Law enforcement connects with Youngstown kids over fishing

Yahoo16-05-2025
NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – It was an outdoor fishing adventure Friday for some Youngstown School kids.
The event is called 'Cops and Bobbers' because the kids were casting their lines with law enforcement officials.
The fourth and fifth graders from MLK Elementary enjoyed a day at the New Middletown Farmers & Sportsmen Club.
It's a collaboration with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office and Youngstown Police Department, who hope to create a trusting bond with the kids moving forward.
'It is a good way to teach the kids that there is more to experience than just running around the streets when it comes summer and springtime, that there is more program out there for them. Obviously, hunting and fishing is something we all grew up with doing,' said Youngstown Police Officer Casey Kelly.
All the fishing gear used by the kids was donated by Walmart and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Brian Oehlbeck contributed to this report.

Man shot and killed after standoff at Mercer County hotel, police say

A man was shot and killed after a standoff at a hotel in Mercer County on Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police said. Police said they went to the Park Inn by Radisson off Route 18 in Shenango Township on Thursday afternoon to serve a warrant to 45-year-old Tyrell Askerneese of Farrell, CBS affiliate WKBN reported. Troopers said Askerneese was armed and refused to surrender peacefully. The Mercer County Crisis Intervention Response Team was called to help and took over the scene after troopers tried multiple tactics over several hours but couldn't get Askerneese to surrender, the TV station said. The standoff ended about three hours later when Askerneese was shot and killed, WKBN reported. A woman staying at the hotel told the TV station that she wasn't allowed to leave until the incident was over. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the shooting. No other information was immediately available. It was the second police shooting that troopers responded to on Thursday. Across the state in northeastern Pennsylvania, two troopers were shot and the suspect was killed after what Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris called an "ambush." Police said 61-year-old Carmine Faino shot and killed his neighbor, 57-year-old Lori Wasko, outside her home in Thompson Township, Susquehanna County, before police responded. Investigators said police shot and killed Faino, who was armed with a rifle and refused to comply. The two troopers shot, Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, were flown to hospitals and are in stable condition. Paris said he had met with both and they were in good spirits.

Library temporarily adjusts hours following security incident

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County announced Monday that it will temporarily adjust the hours at one of its branches following an internal review of security measures after an incident two weeks ago. As a follow-up to the security incident involving a person with a sword that occurred on July 25, the Michael Kusalaba Library will temporarily operate under adjusted hours to ensure 'enhanced staffing' during peak times. The updated schedule is as follows: Monday & Tuesday: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. This temporary change is intended to increase staff presence during high-traffic periods, according to a release from the library. At this time, the duration of the updated schedule has yet to be determined. 'PLYMC will evaluate the effectiveness of these revised hours and decide on their continuation later,' the library release states. The library says it will also conduct a comprehensive, system-wide security review across all locations. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a Mini Cooper driven by Rice was travelling south on Scoville North Road about 6:50 p.m. when it failed to round a curve, went off the right side of the road and rolled over. The vehicle hit two traffic signs and overturned in a ditch before coming to rest, according to the Patrol. Rice suffered minor injuries. A message was left with Rice. An attorney has not been listed in online court records. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday. Rice was first elected to the bench in 2012 and reelected twice. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
