NYC Mayor nominee Zohran Mamdani persuaded mother Mira Nair to turn down ‘Harry Potter', cast Kal Penn in ‘The Namesake'

The Hindua day ago

Zohran Mamdani, the Indian-origin democratic socialist set to become the Democratic candidate for New York City Mayor, has influenced the world of cinema in ways you wouldn't expect. Mamdani, the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, has played a key role in his mother's career, having even persuaded her to turn down an opportunity to direct a Harry Potter film.
At the 2018 Jaipur Literature Festival, Nair revealed that Warner Bros. had approached her to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix after seeing her 2004's Vanity Fair. Mira, at that time, was set to helm The Namesake, the film adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's bestseller of the same name. The project was personal to Mira, as she had just lost her mother-in-law to malpractice in a New York hospital.
'I was deep in that melancholy. That's what inspired me to make The Namesake, because Jhumpa had written in it of this terrible melancholy of losing a parent in a foreign country, which is exactly what I was experiencing,' Variety quoted Nair.
However, turning down a Harry Potter film wasn't easy; after all, her son, Mamdani, had learned to read from the 'Harry Potter' books. So she turned to him for guidance. 'He said to me, 'Mama, many good directors can make Harry Potter, but only you can make The Namesake.'
Mamdani's role in the making of The Namesake didn't end there. Fascinatingly, Nair has also stated that it was her son who convinced her to cast Kal Penn in the film. 'I was chasing movie stars for Gogol's role. And he (Mamdani) said, 'Mama, you have to watch Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.' I looked at the poster and thought 'how can I like this goofy guy?''
But she watched it — because Mamdani said so — and took a liking to Penn's performance in the stoner comedy. 'I then asked to see him (Penn), and then he got the part because he was the genuine article. Because he was raised in the country, and he was exactly in that sense, Gogol.' And that is how Penn, an actor who was only doing comedy roles, landed a dramatic, serious role in The Namesake.
'Zohran constantly gives me such advice. I always definitely hear him when we talk about the story I'm making, or who I'm thinking of, or who's good, or who's not,' added Nair.
Notably, according to Variety, Mamdani has also worked as a third assistant director and music supervisor in Nair's Queen of Katwe. He's also been credited for playing Bookie Student in the 2016 film, apart from performing a rap song titled '#1 Spice,' under the moniker Young Cardamom, for the film's soundtrack.

The American cop-comedy series Brooklyn Nine Nine, starring Andy Samberg, the late Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio and Chelsea Perretti, has become a cult classic over the years. And now, it is getting an adaptation in Hindi for the Indian audience. Kunal Kemmu; a still from Brooklyn Nine Nine Recent reports stated that Rishab Seth, who has directed Dhoom Dhaam and the recently released Mistry, is going to be helming the show, but seems like it's all a bit in the early stages. And now a source close to the development informs us, 'The makers do have a strong desire to bring out the Indian adaptation, but it is at a very nascent stage. Nothing is signed or confirmed as of yet and they are still looking out for a platform.' Reports also suggested that actor Kunal Kemmu has been approached to play the lead character, essayed by Andy in the original. However, that isn't the case. 'The casting of Kunal Kemmu is a complete rumour. His name has been discussed among the makers due to his impeccable comic timing, but he has not been a part of those discussions yet and nothing has been taken to him. The casting process is still a few months away,' the source shares, giving an important update on the show. 'The writers have written a pilot episode and fleshed out the characters as per Indian setting, but it's all a little early. Although, if all things go well, the show might hit the screens after a year,' the source says. Brooklyn Nine Nine follows a group of cops in the 99th precinct in Brooklyn, New York, and their everyday antics as they solve cases with a hint of humour. The show has achieved cult following over the course of its six seasons run, and is often rewatched on TV and streaming.

Joseph Kosinski shares his 'dream pitch' for F1 sequel starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise

Washington DC [US], June 27 (ANI): Joseph Kosinski has already started thinking about the sequel of Brad Pitt starrer 'F1'. He expressed his wish to cast Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in an epic 'Days of Thunder' crossover, reported Variety. "F1" director Joseph Kosinski spoke to GQ Magazine UK as quoted by Variety and said his dream for a sequel to his Brad Pitt-racing drama is to actually bring in Tom Cruise for a 'Days of Thunder' crossover. Tom Cruise played the role of a racer in the movie, which was directed by Tony Scott. Kosinski previously directed Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which earned 1.4 billion USD at the box office, and the duo are currently developing a third 'Top Gun' movie together. The director shared his dream pitch for a Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise crossover in the 'F1' sequel, reported Variety. "Well, right now, it'd be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise's] 'Days of Thunder' character, we find out that he and [Brad Pitt's] Sonny Hayes have a past. They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths. I heard about this epic go-kart battle on 'Interview With a Vampire' that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?" said Kosinski as quoted by Variety. Kosinski originally planned to bring Pitt and Cruise together on the big screen in his own version of 'Ford v Ferrari.' The actors were going to do all of their own racing in the movie, but the studio would not approve Kosinski's desired budget. James Mangold ended up directing 'Ford v Ferrari' with Christian Bale and Matt Damon instead, reported Variety. As per the outlet, Pitt and Cruise haven't starred together in a movie since 1994's horror classic 'Interview With the Vampire,' although they have remained friends. Cruiose recently showed up at the 'F1' London premiere and posed for photos with Pitt, who told E! News earlier this month that he's interested in acting with Cruise again on one condition: 'I'm not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and shit like that.' Kosinski's 'F1' has been released in theatres on June 27. (ANI)

Sardaar Ji 3 Producer ADMITS Hania Aamir 'Hit Below The Belt', Shouldn't Have Condemned Operation Sindoor

Last Updated: Sardaar Ji 3 producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu said he will not work with Pakistani actors again. Hania Aamir is currently seen in Diljit Dosanjh 's Punjabi film, Sardaar Ji 3. Her casting has caused a huge uproar in India, especially due to her comments on India's Operation Sindoor after the terror attack in Pahalgam. Her casting in Diljit Dosanjh's film has hurt Indian sentiments, and as such, the singer-actor is being subjected to serious boycott calls in India. Amid this, producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu opened up about the actress's inclusion in the film. When pointed out that Pakistani actors like Hania Aamir and Mahira Khan had strongly condemned Operation Sindoor, Gunbir told NDTV, 'I believe that they should not have made such statements. But I cannot comment more than that. But I would say that those things should not have happened, and she hit below the belt." Despite the strict tensions between India and Pakistan, Gunbir's film features several Pakistani actors besides Hania. Gunbir explained, 'Those who are actively involved in the film industry and are aware of day-to-day activities, know that this film was shot in February-March 2025 itself. We shot it in the UK. There was no such atmosphere at that time; work was going on normally between the two countries. The whole atmosphere was normal. There was no restriction from the Government of India or any other institution." 'When we came to know about this attack, we decided that we would not release the film in India, because we did not want to hurt the sentiments of our people in any way. We too were hurt by this incident. Keeping this honour in mind, we decided that the film will be released only overseas because our major investment is there," he added. In a recent chat with News18 Showsha, singer Aditya Narayan mentioned that the relations between India and Pakistan might not have been as stringent as they are now, but they have never been good. Aditya Narayan said, ' Jab iski casting hui hogi toh relations itne strained nahi the. But if you see, the relations were never good anyway. It's murky waters, but definitely, it's always India first. This is my motherland. This is my country…Make amends, that's all." Meanwhile, Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3 will be released globally on June 27. Diljit Dosanjh has been receiving boycott and ban calls from the Indian film bodies, and his future films like Border 2 are in jeopardy. First Published:
