One woman lost $80K to a job scam; here's how to avoid them
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Every year, imposter scams, online shopping scams, and investment scams involving cryptocurrency are consistently among the most common when it comes to fraud, according to agencies like the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission.
So are job scams.
Those typically come in two forms — fake postings on legitimate job search websites or text messages.
Thrive Companies to transform former junkyard into mixed-use development
That's how it all started for a central Ohio woman who called Better Call 4 to anonymously share her cautionary tale.
'I got a text from this lady,' she said.
The sender claimed to be from a legitimate staffing agency.
'Asking if we, if I'm interested in any, any online jobs, part-time or full-time,' the scam victim said.
Thinking she could make some extra money, she replied asking for more information. She was then offered a digital marketing position for a company base in Australia. A few days later, someone saying they were from the company's human resources department reached out through WhatsApp.
'And then she said, I will make $500 salary from the company in 10 days… $1,500 in 20 days… and $3,000 in a month,' the victim said. 'Which really happened in the first five days, I made $1,500 and they transferred all the money to my account.'

Not to her bank account, though, but to a digital wallet, meaning all the payments came in the form of cryptocurrency.
'I asked, 'Why are you using cryptocurrency?'' the victim said. 'She said, 'We have users from all over the world, so each country has their own, you know, currencies. It's more convenient for everyone.' And I said 'Okay.''
But without a complete understanding of how it all worked, and believing what the company told her, before she knew it, she was $80,000 in the hole.
'With crypto, the thing is that you can't reverse your money back,' the scam victim said. 'Yeah, it's gone.'
Still, she filed a police report, hired an attorney, contacted the Ohio Attorney General's Office and the FBI. Then, called Better Call 4 to warn other job seekers.
If you get a text like this:
Do your research first; look into the company and reach out on your own.
Don't click on links you think could be legitimate.
Simply ignore the message and don't respond.
'They've been trying to get money from people like this, you know, it's just it's a new era for a scam,' the victim said.

If you spot a text scam, tell the FTC and forward it to 7726 (SPAM), or use your phone's report 'junk' option to delete and report it.

Italy has ended spyware contract with Paragon, parliamentary document shows
By Giuseppe Fonte and Alvise Armellini ROME (Reuters) -Italy has terminated a contract with Israeli spyware maker Paragon, a parliamentary document showed on Monday, following allegations that the Italian government used its technology to hack critics' phones. Paragon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Meta's WhatsApp chat service said earlier this year Paragon spyware had targeted scores of users, including a journalist and members of the Mediterranea migrant sea rescue charity critical of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The government said in February that seven mobile phone users in Italy had been targeted by the spyware. Rome denied any involvement in illicit activities and said it had asked the National Cybersecurity Agency to look into the affair. A newly published report from the parliamentary committee on security, COPASIR, showed that Italian intelligence services had initially put on hold and then ended their contract with Paragon following the media outcry. The report said Italy's domestic and foreign intelligence agencies had activated contracts with Paragon in 2023 and 2024 respectively and used it on a very limited number of people, with permission from a prosecutor. The foreign intelligence agency used the spyware to search for fugitives, counter illegal immigration, alleged terrorism, organised crime, fuel smuggling and counter-espionage and internal security activities, COPASIR said. It said members of the Mediterranea charity were spied on "not as human rights activists, but in reference to their activities potentially related to irregular immigration", with permission from the government. Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, Meloni's point man on intelligence matters, authorised the use of Paragon spyware on Mediterranea activists Luca Casarini and Beppe Caccia on September 5, 2024, the report said. Mantovano was not immediately available for comment. A Sicilian judge last month ordered six members of Mediterranea, including Casarini and Caccia, to stand trial on accusations of aiding illegal immigration, the first time crew members of a rescue vessel have faced such prosecution. All denied wrongdoing. The report found no evidence that Francesco Cancellato, a reported target and editor of investigative website Fanpage, had been put under surveillance using Paragon's spyware, as he had alleged to Reuters and other media outlets.

Meta Is Making a Big Bold Investment of Over $10B in Scale AI
Meta Platforms (META) is reportedly in talks to invest over $10 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) startup Scale AI. The news was first reported by Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter. If finalized, this investment would represent a significant shift for Meta, marking its largest external funding commitments to date. It would also be one of the largest private-sector funding deals in the AI sector to date. Confident Investing Starts Here: The terms of the deal remain unknown and are subject to change. The startup was valued at $13.8 billion in its most recent funding round, in which Meta, Nvidia (NVDA), and Amazon (AMZN) had participated. Bloomberg had reported earlier this year, that Scale AI was in talks for another funding round, potentially valuing the company at roughly $25 billion. Meta Is Investing Billions in Scale AI Scale AI was founded in 2016 by CEO Alexandr Wang. The company specializes in data labeling: assigning labels/tags to images, text, and other data used for training AI models. Scale AI has been growing rapidly and has become one of the prime beneficiaries of the generative AI revolution. In 2024, Scale AI generated revenue of $870 million and is set to more than double its sales this year to reach $2 billion. Scale AI serves a diverse set of customers, including Microsoft (MSFT), ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and the U.S. Department of Defense. The company uses a vast network of contract workers to scan, organize, and label troves of datasets, thus facilitating efficient AI model training. This process is crucial, since machine learning models require the usage and input of enormous amounts of data, and Scale AI's services enable companies to train their models more swiftly and with greater precision. Meta Is Going All-In on AI Meanwhile, Meta is going all-in on AI investments. It has committed to invest up to $65 billion in AI related projects this year. Although Meta does not operate its own cloud services platform, it has developed a successful series of large language AI models called Llama. Meta's Llama chatbot is used by approximately 1 billion users per month on its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp apps. Notably, Meta and Scale AI have also partnered earlier to develop the Defense Llama model for the government. Moreover, Meta's AI models are used by U.S. government agencies and defense contractors for military applications. Last week, Meta also struck a 20-year deal with nuclear energy company Constellation Energy (CEG) to buy green credits from its Illinois nuclear plant, effective 2027. This deal ensures a stable and sustainable energy supply for Meta's massive AI and data center operations, supporting its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. Is META a Good Company to Buy? Wall Street remains highly optimistic about Meta Platforms' long-term stock trajectory. On TipRanks, META stock has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 41 Buys, three Holds, and one Sell rating. Also, the average Meta Platforms price target of $697.55 implies that shares are almost fully valued at current levels. Year-to-date, META stock has gained 19.3%.
