East Kol man season's 1st cholera hosp admission

Kolkata: A 26-year-old man from Picnic Garden, admitted to a hospital off EM Bypass, was diagnosed as suffering from cholera. While this diarrhoeal disease is common during the monsoon, sources said this is the first known case of cholera in the city this season.
The hospital informed the relevant authorities, including the health department and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Civic officials have taken water samples and sent them for testing, while a survey has been launched in the patient's locality to see if anyone else has symptoms of the waterborne disease.
Afroz Khan's family said he was admitted to Apollo Multispecialty Hospital on Thursday night with vomiting, stomach pain, and dehydration.
Investigative tests on Friday confirmed a cholera infection.
"His condition is stable and improving. He is being treated in the general ward as he does not need intensive care. We expect him to be discharged in a couple of days," said a relative.

Sources said Khan, an accountant in a private firm, was working from home for a month. Although doctors suspect either contaminated water or food to be the cause of the infection, none of his three family members have any cholera symptom.
According to Khan's family, they drink tap water supplied by KMC.
Though cases of cholera have decreased significantly in the city, health experts said a few cases are not unusual, especially during the monsoon. "We haven't got any cholera case this year. But a few cases during monsoon are not uncommon," said microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri of Peerless Hospital.
A diarrhoeal disease caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, cholera is associated with the monsoon, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to safe water. Heavy rain, flooding, and stagnant water create favourable conditions for the bacteria, leading to higher risk of an outbreak in and after monsoon. "We have collected water samples from the patient's building," said a KMC official, adding that a survey is being launched in Topsia-Tiljala, which is prone to waterborne diseases in monsoon, to check for others with cholera symptoms or any other waterborne infection.
The water department is also thinking of increasing the chlorination dosage if required.

Juniors report ragging during money collection for festival at Kurnool medical college

No ragging incident took place: KMC principal He stressed that such incidents tarnish the reputation of medical institutions, and promised strict action if the complaints were found to be genuine. The Health Minister also instructed the principal to submit the Anti-Ragging Committee's report without any delay. The government will not tolerate any form of harassment or misconduct by seniors in educational institutions, he asserted. However, in a press statement released on Saturday, medical college principal Dr K Chitti Narasamma made it clear that no ragging had occurred. Speaking on the findings of the internal probe, she said, 'There is no truth to the allegations of ragging. The college's Anti-Ragging Committee has conducted a detailed inquiry, including one-on-one discussions with students, and obtained written statements. Nowhere in the investigation did students confirm the occurrence of ragging.' The principal, however, clarified that the money collection was part of annual festival activities traditionally organised by students in the hostels, and not intended as a form of ragging. Further, she asserted that if any student was harassed or troubled under the guise of Ganesh celebrations, appropriate action will be taken. Apart from this, student groups and alumni have called for greater transparency, urging the college to prioritise student welfare and ensure that such festivals are voluntary, and inclusive, free from coercion or senior-junior tensions.

Is Your Heart Ageing Faster Than You? Here's How To Find Out Your "Heart Age"

Your heart may be older than you are, new research suggests. A study published Wednesday in JAMA Cardiology found that many adults, especially in the United States, have a "heart age" that is several years older than their actual age. Researchers from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine noted that this age gap is wider in men than in women. To help people assess their own cardiac health, the team developed a free online tool, called the PREVENT Risk Age Calculator, to calculate the heart age. According to Fox News, the tool uses information about an individual's health, such as their cholesterol levels, blood pressure, BMI, medications, smoking habits and diabetes status to come up with their estimated risk for cardiovascular disease and heart failure. The risk level is provided as an age rather than a percentage. "Heart age, or PREVENT age, may be particularly useful for patients and clinicians and be more effective in preventing heart disease," senior author Dr Sadiya Khan, the Magerstadt professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, who led the development of the PREVENT equations, told Fox News Digital. "It translates complex information about the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart failure over the next 10 years into a number that is easier to understand and compare with one we are all familiar with - your actual age," he added. With the tool, the researchers aim to help doctors and patients discuss heart disease risk more effectively in a bid to ensure the right therapies are used to prevent heart attack, stroke or heart failure events. Researchers put their heart age tool to the test using data from a nationally representative sample of more than 14,000 people ages 30 to 79. No one in the sample had a history of cardiovascular disease. The team then used the health data of the participants to calculate their heart age and compare that to their actual chronological ages. They found that, for many in the sample, the risk age of their heart was greater than their chronological age. Women had an average heart age of 55.4, nearly four years higher than their average chronological age of 51.3. Men, on the other hand, had an average heart age of 56.7, seven years higher than their chronological age of 49.7. While "it's probably not that meaningful if your age is off by one or two years," Dr Khan says, the authors recommend getting concerned if the gap is five years or more. "We hope this new heart age calculator will help support discussions about prevention and ultimately improve health for all people," he added. However, researchers said that there is one limitation of the study. "The definition of optimal risk may influence the calculation of PREVENT risk age," they wrote, adding, "Alternatively, population-based percentiles of risk can provide a complementary approach to communicating risk, but these are influenced by suboptimal population health." "This type of tool needs to be tested widely to determine if it is more readily understood," Dr Khan said.

Heart age calculator: Check your ‘heart age' — it can even predict disease risk and more

A recent study has suggested that the heart's age for several Americans could be a decade older than their actual age. In the United States, heart disease serves as the leading cause of death, and the research highlights that the heart might be aging faster compared to the rest of the body, Today reported. Dr Sadiya Khan, the Magerstadt professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told the news outlet that doctors usually give a percentage to talk about the patient's risk for a heart-related disease. Khan, along with her team, conducted a study to get a less abstract and more relatable way through which the risk of heart disease can be conveyed. For this, they worked around the idea of 'heart age,' since she said it is "a lot easier to understand". As part of their study, the researchers designed a heart age calculator that was based on the criteria set by the American Heart Association. Their work was published in the JAMA Cardiology earlier this week. The Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Events (PREVENT) tool of the American Heart Association tells people about their estimated risk for cardiovascular disease by taking into consideration various information, such as blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol levels, medications, and others. Taking a step forward, the new study has translated the risk percentages it provides into heart risk "ages," Today reported. Further, they tested this tool by utilizing data from a nationally representative sample of over 14,000 people, who were in the 30 to 79 age group. Notably, none of them had any history of cardiovascular disease. Sadiya Khan and her team used this data to calculate the heart age of these people and then compared it to their actual chronological ages. They found out that for many samples, the heart's risk age stood greater than the chronological age. The study mentions that men's heart risk age was found to be seven years older than their chronological age on average. On the other hand, the age gap for women was four years. Khan said it was "not that meaningful" if the age gap is off by one or two years, but she recommends people stay concerned if this gap is five years or more. Also, the study highlights that the heart age of Black men in the US was 8.5 years older than their chronological age, while it was found to be 6.2 years for white men. Meanwhile, Black women's hearts were 6.2 years older compared to their actual age, and the gap for white women was found to be 3.7 years. Usually, this is when the heart age remains equal to the person's chronological age. There are specific tools available online to calculate your heart age. Yes, it is possible. Experts suggest that people bring in healthy lifestyle changes to improve heart age.
