Buffy Sainte-Marie's Polaris and Juno Awards Revoked Following Claims She Fabricated Identity

Following a recent scandal alleging that the folk artist and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie had fabricated her Canadian Indigenous roots, the Polaris Music Prize and Juno Awards have revoked honors bestowed on the musician.
The release of a 2023 documentary produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) called Sainte-Marie's Indigenous identity into question. A fervent activist for Indigenous causes, as reflected in songs like 'Now That the Buffalo's Gone,' Sainte-Marie had long claimed that she was born and raised on a Cree reservation in Saskatchewan. However, the CBC program uncovered she was in fact born in Massachusetts.
Earlier this year, Sainte-Marie, was stripped of her Order of Canada appointment. Now, the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Awards have decided that her collected accolades from both institutions will be rescinded, due to her inability to provide tangible proof of her Canadian and/or Indigenous identity.
The Polaris Prize was first awarded in 2006 and honors one full-length musical project created by a Canadian artist annually. Sainte-Marie had been awarded two Polaris Prizes; the first for her 2015 album Power in the Blood and later a Heritage Prize, which awards works that were released prior to the voting body's first ceremony, for her 1964 record It's My Way!
'Our eligibility criteria requires all nominees to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents,' read a statement from the organization, 'With proof of status provided through government-issued documentation, including passports, birth certificates, permanent resident cards, and/or secure certificates of Indian Status.'
The Juno Awards has a longer history in Canada. The first JUNOS were called the Gold Leaf Awards and its inaugural ceremony was held in February 1970. Presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) the JUNOS honor new releases from Canadian artists that year, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. Sainte-Marie had received multiple Juno Awards, including the Humanitarian Award in 2017 and Indigenous Music Album of the Year in 2018. CARAS also founded the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1978, inducting Sainte-Marie in 1995, meaning she will no longer be part of the group of famed musicians, which includes Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrisette, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Leonard Cohen, among others.
According to a CARAS press statement, the Academy acknowledges that 'this decision is not a reflection of Ms. Sainte-Marie's artistic contributions.'
The statement continued: 'Buffy Sainte-Marie has been a strong supporter and advocate for Canadian music, and we acknowledge the past contributions she has made to our organization. However, CARAS' mandate is to educate, develop, celebrate, and honor Canadian artists. Maintaining the integrity of this process is essential to ensuring the organization continues to fulfill its purpose.'
Following the release of CBC's report, Sainte-Marie removed explicit claims of being Cree from her website, however, she maintained that she was Indigenous heritage in public statements. In a new statement responding to her being stripped of the Order of Canada and other accolades, Sainte-Marie said she 'never treated my citizenship as a secret and most of my friends and relatives in Canada have known I'm American, and it's never been an issue.' She added, 'Although it's true that I've never been certain of where I was born, and did investigate the possibility that I may have been born in Canada, I still don't know.'
As for her being stripped of her accolades, Sainte-Marie stated, 'It was very lovely to host the medals for awhile, but I return them with a good heart.'
Sainte-Marie, 84, retired from live performances in 2023, citing physical injuries and health problems. Her last record was 2017's Medicine Songs.

