JIT to probe Akora Khattak suicide blast

Express Tribune05-03-2025

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has decided to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the suicide attack at Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak, Nowshera district.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur stated on Wednesday that all possible measures would be taken to identify those responsible for the deadly attack and bring them to justice. A formal announcement regarding the JIT will be made in the coming days, he added.
During his visit to Darul Uloom Haqqania, Gandapur offered condolences to the family of Maulana Hamidul Haq, who was martyred in the blast. Prayers were also held for the elevation of ranks of the slain Maulana and other martyrs. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Advisor for Information and Public Relations, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif.
Gandapur also visited the mosque affected by the blast and strongly condemned the attack. He described Haq's martyrdom as an irreparable loss, emphasizing that his religious and political contributions would be remembered for a long time.
He further stated that Darul Uloom Haqqania has played a significant role in religious education. The JIT is being formed to thoroughly investigate the incident, and every possible effort will be made to identify and punish those responsible.
The official announcement regarding the JIT will be made soon. He assured that every effort would be taken to uncover the root cause of this tragic incident and ensure that those responsible do not escape justice.
The chief minister stressed that bringing the perpetrators to justice is crucial in preventing such incidents in the future. He vowed that the death of Maulana Haq would not go in vain.
"This incident will serve as a moment of national unity against terrorism," he stated. He also announced that the families of the martyrs and the injured would receive full financial assistance.
While speaking to the media, Gandapur emphasized the need for serious measures to improve the law and order situation in K-P, including the merged districts.
"If timely steps are not taken to curb terrorism, it could engulf the entire country," he warned.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by both security forces and the people of K-P in the war against terrorism, urging national unity to eliminate the menace.
"Dialogue and negotiations are the only effective means for a lasting solution to this issue," he maintained, adding that the provincial government has formed a Jirga to hold talks with neighboring Afghanistan in this regard.
However, further progress awaits approval of the Terms of Reference (TORs) from the federal government, he noted.
The chief minister said that negotiations with Afghanistan are the only viable way to end Kabul's support for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which is involved in terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

Challenging JIT under PECA: IHC dismisses PTI leader's plea

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC), Tuesday, dismissed Sheikh Waqas Akram's petition challenging the Joint Investigation Team (JIT)'s notice issued to him under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016. The JIT has summoned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader to investigate about the party's alleged social media campaign against the state institutions. The case was fixed before a single bench of Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas on Tuesday. The case was called twice, but neither Sheikh Waqas nor his counsel appeared before the Court, the judge; therefore, dismissed the petition for non-prosecution. The petition filed by PTI leader, Sheikh Waqas Akram, through Barrister Muhammad Umer Riaz challenging the JIT and the proceedings of PECA against him. The petitioner has challenged the JIT notification dated 26.07.2024 terming it illegal, unlawful, and in violation of Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, and Schedule VII of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Investigation Rules, 2018. The petitioner contended that the impugned notification is illegal and unlawful, asking to appear before JIT, constituted under Section 30 of the Act of 2016 and Schedule VII the Rules, 2018. He submitted that Section 30 of the Act of 2016 provides certain conditions for formation of JIT to investigate the offence under the Act of 2016. He contended that this offence is neither defined nor covered under the notification dated 26.07.2024. He also stated that, as per the impugned notification, the Inspector General of Police of ICT, Islamabad, is heading the JIT, which is a complete violation of Section 2 of PECA 2016. The petitioner stated that Rule 16 is very clear that a time-frame for the offence ought to be mentioned in the notification, whereas, in this notification, no such thing is mentioned. He argued that, since the agency has already been established, there was no need to formulate a JIT, which is in violation of Section 29 of the PECA Act 2016. The JIT is investigating 16 individuals, including senior PTI leaders, for their alleged involvement in negative propaganda on social media. Meanwhile, a single bench of IHC Justice Muhammad Asif issued notices to the authorities in a petition seeking quashment of an FIR registered against former JI Senator Mushtaq Ahmed and his wife Humaira Tayyaba for allegedly violating Section 144 during the Gaza protest. The bench directed all parties to submit their responses by today (Wednesday). Police detained the former senator, his wife and other demonstrators were arrested for participating in a protest held outside the Islamabad Press Club against the ongoing Israeli atrocities in Gaza, and the case was registered at Kohsar Police Station on May 30 as the protest was deemed a violation of Section 144. CM makes pitch for K-P role in talks with Kabul

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has demanded that the K-P government be made a part of peace talks with neighboring Afghanistan, warning that excluding the province would render the negotiations incomplete. Addressing a jirga in Peshawar, K-P Chief Minister Gandapur extended felicitations to the entire nation over a befitting response to Indian aggression, saying that PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, despite being unjustly imprisoned, united the entire nation against Indian hostilities—proving himself a true leader. Expressing his gratitude to Imran Khan and his supporters, Gandapur said their unwavering stance was instrumental in defending Pakistan. "Despite political differences, we have forged national unity for the sake of the country's sovereignty and integrity," he said. The chief minister also called on the federal government to avoid imposing taxes on the erstwhile FATA and PATA regions, arguing that the local population is not financially capable of bearing such burdens. "These areas have been severely affected by the war on terror and require significant investment," he emphasized. Highlighting the sacrifices of people from merged districts, the chief minister urged the federal government to fulfill all promises made to them. He demanded immediate release of compensation money for people displaced from these regions and called for an end to drone strikes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing civilian casualties. He also demanded immediate inclusion of the merged districts' share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award. "We are not asking for another province's share — we're demanding our rightful due," he said. The chief minister further urged the federal government to release all pending dues owed to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including net hydel profit and the province's full share in tobacco cess. "These are the rightful entitlements of our people," he asserted. In his address, the chief minister urged the reinstatement of the traditional jirga system to sustainably resolve disputes in the merged districts. He also demanded Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's inclusion in peace talks with neighboring Afghanistan, warning that excluding the province would render the negotiations incomplete.
