PWHL Seattle lands U.S. hockey legend Hilary Knight as first signing

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JANUARY 05: Hilary Knight #21 of the Boston Fleet skates against Montreal Victoire during a PWHL Takeover Tour game at Climate Pledge Arena on January 05, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The Brief U.S. standout Hilary Knight reached a one-year deal with PWHL Seattle after being left unprotected by the Boston Fleet. Knight was the co-leader in points in the PWHL last season with 29 points on 15 goals and 14 assists. Knight has appeared in four Olympics and 15 IIHF Women's World Championships for the United States, winning one Olympic gold medal and three silvers, and 10 gold medals and five silvers at the World Championships. The first player to sign a contract to play for PWHL Seattle just happens to be one of the most accomplished players in U.S. hockey history. PWHL Seattle reached an agreement with forward Hilary Knight on a one-year deal on Wednesday night, who has left unprotected by the Boston Fleet in the league's expansion process. Advertisement "Signing Hilary Knight was an absolute no-brainer - she's the heartbeat of any team she joins," said PWHL Seattle General Manager Meghan Turner said in a statement. "Her proven leadership and drive, the way she elevates everyone around her, those are qualities you can't teach. Hilary's not just a game-changer on the ice, she's the kind of person who defines a culture, and we're incredibly proud to have her as the first-ever player to join PWHL Seattle." Knight has appeared in four Olympics and 15 IIHF Women's World Championships for the United States, winning one Olympic gold medal and three silvers, and 10 gold medals and five silvers at the World Championships. Turner was the assistant general manager of the Fleet the last two seasons before being named the general manager of PWHL Seattle last month. With Knight being left unprotected in favor of forward Alina Müller, defender Megan Keller, and goaltender Aerin Frankel. Seattle and Vancouver are permitted to sign up to five players this week not under contract for next season prior to the expansion draft on June 9. The two teams can then select as many players as needed from the non-protected list from the six teams in the league to reach a 12-player maximum. Advertisement The signing of Knight is a major benchmark for the new franchise in Seattle. Knight, 35, was the co-winner of the 2024-25 PWHL Points Leader Award with the Fleet last season, scoring 29 points on 15 goals and 14 assists in 30 games, which tied her with Sarah Fillier of the New York Sirens. She's also a finalist for the PWHL Forward of the Year and Billie Jean King MVP awards. "I'm incredibly proud to be part of bringing professional women's hockey to the Pacific Northwest," Knight said. "Seattle holds a special place in my heart, and I'm beyond excited to join PWHL Seattle in such a storied sports city. I'm grateful to Meghan Turner for believing in me and bringing me on board as part of this new chapter. To my teammates, the staff, and the fans of Boston –– thank you. The Fleet wasn't just a team, it was home. These past two seasons were some of the most meaningful of my career, and I'll carry those memories with me forever." Knight has played in Seattle multiple times already as a member of the Fleet and U.S. Women's Team. Advertisement The Fleet played the Montréal Victoire at Climate Pledge Arena in January as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour, with Boston winning 3-2 in a shootout. Knight also played for the U.S. against Canada in the 2022-23 Rivalry Series at Climate Pledge Arena, scoring two goals with an assist in a 4-2 win. Knight is the IIHF Women's World Championships all-time leader in goals, assists, and points, and she holds the record for most Olympic Games played by a U.S. women's hockey player. Red Sox Trade Idea Deals $22 Million Closer For Top Catching Prospect

