A 26-year-old man appeared in the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The SAPS arrested him on June 13 while acting on a tip-off about suspicious activity in the area and did a targeted search.
Officers found the man with a 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, one magazine and 38 rounds of live 9mm ammunition.
They confiscated the weapon and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin of the gun and determine any possible links to criminal activity in the Delmas area.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said the firearm would be sent for ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in the commission of other crimes.
'The SAPS urge the public to report suspicious activity or illegal firearms to their nearest police station or call SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111,' said Ndubane.
Acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrest and thanked the community for its co-operation.
'If we continue working together by reporting criminal activities, we can reduce crime and create safer communities,' he said.

Don't wait to report a missing person police urges

Contrary to popular belief, there is no waiting period to report a missing person. This was reaffirmed by the South African Police Service, which emphasised that when someone goes missing, 'time is critical', urging the public to report a missing person at their nearest police station immediately. Here's what you need to report a missing person: Produce a recent photograph of the missing person, if possible Give a complete description of the missing person's last whereabouts, clothes they were wearing, as well as any information that can assist the investigating officer Complete and sign a SAPS 55(A) form. This form safeguards the SAPS from hoax reports, and indemnifies the SAPS to distribute the photograph and information of the missing person Obtain the investigating officer's contact details, and send any additional information that might become available If a missing person is found or returns voluntarily, inform the investigating officer immediately. A SAPS 92 form must be completed to inform the Bureau of Missing Persons that the missing person's report can be removed from the circulation system. Police minister vows to capture Jabulani Moyo, the cop killer

Jabulani Moyo is alleged to have killed two police detectives in Roodepoort on Friday, August 8. Image: SAPS Acting minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia said the SAPS will not rest until Jabulani Moyo is behind bars for the murder of two police officers who were transporting him back from court on Friday in Roodepoort, Gauteng. The officers were shot at and disarmed in Roodepoort CBD while returning Jabulani Moyo to prison after his court appearance for a February 2023 business robbery. Moyo was seen driving the abandoned police vehicle, which was later found kilometres from the crime scene, and police confirmed a murder case with two counts is under investigation. The suspect is currently on the run, and a manhunt has been launched. In a statement on Saturday, Cachalia offered the ministry's condolences to the families of the deceased officers. Their sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers as they work to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all South Africans,' he said. Cachalia said South Africans owe them and every officer who puts on the blue uniform a debt of gratitude. He said the National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, has deployed maximum resources to track down and apprehend Moyo. 'We condemn this brazen act of violence in the strongest possible terms. An attack on the police is an attack on the state. We will not rest until Jabulani Moyo is behind bars,' said the acting Minister. Cachalia urged the public to come forward with information on Moyo's whereabouts immediately. 'No detail is too small, and your assistance could be critical in ensuring that justice is served,' he said. He added that the Ministry stands with the men and women in blue. 'We mourn with you. And we will continue to support you as you carry out your vital work on behalf of our nation.' Masemola has deployed maximum resources to trace Moyo, including crime intelligence operatives, detectives, as well as the Gauteng DPC tracking teams and the Hawks. He urged all South Africans not to shelter the dangerous criminal, who is armed with a SAPS firearm stolen from an officer and allegedly used to kill the two detectives. 'Moyo must be stopped in his tracks, and he can only be prevented from committing further crimes if the community cooperates with the police by providing us with information on his whereabouts. 'Moyo is a dangerous criminal, and our operatives are on the ground looking for him to prevent him from committing any more heinous crimes. We will not rest until we find him, and we are also warning him to hand himself over to his nearest police station,' said Masemola. Those who may have information on this case, including the whereabouts of Moyo, are encouraged to call Warrant Officer Rabosiwana from the Hawks on 0728444442. The murder of two detectives precedes SAPS's annual Commemoration Day, held on the first Sunday of September, honouring 27 officers who died in the last financial year. SAPS has lost five officers in the line of duty since April 1 to date.

Union condemns brutal murder of two police officers by a prisoner in Gauteng

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) in Gauteng says it is deeply shocked and outraged by the brutal murder of two police officers in Roodepoort. The members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Trio Task Team were shot and killed in Roodepoort while transporting a suspect from court on Friday morning, 8 August. Police said preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 10:30 on Friday morning, two police officers were in transit with a suspect identified as Jabulani Moyo, who had earlier appeared in the Roodepoort court on an armed robbery case. Police said the two officers, a Sergeant and a Warrant Officer, were transporting Moyo back to prison after his appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on a case of business robbery that occurred in February 2023. 'While in Roodepoort CBD, they came under fire and were disarmed. The Sergeant was declared dead at the scene, while the Warrant Officer was transported to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.' According to popcru, video footage from the BP petrol station shows the suspect, identified as Jabulani Moyo, fleeing the scene in the state vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned in Onslow Street, Horizon, Roodepoort. The police union said these murders are not just an attack on our members but an attack on the very fabric of law enforcement and public safety in our communities. The cold-blooded killing of officers in the line of duty underscores the extreme risks faced daily by police officers and highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to protect them. Popcru provincial secretary in Gauteng Lerata Motsiri said the two police officers were not just SAPS members; they were dedicated public servants committed to fighting crime and making our streets safer. Their loss will be deeply felt by all who knew and worked with them. The murder of the two detectives comes at a time when the SAPS is preparing to honour 27 police officers who died in the line of duty in the last financial year. The SAPS Commemoration Day is an annual event that takes place on the first Sunday of September each year. Motisiri also called on the SAPS management to urgently review operational protocols for prisoner transport, ensuring that suspects are properly restrained and that officers are provided with adequate backup, particularly in high-risk cases. 'We also demand that the suspect responsible for these heinous acts be apprehended swiftly and face the full might of the law. 'POPCRU Gauteng will be engaging with the affected stations to provide support to colleagues and the bereaved families, while continuing to advocate for improved safety measures for all police officials,' she said.
