Law enforcement connects with Youngstown kids over fishing

Yahoo16-05-2025

NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – It was an outdoor fishing adventure Friday for some Youngstown School kids.
The event is called 'Cops and Bobbers' because the kids were casting their lines with law enforcement officials.
The fourth and fifth graders from MLK Elementary enjoyed a day at the New Middletown Farmers & Sportsmen Club.
It's a collaboration with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office and Youngstown Police Department, who hope to create a trusting bond with the kids moving forward.
'It is a good way to teach the kids that there is more to experience than just running around the streets when it comes summer and springtime, that there is more program out there for them. Obviously, hunting and fishing is something we all grew up with doing,' said Youngstown Police Officer Casey Kelly.
All the fishing gear used by the kids was donated by Walmart and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Brian Oehlbeck contributed to this report.

When police arrived, a loss prevention employee for the store told officers that numerous people had ordered the new Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Bundle online for local delivery via Spark Driver, a delivery service introduced by Walmart. At 6:14 a.m., reports state the Spark Driver arrived at the store and collected 14 orders for local delivery. However, only one of those deliveries was fulfilled, according to reports. BMV warns Ohioans of scam texts

(WKBN) — Warnings have been going out about highway and turnpike toll text scams, and now another text scam involves the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). People have been reporting to the BMV text messages from someone claiming to be from the agency and saying that the recipient of the message has an outstanding traffic ticket. The text then instructs the recipient to pay the ticket immediately to avoid a license suspension. The BMV says this is a phishing attempt to get your personal information and has been reported by drivers nationwide. 'If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,' said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. 'Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.' Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency. Wildcats, drugs seized from PA home

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WKBN) — Two people were arrested in Clearfield County for drug trafficking and endangering the welfare of a child after thousands of dollars worth of drugs were seized, along with two wildcats. According to a release from Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, in collaboration with PSP and the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office, officers recovered two live African wildcats, which appeared to be unlawfully possessed. Jennifer Dixon, 27, and Nicholas Rumsey, 33, are each charged with possession with intent to distribute, endangering the welfare of a child, and other related drug charges. In the search of the property, officers seized: About three pounds of methamphetamine, valued at $19,200 About 159 grams of fentanyl, valued at $63,000 About nine grams of heroin, valued at $3,600 Other drug paraphernalia The Pennsylvania State Game Commission is investigating the conduct regarding the wildcats. Court records state Dixon was charged on Thursday, denied bail and is due back in court for a hearing on Wednesday. Rumsey has not yet been arraigned as of Monday morning, according to court records. 'Our agents never know what they're going to find when they prepare for a search at a residence, and this case was no exception,' Attorney General Dave Sunday said in a news release. 'The agents' seizure of methamphetamine, fentanyl and heroin ensures those drugs will not harm surrounding communities. The recovery and rescue of these wildcats provides the animals with opportunities to live safer, healthier lives – not caged in the basement of this home. I am grateful to Pennsylvania State Police and all the agencies involved in this operation for this remarkable seizure.' An investigation is ongoing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
