative riposte to the Lebanese response to U.S. envoy Tom Barrack's paper. The source revealed to al-Jadeed that Salam had received unofficial signals from the U.S., explicitly stated in Barrack's tweets, indicating that the recent Lebanese response was not commensurate with the American demands. According to al-Jadeed, the American stance came after a meeting between Barrack and Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer last Thursday in Paris. Barrack received a negative Israeli response that was transmitted to Lebanon through indirect channels. Arab diplomatic sources meanwhile told al-Jadeed that there will be no future investments in Lebanon unless it commits to implementing international demands.

Leaflets dropped by Israeli helicopter during funeral of Amal official

SOUTH LEBANON — An Israeli helicopter dropped leaflets during the funeral of a local official from the Amal movement held Sunday in the border town of Mais el-Jabal (Marjayoun). The funeral for the deceased, Mohammad Zeib Hamdan, who died of natural causes, took place in the presence of several other figures from the Shiite movement, including Hassan Kabalan, a member of Amal's political bureau, MP Achraf Beydoun, and prominent religious figures. During the ceremony, which was also attended by local villagers, an Israeli helicopter dropped pieces of paper resembling receipts and bank transfers from several years ago, bearing various names, according to our correspondent. The Lebanese security forces have opened an investigation to clarify the nature and origin of these documents. Meanwhile, on other leaflets dropped Sunday in Kfar Kila (Marjayoun), an image shows an excavator working among the rubble of a destroyed building, with a yellow Hezbollah flag visible and a geographic location marked. "This tractor works for Hezbollah, which continues to threaten and endanger the region. There is no economic benefit to be gained from shady dealings with Hezbollah," the document reads. Additionally, the Israeli army claimed that the two Hezbollah fighters killed Saturday night in an airstrike on the village of Debaal (Sour) were members of the al-Radwan force, the pro-Iranian militia's elite unit. "The air force attacked the Dbaal area in southern Lebanon and killed Mohammad Haidar Abboud, operations officer of the al-Radwan force battalion, as well as an artillery member (Ali el-Ali, editor's note)," it said in a statement.

Report: Salam seeks prior agreement from Shiite Duo on cabinet session tackling Hezbollah arms

by Naharnet Newsdesk 29 July 2025, 16:55 French President Emmanuel Macron advised PM Nawaf Salam in their latest meeting to hold a cabinet session to issue a resolution on monopolizing arms in the hands of the state, political sources said. 'Delaying the decision on arms monopoly will subject the country to further threats through the expansion of Israel's violations and attacks, although official sides deny that the government has received international warnings about Israel's intention to wage a new war,' the sources told Asharq al-Awsat newspaper. 'This prompted Salam, after consulting with President Joseph Aoun, to carry out a broad series of contacts to explore the government parties' readiness to secure political rather than numerical quorum for holding a cabinet session dedicated to taking a decision on arms monopoly,' the sources added. 'Salam and (Speaker Nabih) Berri will hold further discussions to create the right circumstances for holding a cabinet session that has consensus on arms monopoly on its agenda,' the sources said. 'Salam is avoiding to convene cabinet before he obtains prior agreement from the Shiite Duo on backing arms monopoly, because he does not want to implicate the government in a rift with Shiites,' the sources added.
