UFC star axed by Dana White just days after controversial defeat
The UFC fighter has been sacked after losing her third fight in a row at UFC 316 - headlined by Merab Dvalishvili's bantamweight rematch with Sean O'Malley
UFC president Dana White is known for his ruthless approach to cutting fighters, and following UFC 316, one fighter has been shown the door.
The promotion was back in New Jersey last weekend for a blockbuster pay-per-view event, with the main event being a bantamweight clash between Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O'Malley. The Georgian had won their first bout last September, but 'Suga' was keen to level the series.
However, Dvalishvili put an end to the rivalry by submitting the challenger in the third round, successfully defending his 135lb title. In the co-main event, Kayla Harrison became the new women's bantamweight champion after she submitted Julianna Pena.
Also on the main card, Kevin Holland submitted Vicente Luque in the second round, while Patchy Mix had a difficult promotional debut, losing to rising bantamweight star Mario Bautista. Just days after the fight card, one of Saturday night's top fighters has been let go.
According to Brazilian outlet Ag Fight, Ariane da Silva has been released from the UFC after the promotion decided not to renew her current contract. Da Silva lost to Wang Cong in a unanimous decision in their catchweight clash lower down the pay-per-view card. The fight was supposed to be at flyweight, but Da Silva shockingly missed weight by six pounds.
Renato da Silva, husband of MMA fighter Ariane, has disclosed to MMA Fighting that a botched treatment plan for a benign pituitary tumour led to serious complications during her weight cut. The Brazilian's coach explained that the tumour was found after a blood test indicated abnormal prolactin and cortisol levels during fight camp. Despite bringing in a new nutritionist for UFC 316, the strategy failed.
"We wanted to get the cortisol levels down so it wouldn't affect her health," Renato commented. "By controlling the cortisol levels, we wanted to cause as little stress as possible to her body. And the nutritionist opted for a strategy that would have her hold as much as weight as possible until the end, and it was too much for the final days. He doesn't know her as much as I do, and he thought she would be able to do that.
"There was a moment this morning she wasn't feeling good. I know her body. There was still something left there to cut, but at the same time, her reactions weren't normal. She wasn't walking right, she was blinking too slow, she had double vision, and couldn't focus, her voice sounded weak. She was giving us dangerous signs as she dropped weight."
Da Silva first stepped into the promotional cage in 2019. She suffered defeats in her first two bouts against Joanne Calderwood and Molly McCann, before bouncing back with two consecutive victories. The 31-year-old then had a mixed record of 1-2 in her next three fights before deciding to move up in weight. After a loss to Priscila Cachoeira on her 135lb debut, Da Silva returned to the flyweight division and secured three straight wins. However, she leaves the UFC on the back of three successive losses.

Trent Alexander-Arnold explains Real Madrid call amid Andy Robertson uncertainty
It will be all change for Premier League champions Liverpool next season, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher already agreeing moves away from Anfield Liverpool have been among the busier Premier League clubs in the early part of the summer transfer window. Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid, with Jeremie Frimpong arriving in his stead, and that's just the start. Giorgi Mamardashvili's arrival from Valencia was already confirmed, and the Georgian's move to Anfield means Caoimhin Kelleher's time on Merseyside has come to an end. The Irishman has moved to Brentford, who themselves have lost Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen. Arne Slot led Liverpool to Premier League glory in his first season in charge, but is under no illusions about how tough it will be to defend the title. For starters, Manchester City have been very active in the early part of the window with the likes of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki coming on board. Alexander-Arnold's move to Spain may well be Liverpool's highest-profile departure this summer. The defender spoke at an official unveiling on Thursday, shedding more light on the switch. We've got more on Alexander-Arnold's move, as well as the latest on the future of his fellow full-back Andy Robertson. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from around Anfield. Alexander-Arnold opens up on move Trent Alexander-Arnold has denied Jude Bellingham was the driving force behind his move to Real Madrid. Rather, he suggests manager and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso convinced him to trade Anfield for the Bernabeu. 