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers have not looked like a championship contender recently. In fact, the club with the highest payroll in baseball — nearly $337 million — has been less than a .500 team in June, winning just five of its 12 games, ahead of Saturday's action. Injuries have played a major role in the Dodgers' struggles, with 14 pitchers currently on the injured list — 15 if Shohei Ohtani is counted as a pitcher — which is remarkable considering that a typical MLB staff consists of 13 pitchers. FT. MYERS, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 15: Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox look on during a spring training team workout on February 15, 2024 at jetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Florida. More Billie Weiss/BostonSo far, closer Tanner Scott has escaped the injury plague. Scott was a major free agent acquisition for the Dodgers, who inked the 30-year-old to a four-year $72 million contract in the offseason. But Scott, who has accumulated four blown saves and two losses already, against 12 saves, has been shaky. The 2014 Baltimore Orioles sixth-round draft pick has, himself, admitted he has struggled with command of his pitches all season. At the same time, despite a recent minor hot streak in which they have won six of eight games, the Boston Red Sox remain a game under .500 on the season, well below the team's preseason expectations. More MLB: Red Sox Predicted to Trade Away 7-Time All-Star if Team's Struggles Continue That means the BoSox could be looking at becoming trade deadline sellers, shipping out at least some of their higher-priced talent in exchange for prospects, the building blocks of a better future for the club. Aroldis Chapman, the Red Sox' 36-year-old lefty closer, may be their most attractive trade asset. Despite his age and 16 seasons of mileage, the Cuban native is having one of his best seasons, converting 12 of 13 save opportunities and posting a 1.55 ERA in 29 innings pitched. Nor has Chapman lost any of his legendary velocity. He owns the fastest pitch of the season, firing a 103.8 mph fastball against the Texas Rangers on May 8. His average fastball speed of 99.2 mph ranks his heater in the 99th percentile of current MLB hurlers, the vast majority of whom are considerably younger than he is. But the Red Sox need catching, not just now but for the future. Rookie Carlos Narvaez, acquired in a little-noticed minor-league level trade with the Yankees over the offseason, has been an extraordinary discovery, forcing himself into the AL Rookie of the Year race. But Narvaez can't catch every game, and as a backup, Connor Wong has been useless, with just nine hits, none for extra bases, and zero RBI in 69 plate appearances. More MLB: Brewers Sensational Pitching Prospect Has Bizarre, Mind-Blowing MLB Debut Chapman is pitching on a one-year, $10.75 million contract. But he has never received a qualifying offer, which would make him worth at least $22 million for next season — with that being the set value of qualifying offers after this season. If Chapman, as is likely, would refuse the qualifying offer, his team would receive draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere. What does it all mean? It means Chapman makes an attractive trade target for the Dodgers, giving them half a season of a top-tier closer for a relatively inexpensive pro-rated salary — and if he then departs Los Angeles, the Dodgers get an extra draft pick. All they'd have to do is part with baseball's top overall catching prospect, the No. 15 overall prospect in the game, Dalton Rushing. The 24-year-old Rushing has already been used in the outfield by the Dodgers, who have Will Smith occupying the backstop position. Dealing Rushing would be rather easy for Los Angeles — but would immediately solve Boston's catching depth deficiency. The trade likely depends on whether the Red Sox' recent run of winning represents a genuine turnaround — in which case they would want to keep Chapman in the fold — or if it is just an illusion. By the trade deadline of July 31, the Red Sox will have a better idea, and will know whether they want to trade Chapman away at all. Phillies 'Underestimated' Outfield Drop-Off Since Bryce Harper's Position Change

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies' main goal at the deadline is to add relievers. However, their outfield is struggling to produce offensively as a unit. Currently, Nick Castellanos is the only outfielder who holds an OPS greater than .700 for the Phillies. While Kyle Schwarber can play the outfield, he's excluded from the group since he's the primary designated hitter. TORONTO, ON - JUNE 4: Bryce Harper #3 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts to striking out against the Toronto Blue Jays during the sixth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June... TORONTO, ON - JUNE 4: Bryce Harper #3 of the Philadelphia Phillies reacts to striking out against the Toronto Blue Jays during the sixth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 4, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. More"Since Harper's last game as a right fielder — April 16, 2022 in Miami — the Phillies ranked 11th in slugging (.415) and 12th in OPS (.730) from the three outfield spots entering the weekend," wrote Scott Lauber for The Philadelphia Inquirer. "Most of that production came in right (.425 slugging, .738 OPS), where Castellanos took over and has remained since Harper moved to first base midway through 2023. But the overall picture at the position is much worse. The Phillies' post-Harper outfield ranked 21st among 30 teams with 16.4 wins above replacement, according to Fangraphs. The nine teams with fewer outfield WAR combined for only four playoff appearances in the last three seasons." You don't need a math degree or the title of world's biggest baseball fan to know things are bleak in the Philadelphia outfield. However, as Lauber, points out, there's not much room for improvement in July. "And with slugging outfielders in high demand and short supply across the sport, it's difficult to spot a difference-making solution for president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to chase before the July 31 trade deadline," wrote Lauber. "The bigger problem is that the Phillies never adequately replaced Harper's bat in the outfield, in part because they underestimated an industry-wide downward trend in offense from the position." If the Phillies can convince Ryan O'Hearn to move to the outfield, he would be the best option to take over in left field to provide some juice in the lineup. Otherwise, the Phillies have to hope they can survive until the offseason. More MLB: Mets Should Pursue $13 Million Starter From Orioles After Kodai Senga Injury
