Dante Moore named one of biggest impact players in 2025

Yahoo14-02-2025
Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks project to be among the top teams in the nation one again in 2025, looking to defend their title as Big Ten Champions and head back into the College Football Playoff for a second straight season.
Should they find a similar type of success, though, it will undoubtedly look different. With Dillon Gabriel now off to the NFL, redshirt sophomore Dante Moore is projected to take over and lead Will Stein's offense.
Will he live up to the high expectations that were placed on him as a 5-star QB in the 2023 class, or will he look more like the QB who struggled as a true freshman at UCLA?
It's a question that is impossible to answer at this point, which is why Moore is one of the biggest impact players in the nation in 2025, according to ESPN. His production could make or break the Oregon season when all is said and done.
"With Dillon Gabriel departing, a lot will fall on the shoulders of quarterback Dante Moore," ESPN's Paolo Uggeti wrote. "He transferred from UCLA last offseason and was able to spend a season watching Gabriel, learning the Ducks' offense from offensive coordinator Will Stein. Though this will be his third season in college football, Moore will turn 20 in March, and as his freshman season with the Bruins showed, he has a lot of potential. The good news: Oregon's track record for picking and developing quarterbacks in recent years is one of the best in the country, and Moore could be the program's next success story. But to return to the playoff stage and end the season on a better note, he'll need to be."
Oregon also has Austin Novosad in the QB room that they can turn towards if necessary, but the early expectation going into spring football is that Moore not only will be the guy, but can be good enough to lead a championship-caliber team in Eugene.

James Franklin: ‘We're in total control to change the narrative' about Penn State

Josh Pate traveled to State College to sit down with the Nittany Lions head coach and discuss the team's expectations for this season after losing in last year's College Football Playoff semifinal. View more Video Transcript There's a lot of talk outside this building, a lot of pressure, a lot of do or die, a lot of all this is your mind really the same place right now it always would be this time of camp? None of that stuff matters? Well, it doesn't to me and it doesn't in this building. I, I truly believe that the. Problem is I gotta have a bunch of interviews and I got to answer a lot more questions because we recognize there's more talk going on nationally, which we've earned, you know, we've earned that, right? So, um, but, but yeah, in the building, the expectations around here are always really high. I mean, last year, you know, we finished the game before the national championship and, and people were pissed, right? Like most places would die to have that type of season. So that's always the expectation here at Penn State. When you guys came out of the game last year, semi-final game. It was a kind of an uncharted territory, but it was kind of weird because we were in a playoff that we had never seen before. So, you know, you got many different ways that you can look at that. But when you came out of that dust settled, how did you grade last year in totality? Yeah, I think when you take everything into consideration, really good, you know, feel really good about the season. You just feel like the way it ended, we had some opportunities, especially early in the game that we didn't capitalize on that could have changed the complexion of the game. Um, so that's what that's what frustrates you. You look back and you're like, uh, we, we really had an opportunity, uh, you know, to capitalize and and really, you know, make a run. So, um, that's where it kind of leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth and it's tremendous motivation for the offseason. The pressure, the criticism that comes, you know, it's either glory or it's castigation depending on the outcomes of those close games. They used to say about Kirby for a long time, can't win the big one, can't win the big one, then he won the big one. And then they said it about Ryan Day, can't win the big one, can't win the big one. He's won the big one. The big one is just a national championship. So then they move on. All right, who's next? James Franklin's over here, Uh, Brian Kelly is over here. You get compensated a lot. You got good resources here, so no one feels sorry for you. Have you ever thought it's fair, it's unfair, or do you not care? Well, what I, what I think is that nobody else cares. So I'm not gonna spend any time on it. I, again, I think at the end of the day, when you took the Penn State job, you knew what came with it. When you decided to be the quarterback at Penn State, this is what comes with it. You don't fill up a 107,000-seat stadium with normal people. Fans is short for fanatics, right? Like you, you drove around this town, where do they all come from? Right? So, so that's what comes with it, and, and we embrace that. The, the best part about all of it. We're in total control. We're in total control to change the narrative, um, but I love that, like this, these are the conversations we're in. That's why I came to Penn State. James Franklin, we appreciate it, man. Thank you so much. Thank you. Close