'I've spoken to Xabi few times," the right-back said. "I told him he was an idol of mine growing up, so to work with him is a dream come true. I'm very excited to be here. Whether you support the club or not, you have to respect the history.' Discussing Bellingham's role, he added: "We spoke but it wasn't what people thought. A lot of people think he played a huge part in me coming here but, to be honest, the club speaks for itself. It was a huge opportunity for me and it felt like the right time as well.' Robertson makes future admission Andy Robertson has been in conversation with Liverpool over a contract extension but is unsure what lies ahead. The Scotland international has been the Reds' first-choice left-back for a number of years, but that could change with the anticipated arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. 'We have discussed [my future], of course we have," Robertson told Sky Sports News at his AR26 Charity day. "We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure. 'All I know is I fly off on holiday and it's well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That's all my focus is. I can't look too far ahead, I never have done that so I'm not going to start doing that now. I know the position I'm in, I know I've only got a year left." Alexander-Arnold's squad number choice Trent Alexander-Arnold will wear the number 12 in his first season as a Real Madrid player. He will also wear just his first name on his back, after having his surname adorn the shirt while at Liverpool. La Liga's rules mean first-team players are only allowed to wear a number between 1 and 25. The most famous recent wearer of the number 12 shirt at the Bernabeu is Marcelo, the Brazilian full-back who played more than 500 times across a decade and a half with the club. "I'm looking forward to showing my game to the Real Madrid fans; I know it's a huge responsibility," Alexander-Arnold said - in Spanish - during his unveiling. "I want to play with the best in the world, give it my all, and win every title possible. Hala Madrid!"

Matheus Cunha breaks silence after signing as Mason Greenwood reunion confirmed
Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers but there's plenty more work left to do for Ruben Amorim over the summer Manchester United's busy summer has been continuing, with Matheus Cunha's arrival from Wolves now official. The Brazilian has joined in a £62.5million move, and is officially the first new arrival at Old Trafford during Ruben Amorim's first summer window. Amorim's side have already lost several senior stars this summer, with the club announcing their released and retained lists. Victor Lindelof, Cristian Eriksen and Jonny Evans will all leave when their contracts expire, though discussions remain over an extension for Tom Heaton. Cunha is unlikely to be the last new arrival, though. Despite failing to qualify for the Champions League - or indeed any UEFA competition - Amorim's team have money to spend. We're also anticipating a number of exits as United prepare to raise funds for further new faces. Bruno Fernandes might be staying put, but it's likely to be a different story when it comes to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony. We've got the latest from Cunha himself, as well as some updates on other deals. Here are Mirror Football 's Friday morning lines from around Old Trafford. Cunha breaks silence Matheus Cunha has opened up on his love for Manchester United after joining the club. The Brazilian's first Premier League move came when he left Atletico Madrid for Wolves, but he now has the chance to pull on United's famous red shirt. 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player," Cunha said. "Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. "I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.' Dortmund's Sancho stance Borussia Dortmund chief Sebastian Kehl has explained the club are not prioritising a third move for Jadon Sancho, England international Sancho left the German club for United in 2021 and returned on loan to help them reach the Champions League final in 2024. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Kehl said as Dortmund prepare to begin their Club World Cup campaign. The deadline for registering players in time for the competition's group stage has already passed, and Sancho is still at Old Trafford. 'But it's not an issue for us right now," Kehl continued. "We have other priorities at the moment and that's why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.' Greenwood handed United reunion Mason Greenwood will be United with Angel Gomes at Marseille next season. The pair were team-mates at Old Trafford, both making their senior debuts as teenagers before moving to France. While Marseille is Greenwood's first club in Ligue 1, Gomes first spent time with their rivals Lille. He spent five seasons with Les Dogues, playing more than 100 league games, but will move to Stade Velodrome after reaching an agreement in principle. Gomes made his senior England debut while at Lille, earning a call-up under interim boss Lee Carsley in 2024. Greenwood has also been capped by England, but has since switched his international allegiances to Jamaica.
