Ninth generation Pictet family member of leading the group beyond 220 years.

[GENEVA] Striving not for size but 'to be the finest, as a wealth and asset manager known for superior returns and exceptional client experience' is what drives 46-year-old Francois Pictet, managing partner of Pictet Group.
He is a ninth-generation member of a family who became associated with Pictet Group in 1841. The Geneva-headquartered organisation, which turns 220 this year, traces its roots even further back, to its founding in July 1805.
Francois Pictet followed the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather into the top echelons of the group's management. Today, Pictet Group is Switzerland's second-largest financial institution, behind UBS, and the largest privately held financial institution in Europe.
Francois Pictet sits alongside his cousin, senior partner Marc Pictet, and five other managing partners at the apex of the company's management.
The seven top partners – six men and one woman, all of whom are based in Geneva – are a close-knit group, who meet thrice a week, for several hours per session, to discuss strategies and investments.
'You cannot invite as managing partners people who want to decide everything and don't want to listen to others. This type of profile will not make it,' said Francois Pictet.

He pointed out that while Pictet Group is unique in having a long association with his wider family, having the name alone does not mean guaranteed entry into the group's top leadership.
In addition to the seven managing partners, Pictet Group also has 43 equity partners. New partners buy shares at book value; when partners exit, they sell their shares at book value, which has hopefully grown during their tenure. Partners adhere to the retirement age of 65.
To date, Pictet Group has grown organically and not done any mergers and acquisitions. Also, the group has stayed out of business lines such as commercial banking, retail banking and investment banking.
'Why would you make an acquisition unless you want to show growth to your shareholders? In finance, growth by hiring the right people is more effective,' said Francois Pictet, adding that making acquisitions can harm the corporate culture.
He likes the group's business model, which he sees as being differentiated from other financial institutions and bringing stability to the business and clients.
'Stability nowadays is in very rare supply, and I think this is a key advantage that we have,' he said.
He argued that by being conservative in how Pictet Group uses its balance sheet, space is freed up to be innovative in serving clients. 'Our usage of the balance sheet is extremely conservative, we don't play with it at all,' he said.
Personal journey
Francois Pictet, who became a managing partner in 2022, currently leads the group's technology and operations division, as well as the private wealth management's Asian and Middle East commercial efforts.
Trained in law, he said that it was 'initially not really my intention' to join the family business.
He spent over a decade working for organisations including UBS, the former Credit Suisse and US private equity firm AEA Investors before joining Pictet Group in 2015.
Asked if carrying the Pictet name within Pictet Group is a privilege or a burden, he admitted that 'with the family name comes the pressure as well'.
He described working at Pictet Group as being at 'a place where you have your name on the door and the responsibility of not undoing the work done by eight generations before you'.
Still, when the opportunity to join the group came while he was in his thirties, he said it would have been a waste not to seize it.
With Pictet Group today being considerably larger than in his father's time, Francois Pictet thinks family members who want to join now or in future should spend some years outside the group to chalk some achievements before coming on board.
'It's very important for our managing partners to have seen the world out there and also proven themselves outside the firm,' he said.
In the private wealth management business, Pictet Group serves clients with a net worth of five million Swiss francs (S$8 million) or more. Francois Pictet sees no reason to lower this threshold for the sake of acquiring a larger customer base.
He emphasised that in the private wealth management business, much time is spent on understanding clients and their worry with money. Investment solutions then come on the back of understanding client needs. He noted this is unlike 'the brokerage model, where you start the discussion by talking about products'.
'Our time horizon is not a quarter, not even 10 years. It is really generations with our clients,' he stressed.
Francois Pictet noted that amid geopolitical fragmentation, wealthy families have become more mobile, requiring all sorts of combinations of booking and servicing centres. With its stability, he observed that Singapore has been on the rise as a booking centre for the whole of Asia for several years.
Other megatrends that he sees in the private wealth management business include generational wealth transfer, the rise of Asia, the growing importance of private equity and the need to invest more in technology as well as risk and compliance.
Generational wealth transfer
Honora Ducatillon, head of family advisory at Pictet Wealth Management, said that with dynastic families, Pictet Group is seeing growing demand for help in crafting a family charter, as a framework for long-term success. Dynastic families are defined as those having a net worth of US$100 million or more.
Typically, a family charter may cover areas such as family mission, family values, code of conduct, conflict resolution, succession in ownership and management, governance bodies, access to capital, family members, employment, ownership policy and education of family members.
Ducatillon said wealthy families are evolving with trends such as longevity and the rise of the 100-year-old chief executive. Also contributing to this evolution are accelerating shifts in sociocultural values; the increase in blended families; the rise of women wealth owners, the move from top-down to collaborative governance models; and technology's role in transforming how families institutionalise wisdom across generations.
Citing a McKinsey report, she noted that some US$5.8 trillion in assets will be transferred across generations in Asia-Pacific between 2023 and 2030 by wealthy families, and that many family offices report that preparing the next generation to take on wealth responsibly is a major challenge.

