A BRAZILIAN footballer has surpassed Peter Shilton's longstanding record for most competitive appearances at professional level.
Last Saturday, Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio walked out onto the pitch for the 1,390th time – a 2-1 home win over Fortaleza in Brazil's Serie A – which equalled former England stopper Shilton's tally set 28 years ago.

And then on Tuesday evening at the Maracana stadium, he broke new ground in men's football as he appeared in goal against Colombian outfit América de Cali – for match number 1,391 of his long career.
This was in the second leg of the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, which is the Europa League equivalent of South American club football.
Fabio finished the match on the winning side as they won 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.
To mark the occasion, he celebrated with his family on the pitch as he was presented with a couple of mementoes.

In a professional career spanning 28 years, the 44-year-old has played senior games for Uniao Bandeirante (30), Vasco da Gama (150), Cruzeiro (976) and Fluminense (235).
Fabio, who turns 45 next month, may have begun his senior career five years after the advent of the English Premier League.
But remarkably, despite his unrivalled longevity, he has never had the privilege of donning the famous yellow Brazilian shirt in a competitive fixture.
A member of Brazil's under-17s World Cup triumph in Egypt in 1997, he was an unused sub during the 2003 Fifa Confederations Cup campaign in France.

And he was on the bench the whole time as Carlos Alberto Parreira's Brazil lifted the 2004 Copa America in Peru.
When he was asked about possibly breaking Shilton's record, Fabio told Brazilian media: 'God gave me this gift.

'I have to thank everyone who has been part of my life – my father, mother, sisters, friends, my wife...I try to be a good person.
'The important thing is to help my teammates. I am grateful, but without God nothing would be possible.
'These are difficult games and we are facing very strong teams. We are always striving to achieve our goals, which are the titles.'
Provided he is fit, Fabio could extend the record much further into the distance, especially as the Brazilian domestic league does not stop until December 21.

Here is a look at how the goalkeeper reached the record number of appearances...
União Bandeirante, 1997-2000 Appearances: 30
Vasco da Gama, 2000-2004 Appearances: 150
Cruzeiro, 1999 (loan) and 2005–2021 Appearances: 976

Shilton, who played between 1966 and 1997, is acknowledged as the record holder for the most competitive men's professional games, though the total is disputed.
Guinness World Records and a number of statistics websites say the tally is 1390.
Yet Shilton, 75, who played a record 125 times for England, claimed on social media that it should be 1387.
The discrepancy comes from Guinness officials including 16 unofficial games that Shilton does not include – while he includes 13 games he played for England's Under-23s side that normally are not counted.

Rasmus Hojlund makes decision over transfer as Man Utd receive new approach

Rasmus Hojlund is pushing for a permanent transfer with Napoli holding talks to sign the Manchester United striker, according to reports in Italy. Antonio Conte's side have joined the race to sign Hojlund as Romelu Lukaku now faces several weeks on the sidelines due to a thigh injury. Sky Sport Italy reports that Napoli have made an approach to United over a deal for the Denmark international. The report adds that Hojlund's preference is to return to Serie A on a permanent basis rather than join a club on loan with an option to buy. AC Milan had held extensive talks to sign Hojlund from United this summer but the Serie A side are now on the verge of reaching an agreement to sign Victor Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, which includes an option to buy for €30 million (£25.9m). United's decision to sign Benjamin Sesko in a £73.7m deal from RB Leipzig could signal the end of Hojlund's time at Old Trafford. Hojlund, who was signed in a £72m deal from Atalanta two years ago, was left out of United's squad for their Premier League opener against Arsenal last Sunday. Speaking about his decision to omit Hojlund from his squad for the 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, Amorim said: 'It is a fight for places. Sky Sports is going full throttle this Premier League season, airing a record-breaking 215 live matches - that's nearly double the usual dose of drama, goals, and post-match meltdowns. From Friday night clashes to Super Sundays and even all ten final-day fixtures, Sky's new deal means fans won't miss a single nutmeg or last-minute screamer. Whether you're team Sky Q, Sky Glass, or prefer streaming via NOW, you're covered. And with pundits like Jamie Carragher probably already rehearsing their 'I told you so' lines, expect top-tier commentary alongside top-tier football. 'We'll see what is going to happen in the market. There are different characteristics. Rasmus has the same characteristics of Benjamin Sesko, so we need to choose.' Hojlund, meanwhile, has publicly maintained that he wants to remain at United in order to compete for his place alongside Sesko. More Trending 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22,' Hojlund said during United's pre-season campaign earlier this month. 'Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22. But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. I'm starting to develop and become even better in the basics. 'Now it's just about for me to sharpen myself and I've done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that. 'Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Neymar confronted by angry Santos fans and 'threatened with violence' at training ground after worst defeat of his career left him in tears

