Tigers' Troy Melton dominates Diamondbacks, earns first career win
Melton (1-1) scattered five singles and didn't issue a walk while striking out five in his second career start after being promoted from Triple-A Toledo.
Dillon Dingler led the offense for the Tigers with three hits, including a solo homer, and two runs scored. Andy Ibanez, recalled from Toledo earlier in the day, supplied a double and a solo homer and also scored twice. Matt Vierling added an RBI double as the Tigers won their second straight following a six-game losing streak.
Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) gave up five runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings. Alek Thomas hit a solo homer for Arizona, which has lost six of its last seven contests.
Arizona third baseman Eugenio Suarez, one of the prominent names on the trade market, was removed after being hit in the hand by a Will Vest pitch in the ninth. Suarez is among the top five in the league in homers with 36.
The Tigers scored a gift run in the first. Gleyber Torres drew a one-out walk and Jahmai Jones hit into a fielder's choice. Spencer Torkelson then hit a short fly ball. A trio of Diamondbacks converged but left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. couldn't hang onto it. Jones came around to score on the play.
Ibanez led off the second inning with a double and moved to third on a Dillon single. One out later, Javier Baez had a bloop single to center as Ibanez scored.
Detroit extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Ibanez led off and ambushed a Rodriguez fastball over the left field wall. Dingler followed with a single and moved up on a grounder. With two out, Vierling doubled to center to bring home Dingler.
Rodriguez recorded four straight strikeouts before Dingler pulled a hanging Rodriguez slider to make it 5-0.
The Diamondbacks got on the board when Thomas blasted a Tommy Kahnle changeup over the right-center field wall with one out in the eighth.

August 5 - The Houston Astros rediscovered their offense on Monday against the host Miami Marlins, and the visitors will attempt to keep it going in the second game of a three-game series on Tuesday. After getting swept in a three-game weekend set by the Boston Red Sox and managing a total of five runs, Houston responded with 11 hits in an 8-2 victory at Miami. "They are an aggressive offense," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. "They strung some hits together." Houston's Jeremy Pena, Yanier Diaz and Cam Smith each collected two hits on Monday, and they combined for four RBIs. The strong offensive performance led the Astros to just their third win in 11 games. The result halted Miami's five-game winning streak, the club's second-best run of the year. The Marlins have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past two months, going 30-15 since June 13. On Tuesday, the Marlins will start right-hander Cal Quantrill (4-8, 4.79 ERA). The Astros had not announced a starter as of late Monday night. Quantrill, who is 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA in six career appearances (four starts) against Houston, has allowed just one run over his past three starts, covering 16 innings. He registered 10 strikeouts and just two walks in that span. The Marlins -- who lost 100 games last year -- entered the series with a .500 record, making them one of baseball's best comeback stories this year. Among their surprising contributors is utility man Javier Sanoja, who is 4-for-7 with three homers in his past two games. The 5-foot-7, 150-pound Venezuela native had hit just one homer in 91 major league games before going deep twice on Friday against the New York Yankees. He added a solo shot on Monday. "Power surge from Javier Sanoja!" McCullough said with a smile. "He is a really good baseball player. He is always prepared." Astros left fielder Jesus Sanchez was prepared to face his former teammates on Monday, four days after Miami traded him to Houston in exchange for pitcher Ryan Gusto, infielder Chase Jaworsky and outfielder Esmil Valencia. On Monday, Sanchez hit an RBI double off ex-teammate and Dominican countryman Sandy Alcantara. Sanchez enjoyed the moment, laughing in Alcantara's direction. "He's a great hitter and a great teammate," Alcantara said. "He was laughing, but I don't like laughing. He knows that. "It was great to see him on the field, but it was sad to see him on the other team." The RBI was Sanchez's first with his new team. He is 4-for-15 (.267) in four games with the Astros. Paredes, who has posted 19 homers, 50 RBIs and an .829 OPS in 94 games this season, reportedly declined to have season-ending hamstring surgery. Tigers' Chris Paddack set to face former team, Twins
August 5 - Chris Paddack started 21 games for Minnesota this season. The 29-year-old right-hander will now look to shut down the Twins when the Detroit Tigers host his former team on Tuesday night. Paddack (4-9, 4.77 ERA) dealt to Detroit early last week at the beginning of the Twins' fire sale before the trade deadline. Paddack won his Tigers debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. "One of the first things I did when I got traded over here was to look at the schedule," Paddack said, according to the Detroit News. "I started doing the math and saw I get to face my former teammates -- the bad guys, which is what I'm calling them -- in my second start as a Tiger. "Definitely going to be a lot of mixed emotions out there. ... I've faced former teammates before in my career, but not a week after leaving a clubhouse." Paddack, who began his career with the San Diego Padres, struggled for much of the season but posted a quality outing in his Minnesota finale. He held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run in six innings on July 23, then duplicated that feat against the Diamondbacks. He suddenly finds himself on the runaway leader in the American League Central, and it's given him a mental boost. "I'm very blessed to be given the opportunity to be a Tiger," he said ahead of his first career start vs. Minnesota. "We've got a young, hungry group that did some really special things last year and they came short on their goal. We're not going to come up short this year." The Tigers were motivated to acquire a starting pitcher after Reese Olson sustained a shoulder injury that will keep him out for the rest of the regular season. Paddack said of Minnesota's decision to become aggressive sellers, "Not to get too in-depth with it, that's more on the business side, but they are in the process of selling the team, so it was just a tough spot as a player. We started out the season kind of up and down, and unfortunately it just didn't come together." Right-hander Zebby Matthews (2-3, 5.67) will make his eighth start of the year for the Twins. He tossed six scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals on July 25, but his latest outing didn't go well. Matthews allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. "I just left some pitches up and I thought they put some good swings on them. They deserve credit for how they swung the bats," Matthews said. "I just didn't quite execute pitches. Can't make it easy when they're swinging the bats that way." He will be facing the Tigers for the first time. The first game of the series on Monday featured three homers from each side. Kerry Carpenter had the decisive blow, a two-run shot in the sixth, helping the Tigers capture the series opener 6-3. Twins rookie infielder Luke Keaschall, who has been sidelined since late April with a broken right forearm, is expected to rejoin the club on Tuesday.
