Second set: Raducanu 6-4, 0-1 Sakkari*
Sakkari gets the second set started with a good hold to 30.

First set all about fighting spirit
Raducanu played brilliant tennis in her first two rounds in Washington. That first set was all about her fighting spirit. Not sure we'd have seen that ability to withstand a physical barrage in tough conditions this time last year.
6:12PM
Raducanu wins set one 6-4
Raducanu, serving for the first set, wins the opening point before Sakkari draws level at 15-15. A good serve to the body moves the scoreboard to 30-15. An ace brings up two set points! Sakkari saves one with a forehand winner down the line but is unabele to save the second.

Fatigue a factor for the server
Fatigue a huge factor for the player serving. It's going to feel like a gruelling journey ahead for whoever loses the first set, as the debilitating heat is obviously a big influence on this match.
6:06PM
Raducanu 5-4 Sakkari*
Sakkari goes wide with a backhand then double-faults to give Raducanu an early 0-30 advantage. The Briton then nets a forehand to go 15-30. Good baseline play sees Sakkari finish the point with a well-timed inside-out forehand winner down the line. A massive backhand winner return brings up break point for Raducanu and the Briton takes it!
Raducanu will serve for this opening set after the sitdown.
6:01PM
Raducanu* 4-4 Sakkari
Sakkari races to a 0-30 lead thanks to some aggressive baseline play. Raducanu gets on the board following a wild Sakkari forehand. The Greek then nets a drive volley on the forehand wing which brings the game to 30-30 before a lovely backhand return winner gets Sakkari to 30-40. Raducanu saves break point then throws in a double fault to hand Sakkari a second break point.
And Sakkari breaks as Raducanu double-faults again!
5:54PM
Raducanu 4-3 Sakkari*
Sakkari gets things started with an ace before Raducanu draws an error from the Greek on the backhand wing. Sakkari then goes wide with a forehand to give Raducanu a look in before a good first serve moves the score to 30-30. Raducanu then toys with Sakkari from the baseline to bring up break point but the world No 90 quickly snuffs it out with an ace.
A nice exchange from the back of the court ends with a lovely Sakkari volley but the Greek is unable to close out the game as she goes wide with a drop-volley effort. Advantage Raducanu as Sakkari goes long with a forehand.
And Raducanu breaks again!
5:46PM
Raducanu* 3-3 Sakkari
After exchanging the first couple of points, Raducanu goes long with a forehand to fall 15-30 behind. A good serve to the body sees the Briton draw level at 30-30 and another brings up game point. And the Briton seals it with another fine serve out wide.

MLB Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg dies at 65 after battle with cancer

MLB Hall of Famer and former Chicago Cubs star Ryne Sandberg has died aged 65 after a battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by the MLB who, in a statement, wrote: 'We are deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. 'The beloved Cubs second baseman was a five-tool model of consistency in the 1980s and early '90s, making 10 consecutive All-Star teams and winning 9 straight Gold Glove awards. 'On June 23, 1984, a national TV audience watched Sandberg hit a pair of game-tying home runs in the 9th and 10th innings off Cardinals closer and future Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter. 'Part of a magical Cubs Postseason run, the game is forever remembered in Chicago as 'The Sandberg Game.' He went on to win the 1984 NL MVP Award. 'Over 16 seasons, Sandberg slugged 282 home runs, 277 of which were as a second baseman, then a Major League record. He hit 25+ homers five times and stole 30+ bases five times. 'Sandberg made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 1981 and later managed them for parts of three seasons. 'On June 23, 2024, the 40th anniversary of his iconic moment, the Cubs unveiled a statue of Sandberg outside Wrigley Field. Sandberg bravely battled cancer the last two years. He was 65'.

Tigers' Troy Melton dominates Diamondbacks, earns first career win

July 29 - Troy Melton tossed seven shutout innings to collect his first career victory as the host Detroit Tigers downed the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-1, on Monday night. Melton (1-1) scattered five singles and didn't issue a walk while striking out five in his second career start after being promoted from Triple-A Toledo. Dillon Dingler led the offense for the Tigers with three hits, including a solo homer, and two runs scored. Andy Ibanez, recalled from Toledo earlier in the day, supplied a double and a solo homer and also scored twice. Matt Vierling added an RBI double as the Tigers won their second straight following a six-game losing streak. Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) gave up five runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings. Alek Thomas hit a solo homer for Arizona, which has lost six of its last seven contests. Arizona third baseman Eugenio Suarez, one of the prominent names on the trade market, was removed after being hit in the hand by a Will Vest pitch in the ninth. Suarez is among the top five in the league in homers with 36. The Tigers scored a gift run in the first. Gleyber Torres drew a one-out walk and Jahmai Jones hit into a fielder's choice. Spencer Torkelson then hit a short fly ball. A trio of Diamondbacks converged but left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. couldn't hang onto it. Jones came around to score on the play. Ibanez led off the second inning with a double and moved to third on a Dillon single. One out later, Javier Baez had a bloop single to center as Ibanez scored. Detroit extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Ibanez led off and ambushed a Rodriguez fastball over the left field wall. Dingler followed with a single and moved up on a grounder. With two out, Vierling doubled to center to bring home Dingler. Rodriguez recorded four straight strikeouts before Dingler pulled a hanging Rodriguez slider to make it 5-0. The Diamondbacks got on the board when Thomas blasted a Tommy Kahnle changeup over the right-center field wall with one out in the eighth. --Field Level Media

Royals All-Star Kris Bubic (rotator cuff strain) done for season

July 29 - The Kansas City Royals announced left-hander Kris Bubic will miss the remainder of the season with a left rotator cuff strain. Bubic, an All-Star this season, walked the first four batters he faced on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians on just 21 pitches. He left the game with two outs in the third after giving up four runs and three hits. Bubic told reporters after the game that he had been pitching through shoulder soreness for much of the season. The 27-year-old veteran owned an 8-7 record with a career-best 2.55 ERA in 116 1/3 innings. He posted a 1.43 ERA during his first 12 starts through June 1, but a 4.61 ERA over his final eight starts. The Royals have dealt with several injuries to their starting rotation this season as left-hander Cole Ragans, right-hander Alec Marsh and right-hander Michael Lorenzen are all currently on the IL. The Royals called up righty Jonathan Bowlan and 45-year-old Rich Hill from Triple-A Omaha to help fill out the pitching staff. The Royals are 52-54 and sit four games back of the final wild card spot in the American League. --Field Level Media