Wide receiver-depleted 49ers trade for Chiefs' underperforming Skyy Moore

The San Francisco 49ers addressed a problem position Wednesday by trading for Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore, a league source said. With their wide receiver corps weakened by injuries and a pending suspension, the 49ers hope they bolstered the spot by adding a 2022 second-round pick who has yet to realize expectations. The 49ers traded a 2027 sixth-round pick and received a 2027 seventh-rounder in exchange. The trade won't be official until Moore passes a physical. After trading speedy All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins three years ago, the Chiefs selected Moore 54th overall to replace their decorated vertical threat. But that never happened. Moore, who ran a 4.41-second 40 before he was drafted, had 43 catches for 494 yards and one touchdown in 36 games with Kansas City. Last year, he didn't have a catch while playing 82 offensive snaps in the first six games before his season ended due to a core muscle injury. The 49ers have been in the market for a wideout. Last week, they were reportedly the other team involved in serious talks for Texans wide receiver John Metchie, who was traded to the Eagles. General manager John Lynch has been working the phones because the 49ers' wideout corps is in flux. 49ers' Demarcus Robinson suspended for first 3 regular-season games Kyle Shanahan touts 49ers' new vibe. Here's what threatens those good feelings All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (knee) is not expected to be ready to return until Week 6 at the earliest, rookie fourth-round pick Jordan Watkins (ankle) may not be ready for the start of the season and Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury in Tuesday's practice after missing most of training camp with the same injury. Meanwhile, Demarcus Robinson has been suspended by the NFL for the first three games for a DUI arrest, although he's appealed the penalty. In addition, Jauan Jennings, who led the team's wideouts with 77 catches and 975 yards last year, hasn't practiced since July 27 due to a calf injury. Jennings' desire for a contract extension on the heels of his breakout season has raised questions about the severity of his injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has said an MRI has confirmed Jennings is dealing with a calf issue, an ailment that also sidelined him for part of last year's training camp. Shanahan has not provided a timeline for Jennings' return. He said Tuesday that it was an important for Jennings to resume practicing in the near future with the regular-season opener at Seattle looming on Sept. 7. 'Yeah, any player, not just Jauan — but people need to practice,' Shanahan said. 'They need to get ready to play an NFL season or you end up getting hurt. So, hopefully, he can get his health back so he can get that out there and start practicing.' The 49ers' top wide receivers who are currently healthy and available for Week 1 are Ricky Pearsall, a 2024 first-round pick, and, perhaps, Russell Gage, who hasn't played a regular-season snap since he suffered a torn patella tendon in August 2023. The 49ers hope Moore can strengthen the spot despite his modest resume. Moore's career highlight came during his rookie season when he caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of a 38-35 win over the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. This summer, Moore has no catches on three targets while playing 46 snaps in two preseason games. Moore had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown Friday in a loss at Seattle. In his career, Moore has 14 returns for 86 yards, with all his runbacks coming as a rookie.

49ers trade for Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore, AP source says

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. A person familiar with the trade said the teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027 in the deal that sends Moore to San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Moore passes a physical. Moore was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2022 but hasn't produced much in his first three seasons. He had 43 catches for 494 yards and one TD in 36 games. He didn't catch a single pass last season because of a a core muscle injury. Moore did catch a TD pass in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 38-35 win in the Super Bowl against Philadelphia following the 2022 season. Moore had an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a preseason game last Friday at Seattle. The 49ers have gone 227 consecutive regular-season games without a punt return touchdown for the second longest active drought in the NFL. The Niners were in dire need of healthy receivers. Brandon Aiyuk is working his way back from major knee surgery and isn't expected to be able to play until at least Week 6, while fellow starter Jauan Jennings has been out for most of training camp with a calf injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday on his radio show that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. Rookie Jordan Watkins is out with a high ankle sprain and second-year pro Jacob Cowing is nursing a hamstring injury. Cowing hurt his hamstring the first day of training camp and returned to practice last week. Cowing tweaked the injury on Tuesday and missed practice Wednesday. ___
