Palace boss Oliver Glasner believes Eberechi Eze has played his final game for the club
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner all-but confirmed Eberechi Eze has played his last game for the club after claiming the England attacker pulled out on the day of their 1-0 Conference League play-off victory over Fredrikstad. Glasners insisted Eze would start the Eagles' first leg against the Norwegian side at Selhurst Park – also their first foray into major European football – before Arsenal swooped in with a £60million deal. The transfer of 27-year-old, who had for a long time been linked to Tottenham, could be confirmed as early as this weekend. On Thursday morning, Glasner revealed he received a phone call from Eze, who said he was not feeling well enough to play, forcing him to bring Northern Ireland international Justin Devenny into his starting XI. 'I'm responsible for Crystal Palace and I think he won't play for us again,' said Glasner when asked to confirm whether Eze was heading to the Emirates Stadium. 'So I have to prepare the team for Nottingham (Forest, in the Premier League on Sunday) and for the second leg against Fredrikstad, and I'm planning without Eberechi.' Quizzed as to whether Eze was feeling physically or mentally unwell, the Palace boss merely replied: 'You have to ask him. Maybe in a few days (you can ask).' Glasner also shared that he has never faced a situation where a player in Eze's situation had called to say they were unavailable. 'No,' Glasner confirmed. 'And I don't want it to happen anymore.' The drama and speculation around Eze – and his absence from Palace's starting XI – overshadowed the FA Cup holders' historic major European debut, which they won 1-0 after Jean-Philippe Mateta nodded home in the 54th minute. Glasner, who blamed late business for Palace's poor start last season, did not hold back when sharing his frustration about their lack of activity in the transfer window, so far signing just Croatian defender Borna Sosa for £2million and goalkeeper Walter Benitez on a free transfer. 'I can't do anything,' said Glasner. 'I can't sign a player's contract. We have to act. We need this. This is Crystal Palace's future. It's easy to add numbers, we need to add the right players. 'The profile has been defined for months, for months. Also it's not surprising for everyone that Ebs left, because five days earlier we couldn't have done anything if he leaves (release clause). 'We knew that this chance is very high that this would happen, and honestly, I say it like it is, we missed the chance to replace him early enough. That's completely our fault, and nobody else's fault.' Speaking to Channel 5 after the victory, Palace chairman Steve Parish said: 'It is what it is. We've got to move past (it). He's been fantastic for the club. We all love him for what he's done and achieved, and we're pleased that he can go on and fulfil the other ambitions that he's got. 'The king is dead, long live the king. We have to move past it and we have to find other players to bring in that can support the rest of the team and Oliver.'

Oliver Glasner gives blunt response to Eberechi Eze's absence as he confirms Arsenal-bound star won't play for them again - and sends transfer warning to Liverpool on Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner seemingly confirmed Eberechi Eze 's departure from the club and said the Eagles must improve their squad before the transfer deadline. Eze withdrew from Palace's team ahead of their UEFA Conference League victory over Fredrikstad on Thursday after calling in sick as he closes in on a move to Arsenal. Glasner said at his pre-match press conference that Eze would start, but speculation developed throughout Thursday that something had changed - and this was confirmed when the Palace team sheet was released with the Palace boss adding: 'He said he doesn't feel well'. And, when pressed on Eze's absence again after the game, the Austrian told Channel 5: 'Ebs will not play for us anymore so it does not make sense to talk about him. It's gone.' He later told the post-match press conference: 'I have to apologise to all of you because I didn't tell the truth yesterday. 'I thought he would play... he called me and said he didn't feel well. You have to ask him (why), maybe in a few days. No (I don't think he will play for the club again).' Glasner was in a bullish mood post-match, with left back Borna Sosa and backup goalkeeper Walter Benitez the only two players to arrive at Palace this summer, despite a significant increase in their fixtures with European commitments. 'We are very late, there are 10 days to go to find the right replacements,' he continued. 