Edited excerpts from the interview:
How much did you miss Irrfan Khan for this film, **_Metro...In Dino_****, since he was in your previous Metro as the lead?**
When you're busy shooting, you just enter the mood of the film, but there were moments and there were scenes, which resonated with the old Metro. Konkona missed him more than I did. There was a scene and she just connected. There were moments here and there during the shooting, we really missed him and by the end of it, when the film got ready and we saw the final print, we're missing him all the more.
How did you decide on the star-cast for the film?
So, it was very easy. Pankaj Tripathi automatically came because we were working in Ludo. Aditya Roy Kapur was also working in the film. So, all these people, they automatically became part of Metro…In Dino. And then as for Ali Fazal, I was traveling with his wife Richa and took his number from her and called him. I got all my actors who were my first choice. And I was very lucky that I hit the jackpot. I had everybody say yes. And, I didn't have to go for a plan B for castings. This was the first choice for all the characters.
The story of Ali and Fatima, I actually like that the most because this is a little different, and this is quite a bit of a toxic love. So, did you have anybody in mind when you were doing these little just love stories and putting it all together?
Most of the story is about my today and my past and my tomorrow, and, you know, this is how you shape films and also get inspired from the lives of friends, cousins and all real characters around you into the film and deal with stories and characters. Our lives are actually very similar to those shown in this film. It is all floating around me, I didn't really work very hard to get these stories together.
On connecting the stories together…
I didn't flex my muscles too much. I can try to impress you with how I've linked this to that story. This is how they overlap. It's a simple story. So, this time, they are connected, organically, not so much. I didn't overdo it. And, this is how life is. Right now, we look into our lives. Our stories are connected with our parents and our sisters and cousins. I think it's just an extension of what we go through. Indirectly, our lives are connected and it does get affected by others.

You wanted to keep this as a musical?
Yes. That was the first idea, actually. And, because of this, the first ten minutes of the film, I really wanted the audience to root, with the characters. I felt that helped the audiences to understand the characters better. And, also, I wanted them to get used to the kind of narrative they are going to see in the film which is to be followed. So, it was a tough choice.
The method you use when directing a film…
I want my actors to be very happy on the set and know their character well. I don't give too much information to them before the shoot begins. Let them discover their roles and this is the method I have been following since ages.
There is a lot of chatter on work-life balance and the eight-hour shift put forward by Deepika Padukone, what do you have to say about that?
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
I also don't like long shifts at work. My actors never complain about long hours or stress at work. So, I absolutely agree with what Deepika Padukone had to say. It's a film, I never give my actors a chance to complain about this.

The slightly better-than-50 percent hold from Friday highlights positive word-of-mouth for this Jurassic film. If Not For Screen-Sharing Issues, Jurassic World: Rebirth Could Have Done Even Better Despite competition from Metro… In Dino, F1 and Sitaare Zameen Par, the film has held its ground. The English version leads collections, with Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubbed versions performing well. The film had poor showcasing given by Indian exhibitors. Increased showtimes over the weekend, driven by demand, boosted its numbers. Metro In Dino Day 4 India Box Office: Anurag Basu's movie holds BUT at very low levels on 1st Monday; Nets Rs 2.40 crore
Anurag Basu's Metro… In Dino has earned Rs 2.25-2.50 crore net on its first Monday at the Indian box office. This reflects a reasonable 70 percent hold from its opening day collection of Rs 3.25 crore. The film's opening weekend totaled Rs 15.75 crore, with day-wise collections of Rs 3.25 crore on Friday, Rs 5.75 crore on Saturday, and Rs 6.75 crore on Sunday. While the Monday hold of Anurag Basu ' film in percentage terms is solid, the low numbers suggest the film will struggle to make a significant impact, especially with new releases set to flood theatres. The Day Wise Net India Collections Of Dino Are As Under Dino Has Positive Word Of Mouth Going By The Hold; But Collections Remain Underwhelming The film, a spiritual sequel to 2007's Life… In A Metro, features a stellar cast including Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Pankaj Tripathi, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. It explores modern relationships in urban settings. Despite positive reviews, its box office performance remains underwhelming. The film has performed best in urban centers like Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata, and Delhi. However, unlike its predecessor, the film's music has failed to become as big as its predicessor, despite being really soothing to the ears. A hit soundtrack could have pushed the opening weekend closer to Rs 25 crore, with lifetime collections having a chance to go past Rs 50 crore. Dino's Box Office Trend Suggests A Finish In The Rs 30-35 Crore Net Range With new releases arriving this Friday, Metro… In Dino's screen count and showtimes will shrink, in turn hampering its run. The film's total cost, including production and marketing, is estimated at Rs 100 crore, with Rs 70 crore already recovered through non-theatrical deals. To break even, it needs at least Rs 55 crore net in India. Current trends suggest lifetime collections of Rs 30-35 crore; a number well short of the target. Better Opening Could Have Done Dino A Big Favour The 70 percent Monday hold is encouraging, showing some audience loyalty in urban markets. Yet, the low absolute numbers and looming competition make a robust box office run unlikely. Dino needed a stronger opening to leverage its positive word-of-mouth. As it stands, the film's theatrical performance may not cover its remaining costs, marking a financial loss to the film's makers. Dino In Theatres Dino plays in theatres. Metro In Dino Box Office Collection Day 4: Anurag Basu movie slows down on Monday, mints THIS amount
Metro In Dino Box Office Collection Day 4: Despite having crossed the lifetime earnings of its predecessor, Life in a Metro, Anurag Basu's Metro In Dino has failed to capture the Indian box office as it should have. Its earnings on Monday were hit drastically; however, the dip is mostly normal. As Anurag Basu marked his return to the film industry after an eight-year hiatus, the movie, which the audience gave positive reviews to, had a weekend total on the lower side. Metro In Dino is a heartfelt narrative of four couples in a contemporary setting. According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Basu's movie could've had stronger numbers, but the presence of two major Hollywood movies and Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has cost it dearly. 'Metro In Dino shows encouraging trends over the weekend, clearly indicating that its target audience – urban centres – has responded positively to the film... However, the weekend total remains on the lower side,' he wrote in a tweet. The movie has minted ₹ 16.58 crore net on its opening weekend. 'The weekend numbers could've been stronger in an open run, but the presence of two major #Hollywood films – Jurassic World Rebirth and F1 The Movie – along with the steady performance of the holdover title Sitaare Zameen Par has resulted in a division of business,' he added. Adarsh highlighted that all eyes are now on the weekday trends. 'Metro In Dino needs to hold steady at Friday levels [or thereabouts] to register a healthy total.' According to film industry tracker Sacnilk, Metro In Dino earned ₹ 1.43 crore till 7 PM on Monday, Day 4. With this, the movie's total collection stood at ₹ 18.18 crore on Monday. These are just early estimates from the movie's Monday earnings. The numbers will be revised later to include night show collections. Metro In Dino saw an overall 13.89% occupancy on July 7. For the Hindi version, the occupancy was as follows: The numbers for the night shows are yet to be released. Produced by T-Series and Anurag Kashyap Films, the movie features a star ensemble cast. In addition to Sara Ali Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma, it features Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Saswata Chatterjee in key roles.
