Law enforcement connects with Youngstown kids over fishing
NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – It was an outdoor fishing adventure Friday for some Youngstown School kids. The event is called 'Cops and Bobbers' because the kids were casting their lines with law enforcement officials. The fourth and fifth graders from MLK Elementary enjoyed a day at the New Middletown Farmers & Sportsmen Club. It's a collaboration with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office and Youngstown Police Department, who hope to create a trusting bond with the kids moving forward. 'It is a good way to teach the kids that there is more to experience than just running around the streets when it comes summer and springtime, that there is more program out there for them. Obviously, hunting and fishing is something we all grew up with doing,' said Youngstown Police Officer Casey Kelly. All the fishing gear used by the kids was donated by Walmart and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Brian Oehlbeck contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Hubbard students ditch the bus Wednesday
HUBBARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Students at Hubbard Schools were excited to celebrate National Bike and Roll to School Day. Almost 100 kids ditched the bus on Wednesday, instead joining up with friends to walk or ride to class. They met up with staff and volunteers at the Roosevelt Student Wellness Center and then set out for the 1-mile trek. Organizers hope the event teaches them that fitness can be fun. 'We're trying to increase the awareness of the walkability of our town and involve kids with health and fitness activities before and after school since they only have gym class about one a week, and we need gym class more than once a week, especially elementary kids,' said Karen Astuder, a health and fitness professional. When the students arrived at school, they were treated to activity stations, a snack and a free t-shirt — all thanks to the Hubbard Youth Coalition. The group hopes to make this an annual event. Trumbull County high schoolers awarded scholarships at annual breakfast
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – On Friday morning, students from Trumbull County's 20 public high schools were rewarded for their years of hard work at the annual Honors and Scholarship Breakfast. It was held at Leo's Banquet Center in Warren. Their academic achievements earned them money to put toward college and, for some, the military. 'The recognition today is for their accomplishments throughout their 12 or 13 years of schooling thus far, and how they were able to do what they did academically as well as athletically,' said Michael Hanshaw, superintendent of the Trumbull County Educational Service Center. The banquet is sponsored every year by the TCESC and the Trumbull County Superintendents' Association. Brian Oehlbeck contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Local students get sneak peek at new Oh Wow! exhibit
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Oh Wow! in downtown Youngstown is getting ready to open its new floor. On Tuesday, those at the museum tested out a new exhibit on some local students. A group from the Trumbull Career & Technical Center tried out the new 'America Makes 3D Printing Lab.' The students got to use 10 entry-level printers and then give feedback on their experience. The new exhibit opens to the public on April 16 and is just one of three new spaces to make its debut. 'That's what's wonderful about this new floor. It's going to give us more capacity to meet some of those older age demographics and hopefully get them excited about future careers that exist right here in the Mahoning Valley,' said Oh Wow! Executive Director Katie Detoro. Oh Wow! is also holding an adults-only event this Friday called Nerdy Night Out. There will be live music, tabletop games, a cash bar and food. SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – Local businesses celebrated St. Patrick's Day on Monday. At Quaker Steak and Lube in Sharon, they kicked things off very early, at 6 a.m. Everyone was decked out in green, including the green eggs and ham. 'You can expect a party from sun-up 'til sun-down. So whether you're here for the music, you're here for beer or the most perfect reuben, you're here to meet with some of your friends, some of those traditions you haven't done since last year, we've got a little bit of everything for everyone,' said event coordinator Taylor Sherman. The party has been happening every March 17 for more than 50 years. Brian Oehlbeck contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