[SINGAPORE] Last year, Singapore was one of the best performing markets globally with the Straits Times Index (STI) hitting record highs. How much more upside is there, and can it continue to outperform its regional peers? This year, the index has underperformed some markets such as South Korea, China and Hong Kong, but it remains one of the best performers. Many forget that the STI's outperformance follows a sustained period of underperformance. Many other markets are also at historic highs. The question may not be whether to invest or not. Instead, how much of our portfolio should be invested in our home market? Why invest in our home market It is human nature to favour something that is familiar to us. This is known as mere exposure bias. It describes our tendency to develop preferences for or dislike things simply because we are familiar with them. It is also known as familiarity bias. In the context of financial markets, this is expressed in the form of home or home-country bias, which is the tendency to invest the majority of assets into domestic equities, despite evidence that diversification can produce a more optimal portfolio. To be sure, there may be other barriers to investing overseas, such as regulations, costs or foreign exchange risks. However, the effect differs because some markets are bigger and have broader representation than others. There is only one market that is big enough with globally competitive companies, is diversified across geography, sector and size, and allows for a meaningful and consistent outperformance over time. That is the US stock market. Whether it is the S&P 500 index or the broader Russell indexes, the US represents more than half of the global stock market capitalisation, and comprises 64 per cent of MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI). The next largest is Japan whose share is less than 5 per cent. This attests to the big gap the US has over every other market in the world, and shows how exceptional and unique the US market is. It is also why in the past two decades, investment flows into the US as a form of diversification for local non-US investors have risen. The average annual foreign capital inflow into the US stock markets has increased from an average US$50 billion in the 1970s to more than US$500 billion in recent years. This, in turn, has resulted in better returns for these investors. Home bias investing in Singapore The benchmark STI is a collection of the 30 largest and most liquid companies listed on the Singapore Exchange, which comprises more than 600 listings. The STI represents a meaningful S$622 billion of market capitalisation. The Monetary Authority of Singapore recently announced its Equity Market Development Plan to revitalise and broaden the Singapore equity market, especially the mid and small-cap segment outside the STI. It has allocated S$5 billion to co-invest alongside private capital; some initial capital was awarded to Avanda, Fullerton and JP Morgan Asset Management. Separately, Amundi, the largest European asset manager, launched an STI index fund with the lowest cost of 0.15 per cent in Singapore. Both initiatives are happening in time for SG60 celebrations. As the STI touches new historic highs and interest is resurgent due to new product launches and government support, many investors wonder whether the current rally has more legs. Historically, the STI has been a perennial underperformer. Over the past 15 years, it has lagged the S&P 500, gaining 2.4 times compared to 8.7 times by the S&P 500. Of course, the real question is whether this trend will continue. Between 2002 and 2012, the STI outperformed the S&P 500 in nine out of 11 years. When home bias is positive While no other economy is comparable to the US, some regional players do set themselves apart. India offers growth and diversified sectoral exposures, and Taiwan has tech and entrepreneurial companies which generate high returns on equity through cycles. Those are two examples of economies with good equity culture that have generated better returns. They also exhibit strong home bias. Another good example of a positive home bias is Australia, with its ageing and wealthy population and its superannuation pension system. Like Australia, Singapore has among the highest GDP per capita, a large savings pool, an ageing population and a high rate of home ownership, as well as the CPF Investment Scheme. Singaporeans have the wherewithal to invest consistently into their local market too. What sets Singapore apart is that its companies have lowest dependence on the local economy and highest overseas revenue contribution, compared to the other major stock market indexes in Asia and the US. Most of Singapore companies' revenues are generated in South-east Asia; this growing diversification in its revenue source is a positive. What drives change? The world is evidently changing. There is continued noise around tariffs; concerns over US economic growth and the US Federal Reserve's interest rate policy abound. However, those are cyclical issues. The underlying current of structural changes points to a new global regime and the end of an US-led post-war international order which could reshape many things, among which is international cross-border investment flows. Countries which turn inwards may start to keep more of their capital at home. A structural change of this order and magnitude could reshape investor behaviour and patterns which could be positive for the Singapore market and the Singapore dollar over the long term. But investing in our home also goes beyond the stock market. That is, supporting the social sector is just as important as investing in the financial sector. That is why as we kick off the SG60 celebrations, the Community Chest, National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre and Endowus have teamed up to launch the Invest in our Home campaign to raise awareness and raise funds for local charities and non-profit organisations. This effort will strengthen the fabric of our society and generate greater social returns alongside financial returns. Razer to hire 150 people for new Singapore AI Center of Excellence