Santos fans still furious at their side's humiliating 6-0 defeat by Vasco da Gama on Sunday have given Neymar and Co a public dressing down. In an extraordinary scene, Neymar - who was in tears after suffering the heaviest loss of his career - faced the music. The club's ultras let the team know exactly how they felt, with footage of the tongue-lashing posted online. Neymar was right at the front and the players behind him listened solemnly to their irate supporters outside the training ground. The assembled squad were told: 'What's happening on the pitch is not enough.' ESPN Brazil also report that the players were threatened with violence at the CT Rei Pele facility, adding that Neymar told the ultras they are 'trying to change things'. Membro da torcida organizada fala com os jogadores e demais membros da equipe… 'isso que tá acontecendo é pouco' #deolhonopeixe — De Olho No Peixe (@deolhonopeixe) August 19, 2025 And few could argue with that sentiment after Sunday's hammering. Neymar - who rejoined his boyhood club after a nightmare spell in Saudi - was overcome with emotion at full-time and was consoled on the pitch by a member of the club's coaching staff. As he then headed towards the tunnel, the 33-year-old could be seen in tears before wiping them away with his shirt. 'I'm ashamed,' Neymar said. 'I'm totally disappointed with our performance. 'The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence... but if they want to curse and insult, they're in their right.' 'It's a feeling of extreme shame. I've never experienced this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened. 'The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Anyway, it was total s***, that's the reality.' In the immediate aftermath of the dire defeat, Santos then sacked their head coach Cleber Xavier as they attempt to rescue their season. Neymar has had a mixed impact back in his homeland, scoring six goals and adding three assists in 19 games, but Santos are 15th in the Brazilian top flight and just two points clear of the relegation zone. The Brazilian was at least comforted by a message of support from his son, Davi Lucca, who wrote on social media: 'Good evening, Dad. I know today has been a difficult day for you and for us, but I wanted you to know that in these difficult moments, and when no one is by your side, know that I will always be there for you. 'You are more than a great father, you are an idol, you are my inspiration, and even when you cry, I want you to know that I love you very much. 'Always keep that in mind. Now, I want you to hold your head high and reach out to them as you always have and will. You are incredible. I love you with all my heart.' Neymar replied: 'I love you, my little one. Dad will get back on his feet.' Speaking back in January on his romantic return to Santos, Neymar had expressed his delight at the move. '(I've been) wishing for this moment to come true for a long time,' he said. 'We're helping each other, Santos are helping me, they've opened doors for me to rediscover soccer, to rediscover joy,' he said. That joy has turned to despair in recent weeks and Neymar will be aiming to spearhead a sharp turnaround in fortunes for the Brazilian giants.

Leon Bailey joins Roma on season-long loan deal from Aston Villa

The 28-year-old will join up with the Serie A side who finished fifth in the league last season. Bailey has made 144 appearance for Villa since he signed for the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. Aston Villa can confirm Leon Bailey has joined AS Roma on loan. — Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) August 20, 2025 The Jamaica international was a regular starter for Unai Emery's side over his first couple of seasons with the club but saw game time limited in the latter half of last season after suffering an injury. Bailey helped Villa to the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season where he scored and assisted in the last-16 tie against Club Brugge. Bailey becomes the second player from the Premier League to sign for Roma after Brighton striker Evan Ferguson made the move earlier in the window.