Howie Mandel to host Toronto-shot ‘Price Is Right' spinoff for Citytv

TORONTO - Come on down, eh! A Canadian spinoff of 'The Price is Right' headlines Rogers' new slate of Canadian originals coming to Citytv. The media giant says Toronto-born comedian Howie Mandel will host a reimagining of the U.S. game show, helmed by Drew Carey south of the border. Production begins this December in Toronto, with the show airing in spring 2026. While the Bob Barker-hosted original was a daytime TV staple, Rogers says it plans to make a prime-time evening version of the show, which has a working title of 'The Price Is Right Tonight.' 'It's important to us when we take on a format that there's a reason to Canadianize it and I think for 'Price Is Right,' there were a lot of reasons that it made sense,' says Kale Stockwell, head of original programming for Rogers. 'I love that idea that any Canadian can be picked out of the audience and brought on stage. I think that is so fun and maybe it's missing from other game show formats. So we thought the opportunity to engage the audience directly was really important.' Stockwell noted that the show is part of Rogers' broader relationship with Fremantle, the British production house that licenses Citytv's 'Canada's Got Talent' — where Mandel is a judge — and other popular game show formats. 'The Price Is Right' has had numerous international spinoffs over the years, including 'Le Juste prix' ('The Right Price') in France, 'OK, il prezzo e giusto!' ('OK, The Price is Right!') in Italy and 'Atinale al precio' ('Hit the Price') in Mexico. Citytv's upcoming Canadian productions also include a one-hour red carpet special in September celebrating the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, led by Arisa Cox of the defunct reality series 'Big Brother Canada.' Rogers is the presenting partner of the upcoming movie marathon, set to mark its half-century milestone Sept. 4 to 14. Slated for winter is a third season of the police procedural 'Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent,' which won the Canadian Screen Award for best drama series on Sunday. An eighth season of cop-and-dog drama 'Hudson & Rex' will premiere this fall, with 'Game of Thrones' star Luke Roberts joining the cast. 'Breakfast Television' will continue its Ontario-wide morning broadcast with Dina Pugliese and Tim Bolen at the helm. Among the new U.S. imports coming to Citytv is the NBC competition series 'On Brand with Jimmy Fallon,' which follows 'The Tonight Show' host as he launches a marketing agency and searches for creative talent to join his team. Also on the slate are 'Surviving Earth,' an eight-episode prehistoric docuseries exploring past mass extinctions, and 'The Making of Wicked,' a one-time live special hosted by the blockbuster musical's stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, airing this fall from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Reality hits returning this summer include new simulcast seasons of ABC's 'Bachelor in Paradise,' 'Celebrity Family Feud,' 'The Golden Bachelor' and 'Dancing with the Stars,' and NBC's 'America's Got Talent.' NBC dramas returning in simulcast include 'Brilliant Minds,' 'Law & Order' and 'Chicago Med.' Rogers also announced new U.S. titles coming to its specialty lineup, which features several new brands. Last June, Rogers announced landmark multi-year deals with Warner Bros. Discovery, securing Canadian rights to top lifestyle brands — including HGTV, Food Network and Discovery — previously held by Corus Entertainment and Bell Media. New on HGTV is 'Chasing the West,' which sees Drew and Jonathan Scott help families adapt to ranch life in states including Arizona, California and Texas. HGTV's 'Condemned,' meanwhile, follows a father-daughter duo as they attempt to rescue some of Detroit's most rundown homes. HGTV will also feature new seasons of home renovation favourites include 'House Hunters,' '100 Day Dream Home' and 'Help! I Wrecked My House.' Bravo will introduce reality series 'The Real Housewives of Rhode Island' and 'The Valley: Persian Style,' while FX adds star power with drama series 'The Lowdown' starring Ethan Hawke and horror series 'Alien: Earth' featuring Sydney Chandler and Timothy Olyphant. Returning shows on Bravo include new seasons of reality hits such as 'The Real Housewives' franchises, 'Below Deck Mediterranean,' 'Vanderpump Rules' and 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.' The Food Network will dish out fresh servings of 'Chopped,' 'Holiday Baking Championship,' 'Halloween Baking Championship' and 'Bobby's Triple Threat.' Guy Fieri is back too, with new episodes of 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' and 'Guy's Grocery Games.' Discovery will air new seasons of 'Homestead Rescue,' 'Expedition X,' 'Expedition Unknown,' 'The Last Woodsmen' and 'Street Outlaws.' Splashy TV event Shark Week will return for its 37th year in July. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 3, 2025.

Graze the Bench: Lincoln's ‘unofficial kickoff to summer' showcases wine, food and music

Wine, food and music will be in the spotlight at seven wineries in the Beamsville Bench area this weekend. 'It's the unofficial kickoff to summer,' said Heidi Fielding, co-owner of Fielding Estate Winery , one of the participants in the 15th annual Graze the Bench . 'For us, I think it's a huge celebration of our area,' Fielding said. 'Our local people bring their guests in from out of town and really showcase what's in our backyard. It is literally their go-to, do-not-miss event every year.' Graze the Bench ticket holders get three tokens they can exchange for food or wine at any of the wineries on the bench tour: Domaine le Clos Jordanne , Hidden Bench Estate Winery , Peninsula Ridge Estates Winery , Rosewood Estates Winery , The Organized Crime Winery and Thirty Bench Wine Makers . Fielding said since the U.S. started levying tariffs on Canadian products earlier this year the wineries have seen a boost in business. 'I think people are paying more attention and are seeking out more local wines and restaurants, so it has been good for us. We've had a lot of new customers and new interest in the wines,' Fielding said. Graze the Bench event manager Jen Feschuk said sales have been brisk and tickets only remain for Sunday's event. 'Saturday (2,500 tickets) sold out very quickly in March,' Feschuk said. Sunday tickets and $10 shuttle passes can be purchased at . A shuttle service will be available at St. John Catholic Elementary School on King Street in Beamsville during the noon to 5 p.m. event. Britnie Bazylewski, tourism development officer for Town of Lincoln , said Graze the Bench is expected to generate nearly $400,000 in visitor spending . 'It's the start of the summer tourism season in Lincoln,' she said. 'We know how to party. It's opening our doors and our hearts to our destination in a way where folks are ready to have a little bit of fun and shed those winter blues with us out here in the benchlands.'
