
Counting the costs of tariffs
While New Zealand might not be stung as badly as many others, it is still being penalised by capricious and unjust tariffs.
This nation has virtually no tariffs (about 0.8%) on goods from the United States, while US-owned giants like Meta, Microsoft and Google extract billions of dollars through tax avoidance.
New Zealand, long a close friend internationally, has been forced to tread carefully around US President Donald Trump.
It recently welcomed an FBI office in Wellington and has held back on pledging recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Nonetheless, the baseline 10% tariff imposed by the US earlier this year rises to 15%. Why? New Zealand recorded a trade surplus with the United States last year.
If food prices had not been high, or if New Zealand had imported a few US aircraft, the balance might have been reversed — and the 10% might have stayed, as it has for Singapore and Australia.
However, the US might still have made dismantling Pharmac a condition of a better deal.
It is, of course, futile to appease bullies. There are effectively no real negotiations.
Mr Trump issues decrees, and only afterwards might there be limited room to move.
The might of China may have muscle, especially because of the US debt it holds. Puny New Zealand is simply too small.
If there were just a little fairness, New Zealand could also apply 15% to US imports.
Nobody, however, is seriously proposing that. New Zealand has staked its reputation and its interests as a trading nation on free trade. It also dares not provoke the Trump tactic of responding with another ratchet of the rack.
It says much about the state of play that wily Foreign Minister Winston Peters and others advocated keeping this country's head down.
Mr Trump has so many big fish to fry — discussions are continuing with China and the European Union on the trade front alone — this seemed the wisest course.
In a flurry of action, New Zealand's head trade official is now off the Washington, and Trade Minister Todd McLay will follow.
Unsurprisingly, there is scepticism that this will do much good. Previously, such efforts failed to reduce steel and aluminium tariffs, and tiny New Zealand will struggle to receive much air or ear time at the highest levels.
Politically, however, it makes the government look as though it is doing something.
Despite Labour's criticism of poor tactics, it is doubtful whether proactive and public lobbying in Washington would have made any difference.
The resulting 15% tariff matches that applied to US allies Japan and South Korea and is slightly lower than much of Southeast Asia.
However, it is higher than the rate for fellow beef exporters Argentina and Uruguay. The US is also New Zealand's largest wine export market.
Wine receipts are expected to suffer, and F&P Healthcare, one of New Zealand's largest companies with manufacturing in Auckland and Mexico, will be disadvantaged as it competes with a major US rival.
Exporters were reconciling themselves to 10%, and 15% might not sound excessive.
But it represents a 50% increase on the earlier amount and is far harder to absorb. The result will be lower returns for exporters and higher costs for consumers, while the US collects tariff revenue.
Trade Minister Todd McLay estimates the tariff cost to exporters at an additional $500 million.
Fortunately, this coincides with strong global food demand and prices. Unfortunately, it comes at a time when the New Zealand economy is struggling to recover from prolonged doldrums.
Although not catastrophic, it dents confidence and removes another brick as the government tries to rebuild economic growth and salvage its electoral prospects.
The US has overtaken Australia as New Zealand's second-largest export market, worth $9 billion last year, though still well behind China.
New Zealand will bear the costs of President Trump's disruptive trade policies, both directly through tariffs and indirectly through their dampening effect on US and global growth.

The Epstein scandal is following him everywhere – even when he went to Scotland to sign an EU trade deal last week, he was asked if he'd rushed to get the deal done to knock the Epstein story off the front pages. 'You gotta be kidding with that,' Trump replied. A few weeks earlier, he responded to another reporter by asking: 'are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy's been talked about for years … are people still talking about this guy, this creep?' The answer is yes: six years after his death in a New York jail, the world is still talking about him, and specifically, about Trump's connection to him. Today on The Detail we look at the chaotic, dramatic, ongoing saga of Donald Trump's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, and the fallout that Trump's waffling on the issue has had on some of his far-right allies. The clamour to release the Epstein files became a MAGA movement obsession, when supporters of Trump became convinced they were full of the names of powerful Democrats, including ex-Presidents. QAnon used the files to push ideas about a deep state cover-up of a network of global pedophiles, and one of the people giving a nod and a wink to those theories was the now head of the FBI, Kash Patel. He made his living from spreading rumours such as Epstein actually being murdered by the Clintons, and that there is a cabal of satanic pedophiles within the Democratic party. On the election trail, Trump repeatedly said he would declassify the files. He became US President on January 20, and within short order, the Epstein files were back in the news cycle. But now it looks like Trump himself is in the files, backed up by evidence in conservative newspapers including the Wall Street Journal. You don't have to look hard to find pictures of the two together. They allegedly had a falling out in the early 2000s and hadn't spoken for years before Epstein's arrest in 2019. Suddenly, officials have tried to go quiet about Epstein's client list, variously saying it doesn't exist, or that there's nothing to see in there. But a small army of FBI agents have been diverted from other duties to comb through thousands of pages of documents taken from Epstein's residences, looking for Trump's name, and Patel has now testified that Epstein did in fact die by suicide. There are signs of Trump's supporter base turning on him over the issue, and Trump isn't helping calm them down with his attitude towards it. Jay Kuo is a former attorney based in New York who writes a political and legal newsletter called The Status Kuo. He says the more conspiracy-minded of the MAGA base have a lot to chew on, thanks to the Trump team's handling of the issue. 