Penang cops seize over 112kg of drugs, arrest four
GEORGE TOWN: The reign of a drug syndicate came to an end after four months when police seized 112.1kg of cannabis and cannabis buds worth RM3.72mil.
Four men, aged between 31 and 39, including a Vietnamese national, were arrested in an operation on the Penang mainland.
Acting Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said two local men were nabbed in a hotel room and the third, believed to be the transporter, at the hotel lobby in Bukit Mertajam on Tuesday.
A canvas bag containing 9.23kg of cannabis and 4.23kg of cannabis buds was seized during the 10am raid.
He added that the transporter, who was paid between RM3,000 and RM4,000 for each delivery, had just completed two trips before his arrest.
Further interrogation on the men led to the arrest of the Vietnamese national in the Seberang Jaya area at about 3am on Wednesday.
'The foreigner led us to a nearby homestay that had been used as a drug storage facility. Upon inspection, we found six bags containing 111 transparent packages of cannabis buds, weighing a total of 98.6kg.
'The drugs seized could have been used by up to 230,000 people,' he said in a press conference at the Penang contingent police headquarters here yesterday.
DCP Mohd Alwi said the drugs were smuggled from a neighbouring country and intended for distribution in Penang and Kuala Lumpur via land routes.
Three of the suspects tested positive for drugs and all four have been remanded for seven days for further investigation.
'During the raid, we also seized RM1,300 in cash and three vehicles valued at RM198,000,' he said.

They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code. Sentencing was deferred pending character reports, with the next hearing on October 28. Bail was set at RM1,000 each with one surety. Two sisters bound over for stealing from luxury brand outlet
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 13): Two sisters who admitted to stealing from a luxury brand outlet were placed under a two-year bond of good behaviour by a Magistrate's Court here. Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin ordered Fung Siew Fa @ Emily, 54, to be bound over for two years with a RM500 deposit for each of her three charges, totalling RM1,500, with one surety. Her elder sister, Fung Shaw Yiew @ Jellfer, 63, who faced one charge, received a similar sentence with a RM1,000 deposit and one surety. They committed the offences at a boutique in a shopping complex here between October 8 and 11, 2024, involving stolen handbags and card cases. Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing the duo, requested the minimum sentence of a bond of good behaviour or a RM2,000 fine, citing that both were first-time offenders, elderly, unemployed, and suffering from health issues. Lim said Emily, a divorced mother of two, has a heart condition and high cholesterol, while Jellfer, a single mother of two and grandmother of a 10-year-old, suffers from hypertension and high cholesterol. The prosecution requested that the bonds include the required deposits.

Couple, Allegedly Hired By Loan Shark, Nabbed For Deadly Segamat Blaze
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- A couple, believed to have been hired by a Singapore-based loan shark, were arrested for a house fire that killed a 72-year-old woman in Kampung Bukit Siput, Segamat on July 25. Johor police chief, Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad, said the Segamat District Police Headquarters operations centre received an emergency call regarding a fire involving five houses at about 4.30 am. "Investigations by the police and the Johor Fire and Rescue Department found elements of arson. "Johor police formed a special task force for the investigation and arrested the couple, a 21-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend, in Subang Jaya, Selangor, a week after the incident. "Interrogation of both suspects revealed that an Ah Long (loan shark) syndicate in Singapore hired them to carry out criminal intimidation by setting fire to the house of a borrower who had failed to repay a loan," he said in a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters here today. Ab Rahaman said investigations found that the couple were suspected of actively committing mischiefs in Johor and Selangor since July, receiving RM1,000 for each job. "At the time of the incident, the elderly woman was alone. She had never received any threat, and it is believed that the suspected loan was taken out by a family member of the victim," he said. He said four investigation papers had been referred to the Johor State Legal Advisor's office and received instructions for prosecution. Ab Rahaman added that the male suspect will be charged at the Segamat Magistrate's Court tomorrow with nine charges under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for causing death without intent, Section 436 for arson, and Section 507 for criminal intimidation.
