‘Do all you can to eliminate...': US lawmakers' message to Bilawal Bhutto-led Pakistan delegation
US lawmakers told Bilawal Bhutto-led Pakistan delegation to do all it can to eliminate 'vile' Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Congressman Brad Sherman said on Friday he met former Pakistan minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan's Ambassador Sheikh and House Foreign Affairs leadership for a "candid conversation about regional tensions following last month's India-Pakistan conflict, democracy in Pakistan, & counterterrorism in the region."
In a series of posts on X, Sherman said he "emphasised to the Pakistani delegation the importance of combatting terrorism, and in particular, the group Jaish-e-Mohammed, who murdered my constituent Daniel Pearl in 2002."
"Pearl's family continues to live in my district, and Pakistan should do all it can to eliminate this vile group and combat terrorism in the region," Sherman said.
Terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh was convicted of orchestrating the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
He added that "water rights" along the Indus River was a major point of discussion during the meeting. He said, "India should not take any adverse actions towards Pakistan to restrict the Indus" and that "China should not take any adverse actions towards India to restrict water in the region."
He said, "Within Pakistan, water flowing through Punjab and Sindh must remain accessible to the millions of Pakistanis who rely on the Indus to survive."
Sherman also said the protection of religious minorities in Pakistan remains an important issue. "Christians, Hindus, and Ahmadiyya Muslims living in Pakistan must be allowed to practice their faith and participate in the democratic system without fear of violence, persecution, discrimination, or an unequal justice system," he said.
Bhutto-led Pakistani delegation met Congressman Brad Sherman in Washington on Thursday, timing their visit to the US capital around the same time as a multi-party delegation of Indian parliamentarians led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is in Washington DC.
Bhutto met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres with his delegation as well as Security Council Ambassadors in New York.

As Pakistan fails to get into ‘expected' UNSC panels, India in talks with friends
India is working with its partners and friends on the UN Security Council to blunt Pakistan's moves, as Islamabad has been appointed to key counter-terror committees at the UNSC. Sources in New York told The Indian Express that Pakistan demanded to be the chair of the 1267 Sanctions Committee; 1540 (Non-Proliferation) Sanctions Committee; 1988 (Taliban) Committee and Chair of the 1373 Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC). Sources said the allocation of positions 'should have been undertaken by January 2025'. It is learnt that a 'lack of consensus and unreasonable demands' by Pakistan prevented a consensus being formed till June 2025. 'The Council members were not happy with this … attitude depicted by the Pakistan,' a source said. Pakistan had to be satisfied with 'only one full Chairship' — Chair of the 1988 (Taliban) Sanctions Committee [Russia and Guyana are the Vice-Chairs], sources said . The other positions are Vice-Chair of the 1373 CTC [along with France and Russia]; Sanctions Informal Working Group (IWG) [Co-Chair with Greece] and Documentation IWG [Co-chair with Denmark.] 'The… positions allocated to Pakistan is far below its… aspirations,' the source said. India also chaired the same 1988 (Taliban) Sanctions Committee during its UNSC 2021-22 term along with the Chair of the 1970 Libya Sanctions Committee. Sources said the position of Vice-Chair of 1373 CTC which Pakistan was allocated is 'not something very substantive'. 'It is… more ceremonial in nature. Pakistan… has not been able to get its way. India was the Chair of the 1373 CTC in 2022. India had earlier also, during its 2011-12 UNSC term, chaired the 1373 CTC.' For the first time in the history of the UNSC, an IWG will have two co-Chairs. This can be interpreted as a move by the Council to rein in Pakistan. Despite the Pakistani delegation's visit to the UN, the result is not something Pakistan will be happy with. This reflects Pakistan's standing and credibility in the UN, sources said. Sources said all the major terrorist attacks and networks have their origins in Pakistan. Some examples are: Sources said Pakistan's role as a state sponsor of terrorism is well known. 'Out of around 254 individuals and 89 entities designated in the 1267 Sanctions Committee (Al-Qaeda and ISIL), Pakistan has the unrivalled distinction of over 50 individuals and entities linked to it designated in the 1267 Sanctions Committee… it is Pakistan which is at unease… that more of its nationals and entities will be added to the Sanctions Committees/Regimes.' Berlin [Germany], June 8 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi has said that India's Armed Forces have given a befitting reply to those who have cast an evil eye on the country and that there will be a firm response to any terror attack. Priyanka Chaturvedi, who is a member of an all-party delegation visiting partner countries to highlight India's zero tolerance policy against terrorism, told members of the Indian diaspora in Germany that India gave a firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack through Operation Sindoor. 'Our armed forces gave a befitting reply to those who have time and again attacked our country . Our response has been mature, responsible,' she said. 'We are the land of Mahatma, we are the land of Buddha, but we are also the land of Krishna,' she added. She said the terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was targeted in Operation Sindoor. She said India was, in a way, carrying out the work of the UN, by targeting terror camps. Priyanka Chaturvedi also took a jibe at Pakistan getting a position to serve as vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations. 'Do you know what responsibility they got? They have gotten the vice-chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. This is like asking Masood Azhar and Hafeez Saeed to fight for global peace and justice. We have to call this out. BJP's Amit Malviya slams TMC's Firhad Hakim for 'vile' remarks against PM Modi over Op Sindoor
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): BJP leader Amit Malviya on Saturday hit out at Kolkata Mayor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim for making what he called a 'vile and disgraceful attack' on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Operation Sindoor. He accused Hakim of calling the PM a 'coward' and dismissing his role in the operation. In a post on X, Malviya shared a video in which Hakim could be seen allegedly stating, 'There is nothing big about the Prime Minister here... But, for fear of a bigger country, he has locked up the Armed Forces as cowards.' Malviya further accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of instructing Hakim to say such things to the Prime Minister. He noted that the rhetoric was similar to what a 'Pakistani politician' would say to belittle India and its government, and that such remarks expose the mindset of such leaders who spread hate above the national interest. 'Listen carefully to what Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim is saying -- the same man who once infamously called parts of Kolkata 'Mini Pakistan' and openly harbours dreams of turning India into an Islamic state. Now, under clear instructions from his leader, Mamata Banerjee, he has launched a vile and disgraceful attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 1. He shamelessly claimed that PM Modi had no role in giving Pakistan a befitting reply through Operation Sindoor. 2. He went a step further and labelled the Prime Minister a 'coward' for observing a ceasefire and not extending Operation Sindoor further. Frankly, this rhetoric sounds less like an Indian leader and more like a Pakistani politician trying to belittle the Indian government and its leadership. Such statements expose the mindset of those who put partisan hate above national interest. The people of India will see through this,' the BJP leader stated in the post. Meanwhile, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar further accused the Kolkata Mayor of raising questions against the Indian Army and BSF, stating that he was 'incapable' of understanding the work that PM Modi had done. 'People like Firhad Hakim, they are incapable of understanding the work that PM has done... During the UPA government, when the TMC was a part of it, it tied the hands of the army... PM Modi gave a free hand to the army, and we destroyed the terrorist sites in Pakistan... Firhad Hakim and his party always raise questions on the Indian Army and BSF,' Majumder stated. (ANI)
