Google Pixel 10 launch with advanced AI features unveiled

The Sun15 hours ago
NEW YORK: Google has officially launched its new Pixel 10 smartphone series, packed with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
The announcement was made at a star-studded event in Brooklyn hosted by comedian Jimmy Fallon.
Product manager Tyler Kugler stated that Pixel continues to be the best way for people to try out the latest bleeding-edge AI from Google.
The new lineup includes a foldable phone, an improved Pixel smartwatch, and earbuds all designed to work seamlessly with AI and each other.
Fallon humorously described the launch as like a Taylor Swift announcement for nerds during his opening monologue.
Pixel phones currently hold a small portion of the high-end smartphone market dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi.
Forrester principal analyst Thomas Husson noted that Google Pixel devices were initially designed as a technological showcase to limit Android fragmentation.
Husson added that ten years later, the strategic challenge is still not to become the market leader but to demonstrate the value of Google's integrated ecosystem.
The new AI capabilities allow the Gemini assistant to look through phone cameras to see what users see, answering questions about locations or objects.
Google's product team described the new Pixel Watch 4 as a redesigned experience marking the biggest update to the line.
The watch features fitness tracking fine-tuned to distinguish between activities like walking, bicycling, or tennis.
Users can command the Gemini AI assistant directly from their wrist using the Pixel Watch.
Gemini can detect the speaker's mood and adjust its responses accordingly, according to Google's development team.
The AI technology has also been used to add 100x telephoto lens capability to Pixel smartphone cameras.
Pixel 10 prices start at $799, with the Pixel Pro Fold model beginning at $1,799.
Google's move comes as Apple is seen as lagging in the fierce AI race among tech giants.
The company is competing with powerhouses such as Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft in integrating advanced AI throughout its offerings.
Husson noted that while Pixel's market share remains below 5 percent, it serves as a true laboratory of innovation in the age of AI.
The strategy also serves as a means of countering Apple's integrated hardware-software-services approach.
Google remains a strategic partner for Samsung and the broader Android ecosystem despite the competition.
Samsung has also made AI a centerpiece of its Galaxy smartphone line, recently releasing the new Galaxy Z Fold7.
The Brooklyn launch event blended product pitches with appearances by stars including The Jonas Brothers and Stephen Curry.

Germany's Ecosia proposes stewardship to run Google Chrome

FILE PHOTO: A logo is pictured at Google's European Engineering Center in Zurich, Switzerland July 19, 2018. Picture taken July 19, 2018. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann/File Photo/File Photo STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Germany's Ecosia, a nonprofit search engine, said on Thursday it has submitted a proposal to assume a 10-year stewardship of Alphabet's Google Chrome web browser. According to the proposal, Google would legally separate Chrome into a foundation, retaining ultimate ownership and intellectual property rights and give Ecosia operational responsibility for 10 years, Ecosia said. Ecosia plans to reinvest part of Chrome's profits in climate action under Ecosia's governance, with the remainder returned to Google as compensation for the stewardship. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier in August, Perplexity AI made a $34.5 billion unsolicited all-cash offer for Chrome, a bid far above its own valuation as the startup reaches for the browser's billions of users pivotal to the AI search race. Malaysia enters global AI race with Ilmu, a chatbot to rival ChatGPT

