Govt Invites Japanese textile firms to Invest in PM-MITRA parks

Coimbatore: India exported textiles and apparel worth $354 million to Japan in 2024, while Japan's total imports in the sector stood at $30.87 billion, the Centre informed Parliament on Tuesday. Responding to a question raised by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran in Lok Sabha, minister of state for textiles Pabitra Margherita said efforts were under way to boost India's share in Japan's textile market through trade facilitation measures and strategic investments. To improve market access, India and Japan signed the comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in 2011, aimed at reducing tariffs and simplifying procedures for exporters. Margherita said during a recent high-level visit to Japan, Indian officials held discussions with several leading Japanese firms in the textile value chain — from apparel and machinery to technical textiles and fabric processing. These companies have been invited to invest in the govt's flagship PM-MITRA Parks, designed to offer world-class textile infrastructure. The minister cited the production linked incentive scheme as a key incentive to scale up manufacturing in MMF fabrics, MMF apparel, and technical textiles.