'They keep either making sloppy statements, or inconsistent statements, or riling up their base and then yanking the rug back. So it's sort of a roller coaster ride for the MAGA base.' Kuo says Trump-appointed officials spent years saying that once they were in power they would expose all these people and bring them down. 'That's why it's really interesting that now they find themselves in the position they have to disown a lot of that. It puts them in a very tough spot vis-a-vis their original audiences.' Trump's story, he says, keeps changing. 'What's interesting is the idea that the MAGA people have never put two and two together that Trump's name appears in the Epstein files, for example on the flight logs, I believe it's eight times.' Kuo says many just don't believe it's true, even though it's very clear that he is in there. But he says this has been the longest-lasting scandal involving the President and it's not going away. 'In this case though, he's lying to his base. The base that trusted him. He was supposed to bring the storm – that's the QAnon thing – he was going to come in, sweep out government and drain the swamp, and then arrest all these Democrat satanic pedophiles. 'It's absurd on its face but a good percentage of the American public actually is QAnon-believing or QAnon-adjacent. Sadly it's around 20 percent. 'The danger [Trump] faces is that he runs the risk of having this very, very emotionally charged, sort of imbalanced group of folks coming after him now for having failed them, made false promises to them. Letters to the Editor: tariffs, water and racists
Today's Letters to the Editor from readers cover topics including how to skin the US tariffs cat, North East Valley's water worries, and is New Zealand "as racist as f..."? More than one way to skin the US tariffs cat The issues surrounding Mr Trump's imposition of duties on all and sundry in the wider world makes fascinating news, as is his support of American business' right to do anything they like. For example the minimum taxes organisations such as Google, Facebook et al pay from revenue generated in countries such as ours. And of course a country as small as New Zealand is the proverbial weakling v the sumo bully. Currently this tax is around $8 million against total revenue of around $3 billion. Good luck to anyone thinking that goodness of heart and all that will make the biggies get honest. But there is more than one way of skinning cats. Why not just make all advertising by New Zealand business on those platforms non claimable as a business expense? It might, as a spin-off, direct more advertising revenue into New Zealand advertising channels, all of whom appear to be struggling. As an aside, I read this morning that several large beef retailers will not stock US beef. As I said, more than one way to skin cats. Pipes or seesaws I refer to Gillian Macleod's letter (1.8.25): I think she has missed the point of MP Sam Uffindell's comments. I am sure Sam is not wanting to be the "fun police". I certainly enjoy taking my grandchildren to playgrounds around Dunedin. I have had fun on the George St seesaw. However all of us who enjoy the recreational amenities should also give a thought to Lynne Newall in Surrey St. It is totally unacceptable that we have a sewerage system that has repeatedly failed. I am sure Lynne would choose to have her toilet working rather than a seesaw. I certainly would prioritise the former. Dunedin and many other communities have to decide on priority spending. Those of us who benefit from functioning Three Waters should advocate for those who don't and forgo our recreational activities in favour of the health and safety of others. Interestingly the DCC is paying $600,000 a week in interest payments. This is actually the first priority of our spending. Water woes Thank you for the article on North East Valley water worries and congratulations to Mary Williams for yet another thoughtful, well-researched story about an urgent issue. I think there were at least five decent stories in just that one article — the DCC's lackadaisical approach to logging sewage outflows being the most salient. I've lived in NEV since the 1990s. I walked through Chingford Park during the 2015 floods. I think one tree falling there would have been enough, such was the power of the water, to create a dam within minutes. This is urgent, local news. Being forewarned and forearmed against a disastrous flood must be worth millions. Remember Ally It was good to see the sports article in today's ODT (5.8.25) acknowledging Niamh Fisher-Black's fifth placing overall in the Tour de France Femmes along with Ella Wyllie 12th placing overall. Missing from the story was that Ally Wollaston, another Kiwi cyclist, was a member of the best team overall (FDJ-Suez). It was great to see her on the top step of the podium with her team at the finish of the world's greatest multi-day road cycling race. An unseemly stir among the keyboard warriors In your words, "The appointment of Nikhil Ravishankar as Air New Zealand's incoming chief executive has caused a stir, after major news outlets were forced to disable comments on their social media platforms due to receiving a barrage of racist remarks." In an interview Taika Waititi once described New Zealand as "as racist as f... ." Accordingly people were up in arms. How dare he say that, they asked, mostly on talkback radio. This sort of situation proves his point. As an indirect shareholder in Air New Zealand I couldn't care less if an eleven-eyed, multi-tentacled green alien from Planet Byrzzgh4 got the job, as long as they were competently able to lead the company forward. I wouldn't mind betting that all these secret assailants hammering away on their keyboards would be among the first to say "I'm not a racist, but . . .". Turning off The 2017 All Blacks series against the Lions was drawn as a result of an incorrect refereeing decision, the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final was decided by the television match official, the Lions' series win over Australia is shrouded in controversy .