'Again we could've done much better than we did. It's no criticism, it's just telling facts, this group is working so hard. 'I know we can rely on this group but it's really not the best way to start into the season. No defeat, that's all good, but I think we are below the edge.' A clearly frustrated Glasner continued to be asked what Palace need to do in the final days of the window. 'It's clear now I can't do anything,' he said. 'I can't sign the players. We have to act and we need this. This is Crystal Palace's future. 'We need to add not numbers, we need the right players. The profile is defined for months, it's not surprising Ebs left.' Glasner, who insisted Eze's late withdrawal did not impact the squad ahead of the game, also sent a warning to the club in regards to Liverpool's interest in Marc Guehi. 'I just know if Marc leaves then we cannot register anyone for Fredrikstad (second leg), so from my side he has to stay. 'You see we played Jefferson Lerma at the back today, we have no centre backs available at the moment and if Marc leaves, OK maybe I will try my boots because I was a centre back.' Palace chairman Steve Parish was also quick to pay tribute to Eze when speaking post match. He told Channel 5: 'He's been fantastic for the club and we're pleased that he's going to fulfill the ambitions that he's got. 'The King is dead, long live the King. We have to try use the money and give ourselves a stronger base.'

Gray backs Hibs to put in another away-day masterclass and keep their European dream alive in Warsaw
David Gray insists Hibernian can rise to the occasion in Warsaw next week and overturn a first-leg deficit in their UEFA Conference League play-off round tie. Josh Mulligan's 87th minute goal kept Hibs' hopes alive after Jean-Pierre Nsame's penalty and a Pawel Wszolek strike had given Legia a 2-0 half-time lead at Easter Road last night. Gray believes Mulligan's strike could yet prove to be a turning point in their bid to reach the league phase of the tournament which would be worth around £4.5million to the club. The Hibs manager also takes heart from his team's previous away performances in Europe this season which saw them draw 1-1 with Midtjylland in Denmark and beat Partizan Belgrade 2-0 in Serbia. 'It's a huge goal from Josh,' said Gray. 'It gives us belief and momentum. From what I've seen, we are still very much in this tie. 'We need to believe we can go to Poland and turn it around next Thursday. We've already shown we can produce good levels of performance away from home in Europe this season. 'No one gave us much of a chance away to Midtjylland or Partizan Belgrade but the players got positive results in both games. 'I thought the players started well tonight and went toe-to-toe with a good Legia side who reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last season. 'There is a lot of football still to be played in the tie. We are only one behind and that's something we can easily change over there. 'We created lots of chances and we need to make sure we take more of them when they come.' Hibs went behind to a controversial penalty in the 34th minute following Rocky Bushiri's handball, with the home team's coaching staff adamant there was an offside from the visitors in the run-up to the incident. Gray added: 'I don't know if they've seen it as a second phase, whatever phase, when that phase of play starts. 'I do think it is offside, I don't know if that counts in that phase, but at the same time, I've not seen it back with the lines or anything like that, so I'm not going to sit and moan about decisions that I can't affect now. 'I say that all the time, one thing I don't do is moan about refereeing decisions, so I try and worry about things I can affect, which is my team's performance. 'But again, I'll just reiterate to the players, as I've just done, there's a lot to be positive about. 'I'll never accept losing games of football, but it's slightly different over two legs because it is only half-time in the tie. 'And listen, it's all to play for going over there, because there is only one goal in it. We've got the momentum now after back of that goal.' Legia Warsaw head coach Edward Iordanescu was unsurprisingly satisfied with an outcome which makes his team heavy favourites to progress next week. 'I have to congratulate my players on a very important result,' said Iordanescu. 'I'm very happy with the performance. But I'm also a little bit frustrated we missed chances to make it 3-0 and it finished 2-1. 'It is very difficult to play here against a physical and intense team who are well supported from the stands. Now we have to fight again in the home game. With the support of our fans, I'm confident we will be able to qualify.'