SHAH ALAM – While we have become familiar with helpful artificial intelligence (AI) assistants like ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Gemini, Malaysia has now stepped into the AI landscape with its own homegrown solution: Ilmu, an intelligent chatbot tailored for Malaysians. Developed through a partnership between YTL AI Labs and Universiti Malaya, Ilmu (short for Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu) marks a significant milestone as the nation's first locally-built, multimodal large language model. Created with a deep understanding of Malaysia's cultures and languages, it was benchmarked to rival world-class AI models like GPT-4o, DeepSeek-v3, and Llama 3.1. Its performance in Bahasa Melayu has set new standards, especially on MalayMMLU, an international benchmark for the Malay language, highlighting its fluency and contextual accuracy. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched Ilmu during the inaugural Asean AI Summit in Kuala Lumpur. 'This launch also signifies that Malaysia is no longer merely a consumer of technology but has now proven capable of developing world-class innovations through the expertise of its own people. "Ilmu was designed to understand, respect, and celebrate the nation's diversity, while opening new avenues in education, public services, and industrial innovation,' he said at the summit, as posted on his official X account. Unlike its global counterparts, Ilmu's data and servers are hosted entirely within Malaysia, reinforcing digital sovereignty and localised security. Designed to surpass GPT-4 in Malay-language proficiency, Ilmu is already in use across education and multilingual citizen support services. According to a report by Awani, YTL AI Labs executive director Lou Yeoh stated that Ilmu symbolises a historic step for Malaysia. 'This is highly significant because we are now on par with the world's top models like GPT, Llama and DeepSeek. "However, Ilmu is uniquely Malaysian, owned by Malaysia, trained in our language, and embedded with our cultural context,' the article read. Set to be released on Sept 16, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, the first version of Ilmuchat will be available in web and mobile formats, supporting communication in Malay, English and Manglish. The initial rollout will focus on text-only interactions, with voice and image support to follow in later updates. The project has already attracted attention from both local and international sectors, with organisations in automotive, finance, media, healthcare, education, telecommunications and technology exploring or adopting its capabilities. In conjunction with the launch, three major initiatives were introduced to broaden Ilmu's accessibility and application. The first, Ilmu for Business, allows companies to integrate Ilmu's capabilities through API access, offering enterprise-grade AI tools tailored to local needs. The second initiative, the Ilmu AI Accelerator Programme, was launched in collaboration with MDEC and provides up to USD$1 million worth of free API tokens to qualifying startups, encouraging innovation and development within the AI ecosystem. Ilmuchat for Consumers, a smart chatbot described as 'Malaysia's ChatGPT,' will be made available for early access beginning Sept 16, in celebration of Malaysia Day. With Ilmu's introduction, Malaysia not only strengthens its standing in the global AI ecosystem but also ensures that future technological advancements will remain firmly rooted in national values and identity.

Pixel 10: Google's base flagship model features Tensor G5, new telephoto camera, bigger battery, Pixelsnap (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Almost nine years since the original Pixel smartphone was launched, here comes the new Google Pixel 10. As per what you may expect, the 2025 iteration of Google's flagship smartphone brings together a number of upgrades which revolves around performance, camera, and AI features. Just like the 9th generation Pixel phones, the new Pixel 10 can only be obtained with just one screen size which is 6.3-inch. In fact, the Pixel 10 screen still carries plenty of characteristics from its predecessor such as OLED panel, 1080 x 2424 resolution, pixel density of 422 PPI, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and dynamic refresh rate range of 60 to 120Hz. However, Pixel 10's display has a much higher peak brightness of 3000 nits as opposed to Pixel 9 which maxes out at 2700 nits. At the core of the Pixel 10 is the new Google Tensor G5 processor which is also being used on the Pixel 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold. Unlike its Pro siblings though, the Pixel 10 only has 12GB of RAM instead of 16GB. This implementation also allows the new phone to support Apple MagSafe accessories too but Pixel 10's Qi2 wireless charging capability is still limited to 15W. Meanwhile, one of the biggest upgrades that Google has implemented on the Pixel 10 is by implementing a tri-camera setup. While it still features the 48MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide camera, Pixel 10 also has a new 10.8MP telephoto camera that also comes with 20x Super Res Zoom capability. Similar to Pixel 9, Google claimed that Pixel 10 has a battery life of more than 24 hours. That being said, it is actually being powered by a much larger 4,970mAh battery. In Malaysia, the Pixel 10 is now available for pre-order and will be released into store on 28 August with a starting price of RM3,999. Running on Android 16, the new phone can be obtained in several colourways including Indigo, Frost, Lemongrass, and Obsidian. — SoyaCincau Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold mobile phone is presented during the 'Made by Google' event, organised to introduce the latest additions to Google's Pixel portfolio of devices. — Reuters pic