[SINGAPORE] Gaming company Razer is seeking to fill 150 artificial intelligence (AI)-related roles to work at its new AI Center of Excellence, it announced on Monday (Aug 4). These employees – known as AI specialists – will be hired from different disciplines such as data science, engineering and game development, Razer said in a press release. The Center of Excellence will be located within Razer's South-east Asia headquarters at one-north. But Razer is on the hunt for more than just people with technical skills. Chief strategy officer Lee Li Meng said that the 'number one fundamental thing' the company is looking for when hiring is to ensure that these applicants play video games. He noted that having experiences and opinions about the gaming industry will be beneficial in the development of Razer's products and services. He added that the company is keen to hire both fresh graduates and those with work experience. Sign Up Sign Up Why Singapore got the nod Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch event, Razer's co-founder and chief executive officer Tan Min-Liang said that one reason why Singapore was chosen as the location of its first Center of Excellence was due to the country's available pool of talent. Razer will work with AI Singapore and institutions of higher learning through initiatives such as the AI Apprenticeship programme and its industry-focused track, the company said in the press release. Singapore was also favoured as it is where one of the company's headquarters is located, said Tan. The other one is situated in Irvine, California in the US. He did not disclose the investment amount to set up the new centre. As part of a broader plan to establish interconnected AI hubs, Razer said in its release that the Singapore facility 'sets the foundation' for future centres in Europe and the US, which will expand Razer's 'global reach and collaborative potential'. Lee did not give a specific opening date or location of these future Centers of Excellence. He added that the ecosystem, government support and partners are key considerations on whether a location is suitable for opening such a centre. Beyond the gaming industry At a separate media interview, Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said that the gaming industry is a crucial driver of the broadly applicable AI technologies. She cited graphics processing units (GPUs) as an example, noting that despite being initially developed for gaming, GPUs are now used for powering AI. Another example she mentioned was the quality assurance process of video games, which is also applicable in the manufacturing industry. Video games quality assurance is the process where flaws, or 'bugs', are identified and rectified prior to the official release of the game. Teo emphasised that the opening of Centers of Excellence fits in with Singapore's national strategy, with the government keen to ensure AI can be used across different types of companies of various sizes, across many industries and sectors. 'We want them to use AI intensively, embed it into the core of their businesses,' Teo said.

Asian stock markets climbed on the opening of the new week with the hope of U.S. interest rate cuts giving investors some relief. MSCI's broad Asia-Pacific index (excluding Japan) climbed by 0.8%, rose by 0.6%, and South Korea's KOSPI. However, Japan's Nikkei index declined by 1.6% after a sharp rise in the yen's value. Chinese blue chips stayed flat and showed a little change. In Europe, the market's future looked optimistic. EUROSTOXX 50 futures climbed by 0.6% while FTSE futures gained 0.5% and DAX futures rose by 0.4%. The Euro remained steady at $1.1683 and the British Pound at $1.3282 ahead of the Bank of England's rate decision, which is expected this week. Gold was steady at $3,361 an ounce after gaining more than 2% on Friday, the previous week. Brent crude dropped 0.2% to $69.51 a barrel, while U.S. crude edged down 0.1% to $67.24.
