Latvia to provide 1,500 combat drones to Ukraine
"Two Latvian companies will deliver a total of 12,000 drones worth 17 million euros to Ukraine in the first half of this year as part of the international drone coalition," he wrote on X.
The allied initiative, co-led by the U.K. and Latvia, was launched in January 2024 to strengthen Ukraine's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities, a key factor in modern warfare.
By late 2024, nearly 20 countries had joined the coalition.
Latvia, one of Ukraine's biggest supporters, has committed to providing military support at the level of 0.25% of its GDP every year and will provide thousands of drones.
Ukraine is also working to scale up domestic production. In Dec. 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that Ukrainian drones accounted for over 96% of all UAVs used by the military in 2024.

Ukrainian raid behind enemy lines kills 330 Russian troops
Ukrainian special forces on Tuesday claimed to have killed more than 330 Russian troops in a dawn raid behind enemy lines. Kyiv's defence intelligence (HUR) said a Russian advance in Sumy was 'stopped cold' when troops from its elite Timur unit infiltrated enemy positions and eliminated scores of Vladimir Putin's soldiers in close-quarter fighting and with co-ordinated drone and artillery strikes. HUR did not specify the exact date or location of the battle, but Russia's push into the region has stalled in recent weeks because of Ukraine's strong resistance. A video released by HUR showed Ukrainian fighters approaching the target in a low-flying helicopter before engaging the enemy in a wooded area with assault rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers. Explosions and screams were heard as Ukrainian artillery pounded enemy positions, and dead bodies lay on the ground. Outside the trees, Timur troops could be seen speeding in open-top trucks down unmetaled roads and hand-launching drones in fields. Overwhelmed Russian soldiers were heard over intercepted radio transmissions refusing to attack Ukrainian positions, HUR wrote. '[They were] justifying themselves with far-fetched reasons,' it added. At least 334 Russian troops were killed and over 550 wounded, HUR said. It signed off the video with: 'The armed struggle continues! Glory to Ukraine!' HUR said the operation disrupted Russian supplies of food and ammunition. The action was carried out by the forces of the Chymera, Yunger, Stugna, Siberian Battalion, Aratta, 1514, Paragon, Art Division, First Line, Raven Group, and 6th Special Operations Unit, which are part of the overall Timur Special Unit. Russian forces entered the Sumy Oblast earlier this year after recapturing most of the neighbouring Kursk Oblast in Russia. They aimed to carve out a 'buffer zone' along Ukraine's northeastern border. Ukraine claimed to have halted the Russian advance and even to have recaptured some villages. Severnnyi, a Russian military blogger, wrote on Monday that Moscow's forces had been surrounded in the Oleksiivka area of the region. He said: 'They have us trapped. Water on three sides, and Ukrainians on the fourth.' The elite Timur unit is an umbrella command within HUR that coordinates a number of specialised forces. The group takes its name from its leader, Lieutenant-Colonel Timur, who planted a Ukrainian flag in Crimea for the first time in 10 years in a special operation in August 2024. Kyiv buries soldier's wife and daughters killed in Russian attack
Men in military uniform shouldered the three white coffins out of a schoolyard in Kyiv on Tuesday, carrying a Ukrainian mother and her two children killed by the Russians to be buried. Residents held each other and wept as they bid a final farewell to their neighbours, who died at dawn on Friday, when a barrage of Russian drones and missiles pounded the Ukrainian capital for hours. Across a leafy park next to the school, flowers, toys, and portraits of those killed were laid beneath the remains of a nine-storey residential building gutted in the attack, which killed at least 31 people. "It is difficult to imagine the grief of our brother, who lost two little daughters and his beloved wife in an instant," said the military unit of Igor Gumeniuk, the serviceman whose family was buried. Local media reported that Irina and her children Anastassia, 13, and Alina, 10, had fled the fighting in the eastern Donetsk region -- where Russia has concentrated its firepower -- before settling in Kyiv. "Alina and Nastya were sincere, kind and bright girls. We will remember their smiles, their kind hearts, their desire to live and learn," the girls' school that held the ceremony wrote on Facebook. One of Irina's final social media posts from last month showed the family meeting in eastern Ukraine with Igor, an active serviceman. "We were happy together all day for the first time in eight months," she wrote on Facebook, alongside pictures of the family relaxing by a river. Russia has stepped up its long-range drone and missile attacks on Ukraine over recent months as US-led efforts to end the more than three-year invasion appear to stall. Thirty-nine-year-old doctor Roman Moskalenko, whose body was found beneath the rubble in Kyiv, also received a farewell from his fellow medics. "His colleagues remember him as attentive, caring, and professional," Kyiv's Vechirniy media outlet reported.
